Ted Maher -- former Special Forces; Neonatal Intensive Care nurse
American Green Beret veteran and accomplished neonatal nurse Ted Maher has now been held 537 days without trial in Monaco's prison on trumped-up and false charges -- charges of causing the deaths of billionaire banker Edmond Safra and Ted's fellow nurse, Vivian Torrente on December 3, 1999. In truth, Ted fought valiantly against two armed, masked intruders to defend Edmond and Vivian and save their lives. During the struggle, Ted suffered severe knife wounds that required one hundred staples to close.
Billionaire banker Edmond Safra was cooperating with the FBI, who was investigating the IMF/Russian loans. Needing a convenient scapegoat for the murder of Safra, Monaco police subjected Ted to three days of grueling torture designed to extort a false confession from him. (see description in "BASIC TIMELINE" in Thread 1 - http://206.112.97.70/forum/a3ad8b097272d.htm ).
Monaco continues to hold Ted incommunicado, preventing him from sending or receiving mail. In fact, they restrict his communication with his family to one telephone call a week. This call is only allowed to last a few minutes and is always monitored closely to prevent any discussion of the case. Ted is forced by his jailers to take a psychotropic medication and is regularly "interrogated" by the Monaco judge -- Patricia Richet. Reports have been received that Judge Richet is a violent person who has displayed unstable behavior in the past. She allegedly has a history of assaulting a fellow judge, putting him in the hospital for a week. She also tears up letters from Ted's children in front of Ted rather than let him read them.
Hundreds of family, friends, work associates, parents of patients, and Army veterans who served with Ted have vouched for him as being a loyal husband, loving father, and an exemplary professional of great skill and compassion. Ted has also been defended by then-chairman of the House International Relations Committee Ben Gilman and Ted's congresswoman Sue Kelly, who have written Prince Rainier III of Monaco on Ted's behalf. Monaco has no evidence of any crime by Ted; they have no witnesses and no credible case against him. Even worse, Monaco has planted false evidence and suppressed vast amounts of exculpatory evidence -- even passing a special Monaco law that enables them to hold Ted four years without trial.
The Geneva prosecutor has said that Safra was killed for his cooperation with the FBI regarding the laundering through Safra's Republic National Bank of $4.8 billion in IMF loans to Russia.
Regardless of the reason "why," it is obvious that Ted Maher is a scapegoat for a murder by others. We are working to obtain his release and to correct the grave injustice being done to an American Green beret veteran and medical professional.
Ted Maher -- a giver of life, not a taker -- needs our help.

As he indicated, the fire report states the sudden conflagration occured when Ted was in the hospital;
The report mentions three times that the "sudden conflagration" occured at 6 a.m.
Ted was rushed to Princess Grace Memorial Hospital an hour earlier, to receive one hundred staples and numerous transfusions.
The fire report references multiple points of ignition in the penthouse on the sixth floor never ascribed to Ted.
Ted has never been permitted to speak of the night in question after the extorted false confession.
The mere mention of it during his one phone call a week would result in immediate disconnection.
His mail has been blocked, and his use of a laptop has been denied--though all other prisoners have that privilege.
He has not been allowed private meetings with visitors, and two priests have been expelled for becoming sympathetic to his case.
When DatelineNBC's Sara James was in Monaco taping "Who Killed the Billionaire?" (air date November 21, 2000; transcript archived at Mike's site for Ted http://www.TedMaher.com, she tried--
She ran after a black sedan carrying Ted as it sped into a garage and the door came down behind it shouting, "Ted?!"--such freedom of the press in Monaco.
Vivian's autopsy noted the total infusion of blood in her thyroid, which in conjunction with the combat bruising indicates she was strangled.
Edmond's blood spattered her panties, bra and barette/nursing cap, and his DNA was under her fingernails.
Edmond had unidentified male DNA under his fingernails.
Monaco prosecutor Serdet has never been one to let facts get in the way of a hypothesis, witness his blithe dismissal of the negative tox screen on Ted by Princess Grace Memorial.
There is no chain of evidence to establish that Edmond and Vivian alone were in the dressing room, Room 608 in the fire report.
There are no cell phone records introduced into evidence, only the contradictory testimony of Lily's paid agent Sonia.
The police could not produce the tape of their emergency calls for that night when requested by the investigating magistrate;
That tape alone had mysteriously vanished.
The fairy tale that Edmond strangled Vivian is too much to swallow. He was in the declining stages of Parkinson's; she was fit and active.
That there was a struggle over a locked door is also demonstrably false: locksmiths testifed the door was not locked.
By suppressing the penthouse security video tapes, the police emergency call tape, the cell phone records, and Ted Maher's freedom to speak, Monaco has been able to create a substitute reality.
Yet Monaco had to go to the extreme--and universally illegal--step of continuous sleep-deprivation;
It continued to awaken Ted every twenty to forty minutes to destroy his rest, and produce the state of confusion and the dark, sunken eyes.
Lily's Stanley Arkin defended Natasha Kagalovsky, wife of Konstantin Kagalovsky of Russia's Menatep Bank.
Natasha was involved in the Bank of New York (BONY) money-laundering scandal.
The chief prosecutor of Geneva said at the time of Safra's death that he was killed for cooperating with the FBI regarding the laundering of $4.8 billion in IMF loans to Russia through Republic.
The disposition of that $4.8 billion remains an ongoing investigation:
Swiss prosecutors investigating the misappropriation of $ 4.8 billion lent to Russia by the International Monetary Fund during the financial meltdown of 1998 have met resistance from the fund, which has denied them access to information crucial to their inquiry, the Financial Times reported. Swiss investigating judge Laurent Kasper-Ansermet has asserted that he has obtained testimony of IMF money transfers between the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Russian central bank and several other Russian banks being diverted "to benefit third parties" via Switzerland, and that these funds "were not used to serve the goals of the IMF." However, according to Kasper-Ansermet, the IMF has ignored his request for a list of Russian banks which had received portions of the 1998 loan.
While Monaco authorities can't even transfer the money Ted's wife wires him for toiletries.
Somerset Maugham described Monaco as "a sunny place for shady people"--

