I am posting this because I came across sit-rep.com earlier this morning (3 AM I couldn't sleep well)and I found some articles from the FreeRepublic gang in there and thought this one was so on target it needs to be posted on here. I apologize if it has been in the past but I did a title search and found nothing. Victoria...you have a way with words my dear.

The Making of an American Terrorist ©

John Walker, a 20 year-old privileged son of Frank Lindh and Marilyn Walker, was caught fighting in Afghanistan against America. He was arrested near Mazar-e-Sharif, calling himself Abdul Hamid and carrying an AK-47 ready to kill his fellow countrymen. After the USS Cole was bombed by Osama Bin Laden's terrorists killing 17 American servicemen, John Walker wrote to his father that "the attack had been justified, since by docking the ship in Yemen, the United States had committed an act of war." Before joining the Taliban, John Walker dropped out of Tamiscal High School --an elite school-- at age 16. He then traveled to Yemen to learn to speak Arabic, and to Pakistan to join a madrassa in a stronghold of Islamist extremists.

How did an educated pampered son of affluent American liberal parents end up fighting alongside the Taliban?

Liberalism attracts the mentally and spiritually weak, sweeping them up in its seductive but ultimately fatal embrace. John Walker's parents rejected traditional moral distinctions between good and evil/right and wrong in favor of ethical relativism and PC values, such as diversity, tolerance and non-judgmentalism. Without conviction, moral absolutes or ability to discern simple truths, they adopted a laissez faire approach to child rearing, without rules, moral instruction or discipline. Products of a generation accustomed to distrust and question all authority, they lacked the will and the wherewithal to exercise parental authority. When forced to confront their son's desires at odds with their own, they invariably chose the path of least resistance toward expediency and conciliation.

Despite the lack of discipline and moral instruction, John Walker probably learned much from his parents. He probably learned that liberalism condones and celebrates totalitarian dictatorships and fanatical revolutionary ideologues. He must have learned that certain forms of bigotry are not only permissible, but mandatory, if its targets were Republicans, white males, black conservatives, pro-life advocates, evangelical and fundamentalist Christians, cigarette smokers and gun owners. He surely learned to show zero tolerance for opposing viewpoints and how to demonize and destroy one's political opponents. He undoubtedly was taught to despise his country and to blame America for most of the evils in the world.

I suspect that John Walker learned to be a good Liberal from the example of his parents. Joining forces with the Taliban and the Al Qaeda network was the logical next step.

Don't forget also: snowmobilers, meat eaters, fat heterosexuals, and people who don't grow or buy organic.

Is it any wonder that Johnnie Jihad grew up in the North Bay... aka Whine Country.

Dynamite piece, Victoria.

Let me join the chorus: Great article!

Strange how tangled it all is. The fellow wants out of his parents' kind of life so he goes for discipline, focus, toughness, and rules - but he can't help being a product of his parents' kind of life - so he makes that move in a sick way that causes the maximum harm to others. He rejected the slackness but kept the contempt that you mention for less "enlightened" people.

Wow. Those two paragraphs are the most eloquent and powerful truisms I have seen in a long time.

Bump for your talent.
