It has become basically impossible to read and reply to Free Republic.
Unless, something is done to stop this nonsense, we can kiss Free Republic good bye and chalk up another censorship victory to the Perverts of the Dark Side.

>>Stop the posting of pictures until this is resolved.
Most of the pictures are not hosted on FR servers, and thus little affect server traffic. All that originates from FR is a little bit of HTML and a URL that reference the picture.
The slowness is a problem, however, and a DDOS attack is a possibility.

stop the threads that devour bandwidth like Freeper of the Day, the Daily Dose and other nice threads Would it help if people stopped posting idiotic vanity threads (which, until the quality of discouse here went to hell about a year ago, would have been deleted summarily)?
To: Grampa Dave
Dave,
Tha slow respoonse is a network/hardware problem. A switch, a router, a bad NIC card, rogue processes on the server, ALL could cause the problem. Not to mention a DDOS attack.

Hey Gramps, I'm used to slow. It isn't going to hurt me any. Those democraps ain't going to distress me.
To: Grampa Dave
I know your frustrated, but this has nothing to do with vanities or images. Vanities dont hurt FR as much when John Robinson put paging in(1-50,51-100 at the top of each thread).
Its like blaming bad fuel economy on my streering wheel.
If it helps, I got to
http://beta.freerepublic.com (notice the www. is replaced with a beta. try that...

Maybe we need another fundraiser?

No Daily Dose ?? OOOO Grampa, you're gonna have a lot of Bush Babes mad at you :)
I've been on most of the day (now on the beta site) this morning was fast as always, just started slowing down early this afternoon, could this be as simple as a lot of people trying to log on and comment ?? (seems like this is what happened right after Wellstone's plane went down) If this is a deliberate attack (hacker?) can it be traced ?

No wonder it's been slow the first half hour since I logged in.

Grampa, with all due respect............
peel open your wallet and pay for high-speed Internet access, would ya?? I'm no spring chicken myself, but I coughed up for high speed access and there is NO problem with download speeds, etc.
To equate slow refresh / download speeds with the downfall of FR due to Islamicists is a bit over the top, my friend. :)

The sky is falling, the sky is falling, we're all going to die! LOL, Dave, get a grip. If I had a dime for everytime FR slowed up like this over the years, I could retire.

It's a lot faster now.

I resent the use of the term "the Dark Side" in such a manner.
Here's Why. ;)
As for it being overrun, I'm sticking. I urge you to do the same.

They probably don't want us to be able to talk about all the ridiculous things the Dems have done recently, such as turning the Wellstone 'memorial service' into a political rally. (This is just the most recent idiocy from the Dems. There are so many to choose from)

Not allow new comers to log on until this is resolved.I would object very much to this, as I am expecting to hear any minute now that an old and dear friend has FINALLY decided to join up.
To: Grampa Dave
As you get older gramps, things appear to go slower than usual. Why, for the rest of us, FR access has been as fast as always. Swear it's true!
To: Grampa Dave
I thought that since an election is coming up, folks are tuning in to FR a LOT more...

"airedaletwo91402" posted the following on yahoo's freerepublic2 yesterday. The URL's given below are very informative regarding denial of service attacks, even to someone like me who has just a basic understanding of networking and internet routing. Computer geeks will really like it:
-begin-
For a DDOS you need far more than just one computer. A hacker has control of many many computers because of trojans or lack of firewalls. Each of those computers which are under the total control of the hacker via bots sends packets to a specific IP address. The shear number of packets being sent by the 100+ computers overwhelms the pipeline into the specific IP address. If you want to read about how this works and see what can be done by someone who knows how find the culprits go to
http://grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm and
http://grc.com/dos/drdos.htm It reads kind of like a Tom Clancy short story especially the first one.
The main URL for Gibbson Research Company (GRC) is
http://www.grc.com This is a internet security company and has a lot of other good stuff at it's site. Make sure you take a look at his free stuff like Leak Test, Unplug-N-Pray, Xpdite and the two socket locks (go to the free stuff section). Also they have some excellent newsgroups dealing with security (hardware & software), spam, and number of other topics. It's a great place to ask techie type questions. The level of people participating are from low level users through high level tech geeks and security pros. The information you get via these news groups is usually quick and correct. General tech problems are covered in the techtalk group. To get to the newsgroups you can either go through the website (it's at the bottom) where you can only read the newsgroups or add grc.com as a news server and subscribe to the groups you want. These are very active groups so there is a lot of message traffic. Also because of Steve's high profile he's often subject to DDOS attacks so there will be times when they aren't reachable or the service is slow. A number of times I have gotten the message that I haven't been able to reach the server in 60 seconds and should the newsreader quit or wait. I choose wait.
It's one of the best newsgroups sites on the Internet for people who have even the slightest interest in the subjects covered because of the quality of information provided.