I don't believe I've ever heard any more sage advise than that, 'round here.
I mean your insight reminds me of the cruises I've taken to the lower antilles.
Anyone who's on the ball knows damned well what can, will, & does happen to the American tourist -- on any one of the islands -- who thinks for one instant they can get away with the same kind of *recreational* shenanigans as they do here, stateside; when/if, they're offered the opportunity by locals.
Such an individual risks (~terribly) becoming the *chump* in a sting that'll land 'em in the slammer; where, they'll be milked of their American $$s until they have *no* more.
A dream vacation turned into a nightmare in the time it takes to snap one's fingers.
Now, sounds as if the same -- & much more potentially serious -- risks lie in store for those who'd accept foriegn employment; in, some places.

Dr. Michael Baden said Vivian Torrente died of trauma to the throat, not asphyxiation.
Dr. Michael M. Baden is a Board-certified, forensic pathologist who is a co-Director of the New York State Police Medicolegal Investigation Unit. From 1961 to 1986, Dr. Baden worked in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City and was the Chief Medical Examiner from 1978 to 1979. He was also the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner for Suffolk County from 1981 to 1983. He has held professorial appointments at Albert Einstein Medical School, Albany Medical College, New York Law School and John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
He was the chairman of the Forensic Pathology Panel of the U.S. Congress Select Committee on Assassinations that investigated the deaths of president John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Baden has been involved as an expert in forensic pathology in many cases of international interest including:
The examination of the remains of Tsar Nicholas of Russia and his family
The Claus Von Bulow murder trial
Marlon Brando's son's murder trial
Dr. Baden has been involved as an expert witness for the defense in the O.J. Simpson trial

He also published a factual account of several of his cases in the book Unnatural Death, Confessions of a Medical Examiner and was the subject for 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 HBO specials that highlighted several of his interesting cases demonstrating the value of forensic sciences allied with solid police investigative techniques in homicide investigation.
The unidentified male DNA under Edmond Safra's fingernails was not that of Ted Maher.
How did Edmond's blood spatter Vivian's bra, panties, and barette/nursing cap?
Why did Lily cremate Edmond and bury him--not in Israel as he wanted--in Switzerland?
The son and daughter of Vivian Torrente are suing Lily and Sonia and the curious firm of theirs, "Spotless & Brite",
--plus lots and lots of John and Jane Does.
Lily paid Sonia $100,000 and Vivian's husband Ireneo $2,000,000--
But Ireneo burned his lawyers and they're suing him;
--and the son and daughter are suing Lily and Sonia.
Monaco threw a tarp over Dr. Michael Baden and hustled him offstage before he could really screw things up.
