THERE are few things more repugnant to a soldier than a coward who claims to speak on his behalf. At present, there seems no end of politicians and pundits claiming we dare not strike Saddam because of the danger of friendly casualties. Self-appointed voices of conscience warn of tens of thousands of American dead.

In the face of the awesome power we are going to bring to bear from every conceivable angle and with the speed of revelation, the Iraqi regime's weapons of mass destruction would be little more than suicide kits...My own worst fear would be Saddam's use of chemical or biological weapons on his own people, killings many thousands of Arabs, just to kill some hundreds of Americans.

Good point. When Saddam realizes his time is nearly up he may want to take revenge on the Iraqi people for "failing" him as well. What better way than to release bio-weapons in Iraqi cities?

Uh, why would he release them in Iraqi cities? Wouldn't it make more sense to release them over here?

Make no mistake: The anti-war voices long for us to lose any war they cannot prevent.

It was the same 30+ years ago and the same today. In fact it's many of the same folks. What these morons don't understand is
1 The world is full of people that only understand raw naked violence(I have a stick and if you're not nice I'm going to hit you with it)
2 The only people standing between them and the bullies of the world are the men an women in the military. And if they fail in thier job thesae "peace advocates" will be the first ones to stand up against the wall.

This has to be the best opening line in an essay I've read in a while. As a quote I think it stands up very nicely.

He might release them here if he could. But delivery is everything, and when American forces are surrounding Bagdhad, and he is holed up in a presidential palace with a handful of loyalists that might not be an option. At the end end in his bunker Hitler blamed the German people for failing him and said none should survive. I wouldn't put it past a sociopath like Saddam to want to take as many people with him as he could, and just set off whatever he still had access to. If that included smallpox for example it could ravage millions throughout the whole world, especially in the middle-east. Saddam being a meglomaniac who enjoys the suffering of others it wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Peters is a fine writer generally, and he's produced a handful of enduring epigrams. Another of my favorites, from his novel The War in 2020, is:
"Self-pity has ruined more good men than all the bad women that ever lived."

Now that's talent.

This is the single best article that I have yet read about the Iraq campaign and about the anti-war leftists.

There is nothing here that fails to commend the author, one who speaks with the authority of knowledge, nothing that carries anything other than the ring of truth.

Yeah, if congress is so concerned about losing so many soldiers, why don't they just vote to cut the military? Our fighting boys and girls won't die in war if they are not in the army.

The author is correct. The truth is they aren't afraid our men and women will die, they don't want us to win this war.

I do not underestimate the dangers or horrors of war. I value every American soldier's life. Even a few hundred casualties means a terrible burden of heartbreak for many an American family. I do not suggest the campaign against Iraq will be easy -- war is never easy. But we can do the hard stuff better than anyone else. And no one else has the will or the moral force to do it.
I totally agree.

Peters does not mean Saddam would target his own population, but that in the attempt to gas suited up US troops, lots of unprotectied civilians would die.

Saddam won't live long enough to assure his evil orders are carried out. The Ba'athist Party wants to survive, and if Saddam is silenced but we don't destroy the Ba'athists, we will have the harder task of keeping peace in the post Saddam Iraq.

We the People need more of these articulate military persons speaking out at this juncture ... to expose the despotic democrat party postponeNIKS for the dangerous appeasers they are. The coming election needs to find democrats out of power and disgraced for their mindset of blame America and fail America. What is irking the despotic democrats the most is, their champion, the disgraced and degenerate sinkEmperor clintoon failed to act when they gave him authority and now it is NOT al goreghoul kicking Saddam's ass (with the heroic, patriotic military) but a sincere man from Texas.

Since Vietnam, every time war is called for, a growing conservative number return from conflict, reminding the democrats of their bankruptcy. Saddam and the despotic democrats deserve each other ... and the Baghdad four, with Byrdbrain and Daschle have exposed their dangerous despotism. Let's hope America has been paying attention.
