The exploits of Markus Hirsch, 17, come only days after British surveillance enthusiast John Locker was able to hack into US spy satellite pictures.

Now an FBI team is on its way to Vienna to question Markus. Their big fear is that Osama bin Laden followers may have enjoyed similar access for months. Full Story

The US Govt needs to hire these hackers! It's obvious that they could use the help in detecting breaches in their system.

It could be as simple as finding one or two that were already infected by the NIMDA virus, and breezing straight in.

Yes, and the Nimda-infected machines advertise themselves (by attempting to infect other web servers, producing telltale log entries containing the IP address of the compromised machine).

Hi Michael,

Sounded like your criticism might have been directed at the poster of this thread, but the article, headline too, comes from a legitimate website,

"Associated Newspapers Ltd.. "Part of the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard, and Metro Media Group". A British news consortioum.

Oh those Brits!

Exactly. Why is this data in a computer hooked to an internet router? How stupid are we getting? Man, I long for the days pre-Clinton.

See post #13. I remember your post from a couple of days ago. This tells what some in Washington DC are doing.

Don't be so hasty. This kid's not a "spy" - he probably just stumbled across a horribly unsecured Pentagon web page. The idiots at the Pentagon who put this stuff in a web-accessible domain are the ones who should be executed. And hire this kid to replace them.

this is what happens when Sun and Oracle are leading the "internet security" solution. Or are those servers "microsoft OS" ????

The world wonders.

Great, just what we've always needed. Maybe that's the reasoning behind this article. Maybe it's about time I went out and bought some myself.

Trust me, there are no unprotected NT servers sitting around at Army Installations. Besides, even if there were some NT servers with security holes in them.... our routers have the ports blocked. Not that the technical jargon matters much, but since the Chinese Hacker Scare last May, DOD and the Govt have locked down pretty good. I know, I see our efforts paying dividends every day.

ACERT is a good place to look if you have concerns about computers.

including the location of US nuclear missiles.

BFD. All you need to figure that out here in Montana is an SUV with a full tank of gas. If you drive in any direction from Great Falls, you can see the silos off the side of the road. The barbed wire fences with signs that say, "Restricted Area. Use of deadly force authorized" are a dead giveaway.
