I hope this doesn't violate a rule of some sort but it bears directly on several threads I've seen recently.

I have never been one to avoid speaking plainly with my kids about anything including politics, religion ect. Recently, my 11 year old son said he would be learning about islam in his geography class so I have been prepping him with some pertinant questions and info to "share" with his class. I also told him should his teachers in any way attempt to force him to violate his religious beliefs he should contact me emmediately.

Not ten minutes ago he called and said the class is engaged in an exercise where they are to pretend they are muslims and explore how they would react to being made to eat pork and/or other violations of the muslim faith. He sought my guidence in whether he should seek to excuse himself from this class or not.

My first reaction was to tell him ask to be excused, but on second thought I changed my mind and my aproach to this problem. I explained to him that he should return to class and say he has consulted with his imam who has now issued a fatwa against the NEA decreeing them to be infidel polluters of the faith and subject to jihadi action by all faithful followers of islam.

He's a sharp kid and he asked how far he can go with it. I told him that as his imam I am authorizing the blowing up of children, woman, non-combatants, old people, and TEACHERS in particular. This is a matter of self defense I said so killing them in nasty ways is morally justyfied by the teaching of the quran. I am awaiting his return from school or a call from his teacher.

I would love to hear from other FReepers what you all think about my little bit of activism. Again, my apologies if this is in the wrong forum or a breach of rules.

I think you did the right thing, if they so much as touch a hair on your kid's hair, expel, punish or anything, I'd sue. Enough is enough. Where is this school located? Contact your local news channel and TELL them what's going on. MAKE these so called educators explain why this is important to Johnny's education and why THIS doesn't violate separation of Church and State.

I'm printing out the pertinant passages from the islamic "book of peace" right now. He'll have them it in class tommorrow.

For all who think my son's ballsyness is my doing, thanks but he was born that way. I have 4 kids of which he is my second. He wasn't home a week and my wife and I both commented that he was different, headstrong, set in his ways. That's no exaggeration, either! He refused to talk till he was allmost two. NOT that he couldn't, he just wouldn't. We even asked a doc about it. At about two he decided that talking was a more effective means of communication and like that he kicked in with a vocabulary fit for a 4 year old. At 5 his teachers sent him to the school shrink because they thought he didn't smile enough. He told him he didn't think the teachers were all that funny!

He's a good boy with his head screwed on straight, for sure.

As someone else who considers the glass "half empth"; maybe we can take into consideration that many parents don't think our tax dollars should go towards touchy-feely lessons not based on reality regarding the "religion of peace"

Hoo-boy! I predict a better than even chance we will be reading about this in the paper before it is all over. That is a bizarre geography lesson. I'm especially interested in the context of the lesson. Who, specifically, is "forcing" the pretend muslims to eat pork and commit other violations of the muslim faith? (In other words, if it's some subtle brainwashing about how we are mistreating prisoners at Gitmo, I'm gonna puke.) Please ping me with updates, and thanks for an interesting thread!

I more subtle response would have been to instruct the kid to write that since the Muslim dietary laws are not much different than Jewish Kosher law, that he would accept that he lives in an unpure world and try to get along.

If this practice continues, as far as ISLAM is concerned, I DEMAND the return of Bible reading in class and anything pertaining to religion be re-instituted in our SCHOOLS! ..What's good for the goose is good for the gander, as the ol' saying goes....Kudos to you imam, I like your common sense approach and BBTT!

I think they are studying Turkey and that this is a sidebar excursion into the dominant faith there. How they will use it and to what end I will find out later when he gets home.

I suspect they chose Turkey as an example of islamic moderatism.

I think I'll hold off on the lawyers until I see how this pans out. There's an outside chance the teacher could be respectful of his opinions and the truth.
