Bush and Jimmy Carter are of the same cloth. It amazes me that people refuse to see it.

I guess I already know that, but just have a hard time since I like him so much. And see such great potential for him and our country, if he would only be a realist, I guess you could say.

Of 1 billion muslims on a small fraction of a fraction of a percentage are violent or support violence. Christianity was also once (mis)used for political ends in a violent manner and, on occassion still is.

Right now most Muslims live in repressive societies with no political outlet outside of the mosque. Give them a voice and they will soon abandon beg to moderate the religion. Look at what is happening in Iran.

Just to prove my point, I've tried to find a few bible passages in which God is or advocates extreme violence against non-believers. This should not be taken as a negative toward christianity, just an example of how politicans can pervert the word of God to incite people to do things that are contrary to the true intentions of the religion.

“If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods . . . thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people . . . If thou shalt hear . . . Certain men . . . have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods . . . Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants ofthat city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword” (Deuteronomy13:6-15).

“So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make (them) prisoners, and afterwards either set them free as a favor or let them ransom (themselves) until the war terminates” (Koran 47:4). “And when the Lord thy God hath delivered [a city] into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: But the women, and the little ones . . . shalt thou take unto thyself . . . But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth”(Deuteronomy 20:13-16).

“And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both males, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men who were before the house. And he said unto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go you forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city” (Ezekiel 9:5-7).

[W]hen the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance of them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord . . . (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).

Of course, I couldn't find as many examples for the bible as you did for the Koran, so maybe you win.

It must amaze you that people do not agree with you 100% of the time with your silly notions.

Look up the word hubris, you will probably see your picture.

Socialism isn't charity.

And in case you're not clear, stealing our money for forced redistribution to Mexico is socialism.

I'm sorry. I truly am.

But the Bushs were not raised with reality. They have existed in an insulated artificial atmosphere which required little of them but to maintain family and class social presence and receive gifts from the well-connected. That atmosphere builds pleasantness, but it doesn't build grit and realism necessary to be president.

Oh great...

Here come the knuckle dragging, racist Muslim haters again...

It's been so nice enjoying our victory without them over the past few days.

Thank you.

And let me further add, it's forced servitude of the American people to the deficiencies, corruption, and irresponsibilities of other nations and cultures.

"In driving democratization, good governance, and broader adoption of acceptable civil values abroad, aid is the carrot... "

I guess you really believe this. To those of us who have heard it time and again over the past thirty plus years, it just sounds like some more Madison Avenue word salad designed to foozle the unlettered into feeling good when their money is taken from them and then thrown into third world black hole economies, where people have to bow and scrape for what's theirs by right. Giving tyrannical clowns yet another umpteen billion dollars will not impede this.

You make a well reasoned response.
I can't speak for the many Protestant denominations, but as a Catholic, The Old Testament is looked upon more of as a history rather than a code of conduct.  Unfortunately the examples drawn from Deuteronomy and Ezekiel would fall under this.
Actually, the excerpt from 2 Thessalonians is what I see as the major difference between Christianity and isalm:
[W]hen the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance of them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord . . . (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
Here, The Gospels are clearly not encouraging followers to rein vengence upon those who do not believe, vengence is The Lord's.  In the many koranic passages I listed (and in countless others) followers are encouraged to seek vengence.
Occasionally, I'll come across the arguement that Northern Ireland (for example) has been wracked by violence in the name of Christianity.  However, I think both the IRA and the UDL would be hard pressed to find a passage from The Gospels that say "Find he who does not worship My Father in a manner consistent with your practices and kill him".

Your point is an interesting one concerning Iran, but since Iran is currently ruled under islamic law, it remains a theortetical example.  Indeed, most muslims do live under repressive societies, but they are repressive societies based on islamic law.

Of course, I couldn't find as many examples for the bible as you did for the Koran, so maybe you win.
It's not really about winning or loosing, in the free exchange of ideas, we both win!  Thanks again for your well reasoned response and welcome to FR!  Hope to see you around the boards again!

It's not unfortunate that they voted republican. It's unfortunate that they have become significant US voting block.

I never think it's unfortunate when a group of American citizens becomes a significant Republican voting bloc.

Ramadan and Bush

Revelation 11
7 When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them...
10 And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

Jeremiah 50:43
"The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands grow feeble;
Anguish has taken hold of him,
Pangs as of a woman in childbirth.

That's, er, the 43rd king of the 50 states of Babylon...

Pangs as of a woman in childbirth...
