This is the much vaunted Conservative Index list which I have been promoting. It is published every 4-6 months by the New American magazine, which champions conservative principles and America First policies. You will find this list to be the most accurate measure of conservativeness available for our House and Senate members. It is far and away more accurate than the much discredited American Conservative Union "Conservative Rating" listing which ends up measuring party loyalty (voting with the GOP House or Senate leadership) rather than votes that tend to show adherence to conservative principles.

To provide context to this list, as a general rule conservatives are anyone that has a Conservative Index score around 65% or better. Moderate conservatives fall into the 50-65% range, moderates in the 40s and liberals in the 30s and below so the listing of conservative Senators above is fairly comprehensive while the more numerous House of Reps scores above omits many good conservatives of which there tend to be around 35-40, in this case all of whom are probably Republicans.

Ron Paul almost always scores as the top conservative followed by Dana Rohrabacher and Bob Barr in the House. In the Senate, Bob Smith (a personal hero of mine) usually scores as the top conservative and Don Nickles who I have long been trying to recruit to run against Trent Lott for Senate Minority Leader usually scores in the top ten. The Senate conservative numbers were unusually low presumably due to the fact that the GOP supported more liberal "bipartisan" legislation than normal. The other surprising thing is the fact that Rep. Tancredo (R-CO) scored #1 conservative in the house besting even traditional conservative champion, Ron Paul. If I am correct in assuming that this is the same Rep. Tancredo that has been leading the charge against Bush on Bush's indefensible support of open-borders immigration, then we have got a new veritable conservative hero/icon on our hands in the House of Reps!!

If your Congressman or Senator is not on this list or if they score in the 65% conservative or below range, you need to call them and urge them to do better. Other House and Senate Leader scores include Trent Lott a moderate conservative scoring a bit higher than normal at 62%, current House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) at 65% and future House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) at 68% both scoring unusually high in the "low" conservative range. Speaker Hastert voted so seldomly, he could not be scored (even less than is traditional for House Speakers) but generally he scores in the 50s as a moderate conservative.

Well, well, well, Bob Smith is on the list. I wonder how all the Smith bashers feel now? Or maybe those that bash Smith aren't really conservative at all.

Exactly. The guy their pushing on unsuspecting NH Republicans to replace him, Rep. John Sununu doesn't even make the TOP FIFTY conservatives in the House of Reps. Sen. Bob Smith on the other hand is the conservative champion of the entire US Senate based on his typical Conservative Index scores which are generally in the 90s! Anyone who bashes Sen. Robert Smith, a longtime incumbent conservative Republican Senator, merely proves to all concerned that they are not conservative, but are RINOs who will never fail to put party over conservative principles!

I don't feel bad about Smith at all; BS is a liability. Next week he might get a wild hair and join the Greens. Wishy-washy conservatives are ultimately a liability. If Smith beats Sununu, loses to Shaheen in the general, and the Dems hold a one sear majority come Jan 3rd 2003, then Smith will have cost the conservative movement, not helped it. Like Buchanan, he is now more of a liability than an asset. BTW, "vote-getter" Bob just barely eked out a victory in his last election; so, diehard Republicans like myself, the very ones who put him into ofc, are not going to be that charitable this time around. If nothing changes between now and primary day, Sununu will bop "Bobert" right out of ofc. And Smith, being the moron that he is, will probably run as a 3rd party candidate and hand the election to Shaheen anyway. I can see him joining the LP; as stupid and ridiculous as he acted in 2000, his defection to the LP would be totally consistent and in line with those actions 2 years ago.....

Unfortunately Smith is victim of the White Houses elect my daddy's buddies policy which seems to be a sole qualifying condition for an endorsement from the White House. Smith made a few mistakes but Sununu will be a bust as a senator. The same thing in Tenneseee where FOD {friend of daddy} Lamar Alexander is being pushed to replace leaving Fred Thompson. Congressman Ed Bryant has a proven conservative record at being conservative especially on second ammendment but instead a political has been F.O.D. is being annointed by Washington even before Fred Thompson had the words out of his mouth. Bush needs to stop it with political family favors and concentrate on the nations problems especially till the primaries are over. Bush hates conservatives!!!!

Then you explain why he is pushing a former governor who has not been elected to any office in 20 years? And no it wasn't because he did not run for office. I'll do you one better than that you show me the last Tennessee governor elected to any office by the peoples vote after serving as governor. None have been elected senator BTW. Why isn't the White House supporting Ed Bryant over Lamar Alexander? History says Alexander does not stand a chance. Alexander is a moderate BTW and Bryant is Conservative. Why Smith over his Daddys friends son? Why the former mayor of LA {another Daddy friend} over Simon? With Bush in office a conservative does not stand a chance of GOP support if a family friend can run instead.
