Stockton Muslims object to '60 Minutes' interview
By Julie Davidow Record Staff Writer Published Saturday, October 5, 2002
Members of Stockton's Muslim community are calling on CBS-TV to cancel its scheduled broadcast of an interview with the Rev. Jerry Falwell on the program "60 Minutes" in which Falwell refers to the Islamic prophet Muhammad as a terrorist.
Stockton Muslims said they object to airing an interview with "60 Minutes" reporter Bob Simon in which the conservative Baptist leader tells Simon that Muhammad was "a violent man, a man of war."
Leaders at Friday's prayer service at the Islamic Center on Pilgrim Road in south Stockton asked congregants to call CBS News and send faxes explaining their objections.
"This is not true what he says," said Obed Urrahman Rahman, a former imam at the Stockton mosque. "Non-Muslim people will hear this and get suspicious (about Islam). This is bad information from someone at this level."
Islamic Center leaders passed out the phone and fax numbers for CBS after the service Friday afternoon. Rahman said at least 200 people wrote down the contact information.
About 1,000 Muslims, mostly from Stockton, worship at the mosque.
"Everybody in the prayer had a little talk about" Falwell's comments, said Mumtaz Ameen, a 22-year-old Stockton resident. "It was really disturbing. We called CBS to see if they can cancel the program."
Officials at CBS, which released a partial transcript of the interview with Falwell on Thursday, could not be reached for comment late Friday.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Falwell stood by his statements about the Muslim prophet. "Islam, like most faiths, has a fringe of radicals who carry on bloodshed wherever they are. They do not represent Islam," Falwell said.

I'm sorry, but your political views are currently identicle to the terrorist demands being placed on the freedom loving world and will not be advanced in my country.

"Islam, like most faiths, has a fringe of radicals who carry on bloodshed wherever they are. They do not represent Islam," Falwell said.
I reckon it's time to call a spade a spade.
Extremist Minorities are everywhere, Tim Mcveigh was a Christian, therefore are all Christian terrorists?
NO
Vietnam Vet's were accused of killing babies, does this make all Americans, baby killers?
NO
Fallwell and the others are trying to cause problems and racial strife, as they believe it will bring about the Armageddon.
If you think racial riots and wars cannot come to the Good Old USA, think again.
Muslims live their religion; Christians live their lives to the fullest and fit religion in wherever possible. So to insult Muslims in general, is insulting their whole way of live, and some people are prepared to die for their Religion.
I seriously doubt whether many Christians would, especially the Fallwell brigade.
"You want the truth? You can't take the truth!"
Not anymore then they already are.
Falwell has simply spoken the truth. Now, some could argue that Mohammad was a terrorist and some might choose to call him a warrior prophet, or some other politically correct name that befits his contemporary status.
There are essentially two questions here. Where have people like you been since 9-11-2001? And where have people like you been since 1979?
Militant radical fundamentalist Muslim's have been at war with the US since the Iran Revolution of 1979. 9-11 was the finishing touch to over twenty years of terrorist attack after terrorist attack on American interests throughout the world. The 1990`s drove this home in a most pointed fashion.
>>>There are approximately 8 million Muslims in North America. The last thing we need is a racial war/riots in the US. Which is exactly what could happen, with imbeciles like Fallwell.
There are over 1- billion Muslim's in the world today and since the events of 9-11 they have been silent in condemning these heinous acts. This includes the eight million American Muslim's and worldwide Islamic leadership too.
Don't blame Jerry Falwell in your attempts to use him as a scapegoat. The problems of the Islamic religion lays squarely at the feet of Muslim's themselves. Let's blame the majority of Muslim's who hate the US and the others who are indifferent to the killing of American's, in the name of Allah. There is a large minority of Muslim's, who hate Jews and Christian's alike. In fact, many Muslim's have no love for anyone who isn't a Muslim.
I agree he may have the constitutional right to free speech. But if it incites Racial Hatred, then it is a crime.
If you want to go back in history, the Israeli army occupying most of Palestine since 1967 is a prime example.
If they were not there, then possibly the hatred the entire Middle East has for the Israeli occupation and the US Governments biased support, would be limited.
I do not support the radical Muslims for a second, and if they are caught, they should be tried and dealt with, however the law court decides, as should all criminals, no matter what their affiliation, religious persuasion or nationality.
However a Muslim fundamentalist that is prepared to kill innocent people, does not mean that all Muslims want to kill innocent people and to suggest that, is just immature on your part and stokes the fire of Racial Hatred.
That would be some good news for a change.
