I was reading a Tom Clancy novel and came across the word Strela. Did you take the name from the novel? It means arrow, by the way.

Actually, no. I first stumbled across the term in the early 80s in my work in the Navy. Then as now, it refers to the Russian SA-7 shoulder-launched SAM missile, NATO-designation "Grail". They were actually supplied to Soviet armed forces as early as 1967.

I got a bow and arrow set for Christmas when I was 10, and have been an archer since then. Since, as you pointed out, "strela" is the Russian word for arrow, I continued to use the name as a pseudonym for my Dungeons and Dragons character (also an archer), when I played Amtgard (a live-action medieval-themed role playing game, where I play an archer), then continued to use it when I discovered the Internet, chat, and FreeRepublic.

I like the meaning of the word. I love archery, though I can't pull much more than a toy bow and arrow. It seems to be such a clean sport.

Archery is also a quiet sport (which my parents probably intended when Santa brought me the bow and arrow in the first place; they were probably sick of hearing the continuous gunplay and the death throes of the Indian loudly shot by the cowboy in the back yard for the umpteenth time).

To me, archery is challenging because there are variables such as wind conditions, arm and shoulder strength and steadiness, the drag between the arrow and the bow, the condition and orientation of the fletches on your arrow, and the amount of pull you exert on the bowstring. These are all things that an archer must adjust or account for in order to shoot accurately. I never miss any coverage of Olympic archery competitions if I can avoid it; the best archers are a treat to watch and I pick up a lot of tips from them.

People have many different ways that they meditate; some stand on their heads, some assume the Lotus position, a few hang upside down in inversion boots, while others just sit and woolgather. My method is to shoot arrows into targets as quickly and accurately as I can.

Just thought I would post a link to the DUmmies commentary on this thread since they are jealous of it. It's funny to see their true colors come through. What a hateful bunch of losers. Mostly they make fun of people's looks. How very progressive of them. They dream to make a trip to Vegas if only they could get time away from their armpit hair braiding buisness.
