I am pretty sure that they were, at least AFTER the fact. This was one of the major items that the freepers active at that time can likely provide you links to. I became acrive at the tail end of this, and can't do so.

Don Adams has never been directly associated with FreeRepublic; his sister Teri Adams joined FR after the incident.

Five Freepers were present at the October 2, 1998 event. As far as I know, I was the only one of us who was injured (everyone was threatened and intimidated). I was assaulted by the mob some two hours before the Adamses got stomped. I wasn't beaten; I was merely roughed up a bit.
