The Canadian Dollar and the Budget Surplus

By

James Bredin

When the Canadian dollar goes up point two of a cent,
The socialists celebrate and say it’s ‘cause there’s no descent,
And their headlines proclaim the fundamentals are in place,
We’re not in freefall so there’s no currency disgrace.

But then the dollar continues its slow decent to hell,
Continues it’s thirty-year drop but everything is swell,
Dollar is going to gain against the greenback they say,
Everything is great according to that recent survey.

When it’s fixed at fifty cents will we feel a little foolish,
As they tell us it was unexpected outlandish and ghoulish,
It’s not us who are at fault; it’s the Americans you see,
They don’t have bilingualism or multiculturalism on TV.

That’s what’s important – not the value of your dollar,
It’s culture, heritage and the Charter, so don’t holler,
And we need to tax and spend more and travel the globe,
So listen up now and pay attention and don’t ever probe.

When the dollar drops to a dime will we finally dollarize?
Or still listen to our politicians as they travel and socialize?
‘Cause they’re predicting a four percent growth next year,
Have we heard this before; should we stand up and cheer?

And last years budget surplus that vanished overnight,
Poor people of the world needed money and we’re very polite,
And the Access Act hid it all but we did the right thing,
And in twenty years you may find out ‘bout this gigantic sting.

Canada should be one of the richest countries on earth. Huge natural resource stores. Due to human socialist idiocy, they will end up as a third-world wasteland.

Canada is actually a great place to visit; (not sure I'd want to live there). Everything you buy for a Canadian $ only costs about 66 cents US, and the prices at hotels, restaurants are about the same as the U.S. (hence a 1/3 discount on everything). The harmonized sales tax is 15%, but you get that back on hotels and on goods brought back to the U.S.

The country is sparsely populated almost everywhere except Ontario (Toronto), and very civilized--low crime and friendly people.

I go to the Atlantic provinces a couple of times a year (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland/Labrador, and sometimes Quebec) and just ignore the politics, which don't affect you very much as a visitor.

Nice place to visit - sort of. On several fishing trips to northern Ontario, I have had teens bascially yell at me: "Go home Americans!" I suspect that this type of harassment will increase over time. Also, I have cut across Ontario on trips from Michigan to New York many times. I get to drive on my favorite highway, the QEW. Rush hour on the QEW is wild! Bumper to bumper, 100 MPH , 3 lanes, semi's, garbage trucks, econo-boxes, eternal construction, motorcycles; the weak are killed and eaten! I have learned that the trick to driving on it is to show no fear and tail-gate whatever vehicle is in front of you by less than 4 inches.

I've had teens scream "go home yankee" in Texas, and "go home redneck" in New Jersey. I don't think it's fair to judge the country by a few belligerent teenagers.

Personally, I don't think we could ask for a better ally and neighbor than Canada. There have been multiple threads about their help in Afghanistan, and my frequent visits there have always been a pleasure.

Now if they would just quit putting mayonaise on the hamburgers....

Unless you wear aftershave or deodorant. I was in Sydney last month and there were signs everywhere proclaiming "scent-free workplaces." They even jailed a kid for wearing cologne to school.

The stength of the USD versus the CAD allowed me to buy a $3000 outboard motor for $1750 a couple months ago.

Even with shipping to Texas I saved more than a thousand bucks. I hope they don't change a thing! I may buy my next car up there.

I doubt that we will ever be a third world wasteland.

If and when that would happen, I think the US would have a tough time finding another supplier of natural gas, oil, hydro power, etcetra.

As far as the CDN. $$ goes, I hope it stays there forever. If we produce something here for a dollar, and sell it to you for a 1.60, we will be a long time becoming a third world country. Regards

Good point about currency exchange rate mechanism.... notice how the BOJ (Bank of Japan) often times steps into the currency markets to buy massive quantities of USDollars, thus keeping the greenback strong, and the Yen weak, to benefit their exporters. Currency strengths and weaknesses work both ways.

What about vinager on fries?

Years ago I was in North Carolina with my son who asked for gravy on his fries. You know , that thick, hot, dark brown beef gravy we have here. Well he got this cold gray goo that tasted like it could substitute for plaster. On second thought I do remember something about biscuits ....

Canada should be one of the richest countries on earth. Huge natural resource stores. Due to human socialist idiocy, they will end up as a third-world wasteland.

A more likely scenario is that Canada will be gradually absorbed the the United States.

Here is how I think it will play out:

In the not so distant future, one or more of the saner provinces in Canada will have had enough of socialism and will "secede" from Canada at which time they will petition the United States for membership. The process will be quicker than one might think because of our similar cultures and also because there is language in the Articles of Confederation specific to Canada that allows them entry into the United States at some later time.

Once one province decides to abandon Canada and joins the United States, others will follow like dominoes. There will be some stubborn holdout provinces, but eventually they will all come to see that once you get down to it, Americans and Canadians pretty much stand for the same things and that we are better off together than apart. Alaska will finally be joined with the rest of the USA and with Canada added in, the United States will be the largest (in area) nation on Earth with an astonishing amount of untapped natural resources.

Sound farfetched? What if I told you 20 years ago that not only would the Soviet Union soon crumble, but that they would reject Communism in the process and that Germany would be reunited as one nation? You all would have laughed at me for being so naive. Actually the USA and Canada uniting as one nation (with Canada adopting our Constitution and Bill of Rights, of course) is far more plausible today than the prospect of the Soviet Union breaking up back in 1980.

Lastly, I know there are many Canadian Freepers here who are just as proud of their country as we Americans are of ours and I mean you guys no disrespect. But I feel that we are better off merging as one larger and more powerful nation. Perhaps you guys, once you attain U.S. citizenship, will tilt the political balance towards capitalism and conservatism for once and for all. So not only will liberalism and socialism be defeated up there but it will be defeated down here as well.

And you get used to metric speed limits in the Great White North! Gotta love the freeway system in the Greater Toronto area.... one thing that can be said for Canadians, they make getting to where you want to go as easy as pie. And then there's the fact that for American visitors everything is one-third cheaper! Sure, Canada would benefit from switching to the U.S dollar but Canadians fear losing their identity and a large factor in the British North American colonies decision not to follow the Yanks during the mid nineteeth century in severing ties with the mother country was the perception if they did it they would probably have been absorbed by the U.S. Had that been the case America would really have been awesome to look at from pole to pole.

Yes, there are tons of services and products from Canada that Americans are buying more often as the Canadian dollar drops. A low Canadian dollar sucks business from the US. Because of Canada's proximity to the US, practically every market is affected.
