Media Goes Ga-Ga Over Cheney Hecklers (FR mentioned)
NewsMax.com ^ | Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff

Hardly a radio or television news broadcast transpired on Wednesday without prominent mention of the handful of hecklers who attempted to disrupt Vice President Dick Cheney's speech to the Commonwealth Club of California with shouts of "Cheney is a corporate crook."

The media's near blanket coverage of the anti-Cheney chanters comes despite the lack of a single witness alleging any corporate crookery whatsoever against the VP. The stunt alone, it seems, was newsworthy enough for most editors.

The Clinton administration, of course, never had to worry about scandal driven heckling.

It's not that protesters didn't show up regularly throughout the ex-president's two terms. It's just that when they did, the press helpfully declined to cover the confrontations.

Throughout 1999 and 2000, for instance, hecklers routinely dogged both Bill and Hillary Clinton over the claims of Juanita Broaddrick, the Arkansas businesswoman who maintains she was raped by Mr. Clinton 24 years ago.

Nearly every weekend during that two year period, a hearty band of demonstrators from the Web site FreeRepublic.com staked out their appearances in Washington and New York; colorful signs, costumes and catchy chants at the ready.

Mainstream media interest in covering the anti-Clinton demonstrations was nearly nonexistent. Even when two of them were beaten up at one Philadelphia protest by goons wearing T-shirts reading "Teamsters for Clinton," the press by and large looked the other way.

The media's breathtaking double standard has finally begun to take its toll on the Bush administration, with Mr. Cheney now effectively sidelined in order to dodge an all but certain media mauling the next time he pops his head into the sunshine.

This would be the same bunch of dogged investigative journalists who asked Mr. Clinton one time and one time only about the rape allegations pending against him. Then, when his lawyer told reporters to move on, they obediently did so.

For the sake of their own political survival, not to mention the interests of the people who voted them into office, the Bush political team needs to force the issue.

Reporters should to be told in no uncertain terms: The White House will entertain no further questions on the accounting practices at Halliburton and Harken Energy - until Mr. Clinton and his wife are pressed for answers about the most heinous crime ever alleged against a President of the United States.

When reporters finally browbeat the truth out of the former first couple, then and only then should they get their Cheney press conference.

Lets keep our heads people. Bush/Cheney is not the salvation of this country (Jesus is), but if y'all want to spend precious heartbeats comparing notes about whether the kettle is blacker than the pot, then you all can do so.

I just hope that FreeRepublic can deal with more important issues, like for example the issue of Posse Comitatus.

The Bush administration "has called upon Congress to thoroughly review the law that bans the Army, Navy, Air FOrce and Marines from participating in arrests, search, seizure of evidence, and other police-type activity on U.S. soil." reported the 21 Jul 02 Washington Post. The law in question is the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act, which ended federal occupation and military dictatorships imposed on the Sothern states in the wake of the Civil War. The Act's intent was to defend American's against the prospect of standing against a standing army of occupation. - a concern frequently expressed by the framers of the Constitution.

Ruling elites generally amass despotic powers amid agonies of professed reluctance, and homeland security advisor Tom Ridge followed that tradition when addressing the posse comitatus issue in a 21 Jul 02 TV interview. According to Ridge, , "it goes against our instincts as a country to empower the military with the ability arrest." Ah, but the Bush administration somehow overcame that instinctive aversion when it filed a legal brief claiming that the president and his military subordinates can designate any individual an "enemy combatant" and detain them indefinately - and that such designation cannot be challenged in court.

I think it would be remiss of us not to acknowledge that from time to time NewsMax takes a lot of ribbing from contributors here. I'd like to think that the next time someone has the urge to make some snide remark regarding them, they'd think about this article. Freepers didn't have to be mention prominantly.

Thanks NewsMax. You're right on the money here!

To me Raygun, the issue isn't support or not support of Bush/Cheney, but the DOUBLE STANDARD of big media. They ARE biased, and continue to subtley and not so subtley support leftist positions and politicians. The stark contrast to covering Cheney hecklers now and completely ignoring Clinton hecklers then is glaringly obvious, and should make us all angry. It is not reporting facts and letting us decide, but skewing the news of the day.

Isn't the answer to this for Freepers to show up whenever Cheney is around and Freep the press for failing to hound Billary; Robert Rubin; and each and every Clinton Lackey. The Press must never get a pass on their complicity. And besides, Freeping is patriotic and fun. V's wife.

Excellent idea! It is time to confront the Press at every opportunity.

After September 11, huge numbers of Americans are listening to more talk radio, and have become more interested in political ideas, but have a need for much MORE exposure to the "truths that we (Freepers) hold to be self-evident", namely the pervasive bias against conservative ideas and persons. We could really help these new-to-politics citizens by pointing out the the unfairness of news coverage at every possible opportunity.

Were these Freepers that got beaten up?

Don Adams has never been directly associated with FreeRepublic; his sister Teri Adams joined FR after the incident.

Five Freepers were present at the October 2, 1998 event. As far as I know, I was the only one of us who was injured (everyone was threatened and intimidated). I was assaulted by the mob some two hours before the Adamses got stomped. I wasn't beaten; I was merely roughed up a bit.

If you click on my screen name and look at my bookmarks, you'll find a number of threads about the events of that day.

The civil trial is moving forward. I haven't spoken to Don in a while, but he was doing well when we last spoke. In 2000 he ran for the Republican nomination to stand against democrat congressman Joe Hoeffel, but he dropped out when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The surgery was successful.

Yesterday's anti-Cheney protest was orchestrated, or at least heavily promoted, on democrats.com

Common sense dictates that I not post a link.

...The media's near blanket coverage of the anti-Cheney chanters ...

Indeed, television coverage of Cheney's 45-minute speech at the Commonwealth Club in California was focused on a 15-second outburst by less than 5 morons in the audience. I saw no effort to report on the substance of his speech, which in my view, was far mor newsworthy based on his limited appearances over the past several weeks.

Ann Coulter I'm sure is taking notes for Slander v2.0.

Fox News was the only one to cover our protests nation wide, and yet as is typical of some on FR they tried to eat them, along with Rush, each other, etc.

We have lost our momentum and have become ineffective. And believe me, even though we were not reported we were effective. It shook the corrupt foundations of our criminal major new networks to see ordinary Americans on the street nation wide that didn't have to be paid to protest. It rocked their little world to see for real citizens, not members of some NGO or well financed group, out on the street and fiercly angry.

Now we are all snoozing while the enemies of our nation grow stronger and ever more organized. There is no excuse not to be protesting outside of local news networks demanding they drop Blather, Jennings, and Co. from their programing. I remember when local stations were actually talking about doing so. All they needed was a push and we stopped pushing.

It looks to me like this is simply another fine example of the leftist media on display . Purely partisan . This is 1 reason why conservatives will not make it in the left's domain .

Just as well .. Conservatives have a stranglehold on the market of books , hate radio , and the web . Has anyone ever heard of the term " Big Media " ? I have not , and it is not a shock .

Jorge .. Is this not the very thing you uncover in the course of you're fine contribution's ? I do believe it is .. Bump Mr. Cheney , and to exposing the left . Let's keep educating the uninformed !
