Thanks for the ping, Ritwngr. We talked about the picnic at the DC Chapter of Free Republic meeting last Sunday. I'm sure that a bunch of us will be there. I went last year as did Angelwood, Kristinn, Taxman and a few other DC Chapter members I'm sure I missed in the crowd... and we all had a great time. There was lots of good food, great conversation, terrific speakers...

The Leadership Institute provides the barbecued meats (last year was pork BBQ), drinks (sodas, too), and other basics; they ask attendees to bring side dishes to share. So, don't forget to bring a side dish or dessert (I make one that will serve a dozen or so) with you!

"U.S. Senator George Allen"

Really?! That sounds like it might just be worth a trip up I-95, and my brother's annual party doesn't start until 4 or so...what time will Asa and George be speaking?

What a great irony that my friends (or perhaps these days, former friends) at Leadership Institute will have D.E.A. "head" Asa Hutchinson speak as our nation celebrates Independence Day. While Asa speaks of freedom and heritage, he & his lackies will continue their war on marijuana in general and medicinal marijuana patients in particular. While Asa praises our founding fathers, his D.E.A will continue to prohibit the cultivation of hemp, which just miles from L.I.'s picnic, was grown by Washington, Jeffrerson and others. I love & greatly respect Mort Blackwell and I think L.I. has done a tremendous job in educating and training our future conservative leaders, which we need. Someday, perhaps true conservatives will understand the lunacy of our nation's marijuana & hemp policies & laws and restore the right (taken away only this century) of responsible adult Americans to grow hemp or marijuana to do with as they please -- as did our founding fathers. Then all of these people parading around as so "conservative" will be outed for the neo-cons they actually are. I will join my friends on the Mall for the Fourth. Let true (not phony neo-con) freedom ring: THIMMESCH

I will join my friends on the Mall for the Fourth. Let true (not phony neo-con) freedom ring.

I hate to tell you, but I read somewhere that the Mall will be fenced on the Fourth. If it's anything like the fencing for the Bush Inaugural, freedom is the last thing you'll be feeling.

I can't figure out why Coors is sponsoring this L.I. event since the corporate policies of Coors no longer support conservative values.

As an employee of the Leadership Institute, I can easily say that while we don't take a position on the legalization of marijuana or other drugs, Asa Hutchinson is a patriot, pure and simple.

And frankly, my friend...I think I'm slightly more relieved to have someone of Asa's character helping to secure our borders, especially during this time of war.

But come one, come all - it'll be a great party at Ft. Hunt Park.

(oh, and while I'm sure that there's lots of rumors flying around regarding Coors, I can also say that the Coors family are still great friends to conservatives, and we're happy to have their support for the event)

I don't know if what I've read about Coors on FR is rumor or not. Put the word "Coors" in the search engine and you'll see what I based my comment on. I like Asa and I especially like George Allen. One of these days I plan to mount an official George Allen for President in 2008 campaign on FR and document what he does so people can come to know him.

Thank you for the invitation. I've been to several of your Fourth picnics over the years and have always enjoyed the company and the speakers. Anyone looking for some like-minded comraderie that's casual, low-key, and not in DC, this is the place.
