Bush has failed to make case for Iraq attack: academics

Minneapolis, Minnesota: More than 13,000 United States academics have signed an open letter opposing a US invasion of Iraq, arguing that President George Bush has failed to make his case for war.

In the letter, on the internet at www.noiraqattack.org, the scholars say Mr Bush has failed to demonstrate a credible threat from Iraq's President Saddam Hussein, failed to mobilise an international coalition in support of its aims, and even failed to persuade some of its own supporters of the merit of such a step.

"The decision to go to war should have the clear support of the US Congress, the Secretary of State, and the commanding officers of the armed forces," they argue.

"The likelihood of a high cost in lives of both combatants and non-combatants is too great given the weak justifications that have been offered for an invasion."

Mr Bush last month received overwhelming support for invading Iraq from Congress, but several senior members - including some Republicans - have expressed reservations about the idea.

The signatories went on to suggest that the mooted invasion risked increasing regional and global instability by raising tensions between Israel and the Palestinians, boosting the popular appeal of radical Islamist movements, and increasing anti-US sentiment, among other things.

"As educators and scholars we hope our message sparks informed discussion on- and off-campus that reaches to Washington DC," they conclude.

The letter was the idea of a geology lecturer at the University of Minnesota who passed it around to a few colleagues and got it published on September 17 in the university paper, the Minnesota Daily. The letter was later posted on the internet by someone at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and by Thursday contained nearly 30,000 signatures.

However, polls have consistently shown most Americans support Mr Bush in what he says is a disarmament effort, even to the point of launching a US attack to oust Saddam.

After six weeks of negotiations, the US and France on Thursday appeared on the brink of agreement on a United Nations resolution that would allow weapons inspectors to test Iraq's co-operation before any possible military action.

But diplomats said differences were still crucial enough for the Bush Administration to postpone calls for a vote until after Tuesday's congressional elections or run the risk of failure.

France's resistance to a provision in the US-British draft resolution that could trigger an attack on Iraq if it foils UN weapons inspectors is the biggest hurdle to an agreement, a US official said.

Along with the US and Britain, France, Russia and China have veto power on the 15-member Security Council.

The US and Britain want to threaten Iraq with "serious consequences" if it does not cooperate with inspectors.

The Secretary of State, Colin Powell, said the US was agreeable to holding talks in the Security Council immediately after inspectors met resistance.

But at any point along the way Mr Bush retained the authority to use force against Iraq, Mr Powell said.

"There is nothing that we would propose in this resolution or we would find acceptable in a resolution that would handcuff the President of the United States in doing what he feels he must do."

Iraq, which denies hiding weapons of mass destruction, said the "aggressive resolution distorts facts, imposes oppressive and impossible conditions and is a declaration of an imperialist war against Iraq".

It has agreed to allow arms inspectors to return after a four-year absence, and said it would give them unfettered access to suspected weapons sites. But the US has asked the inspectors to stay put while it seeks a tougher mandate.

Too bad that MIT now trains Islamic terrorists for their future attacks on the USA.

Too bad that some at MIT ignore the truth including the following:

murder of children, once at play.

Where were all of these academics when Clinton invaded Bosnia? Oh, that's right. It didn't matter. A democrat was in office.

educators and scholars MY A--

What do you expect from a bunch of Vietcong Sympathisers. Nothing has changed in the Great American, intellectual, terror, training camps. They ran then and now they're teaching others how to run. They all should be investigated for what they teach. What a disgrace.

The scholars have failed to demonstrate a credible reason for their existance.

There isn't a current dataset which would convince these liberal swine that Iraq merits an attack. It will be only after some significant number of academicians, and their families, are dead in an Iraqi sponsored attack that they will be persuaded otherwise. Not all will be persuaded even then.

There is a current thread which states that German investigators have tied Iraq and Mohammed Atta/Bin Laden to the anthrax attacks in the U. S. This wouldn't interest the academics because they gave up critical thinking for kneejerk liberalism decades ago.

This is one more proof, if any be needed, that one of the "fronts" in the War on Inlamo-fascism is in the ivy-covered halls of American universities. These are people who receive our tax dollars, as they lie to our children in the guise of "teaching" them.

Most likely, the "morons" who listed themselves as professors in support of the"Pro-Saddam" Rally on the Mall in Washington a week ago, are among the organizers of this effort. We need to fight on this "front" as surely as on any other.

I took on this subject in my speech for Free Republic at our Patriots Rally II. I also took it on in my seventh book. See second lilnk, below.

And these are only the ones that can write their names. Sad to think that as little as two years ago this list would have been given to the IRS for audits, the INS to check on visas, and Clinton's hit squad for target practice. Now that these a$$holes feel the trip to total socialism has derailled, thanks to Bush steeling the election, they can offer aid and comfort to the enemy. They are all too quick to hate the only country that would allow them to be a$$holes and still alive.

Here's a grain of salt to be taken with anything out of the mouth of an academic:
A defintion of Academic: - very learned but inexperienced in practical matters or relating to literary or artistic rather than technical or professional studies. Theoretical: having no practical or useful significance.

How many of these people lost anyone on 9/11? How many of them were on the idiot shoe bomber's plane? How many had family killed when that piece of shiite killed the people in LA at the El Al counter? How many were there when the "detainees" were debriefed? I could go on but; you get my drift.
As an "academic" myself I am embarrased by these phoney people.

More than 13,000 United States garbage men have signed an open letter opposing a US invasion of Iraq, arguing that President George Bush has failed to make his case for war

Why do academics think that their opinion is of any more importance than those of other professions? It usually is not born of experience, nor of skill, only of learning that many have come from inaccurate and biased teachers/literature.

Garbage men have to live with their decisions, learn to adapt to situations that may not be ideal, have real life experience, call people on BS and more important have other people tell them when they are full of it.

Many of these academics just apply for a grant and wrap their BS up in a paper.

I would be far less likely to dismiss a letter signed by real working Americans.
