>>All the support I've seen spoken for Lott is based on pure partisan politics. Could some of the conservatives here give a reason to support his remaining as
leader based on something other than the R after his name, I can't come up with any.<<

I strongly disagree with you.

While I hate to see him leave the leadership over this, I weigh that against the fact that this is a self-inflicted wound.

It's worse than a diaster, it's a blunder. A rookie blunder at that.

I echo the sentiment of National Review that is posted here somewhere: How can I support Neville (I-have-an-iron-clad-agreement-with-President-Clinton) Lott now when I never have supported him before? His being (possibly wrongly. I dunno) accused of being a bigot is not sufficient reason for me to start supporting him now.

Soory Reg, luv ya but I gotta disgree with you.

If Bush keeps this guy as a lightning-rod and the voice of Republicans in the Senate, he is a fool.

George W. Bush is no fool.

Are we a bunch of hypocrites and self interested people?

Most here at FR want Lott to resign from his ML position but will not take the moral stand that he should be removed from any government position including his senate seat.

You cannot say he was wrong in his statements and must resign as ML and then turn around and say we must keep him in the senate to protect our majority. That is bogus and smacks of agenda, if not hypocrisy. Either he is evil and must be removed or he was not clear and it should be forgotten. You cannot have it both ways.

As David Frum said yesterday on Na. Review Online, if Lott stays as Majority Leader, it will mean even more spineless cow-towing to the Democrats in the Senate.

Exactly. They'll blackmail the hell out of him (although I think they've been blackmailing him for a long time already.)

Thanks for providing this thread.

Small minds sieze on an opportunity to push selfish agendas. The time for infighting is not the present.

The enemy in the cultural war is to be found behind the shrill black voices who know they are losing control of their people.

Young educated blacks can't be dragged and dropped in the voting place with $3 payment for their vote.

Fear is driving the issue. We must not abandon the field while winning the battle.

I must disagree. I thought his comments were wrong. I also can't stand Lott's spineless pork-barreling moderateness. He should definately resign a majority leader.

As a position of national importance Majority Leader is my business, but his role as a Senator is strictly up to the people of Mississippi.

You can be a good senator without necessarily having to be a great leader. Lott may be a good senator, but he is a bad leader.

What garbage! You don't win by giving up.

How do you feel about Iraq? Should we kiss Saddam's clymer as well?

By the way, winning is necessary to stay in power.

"That is bogus and smacks of agenda, if not hypocrisy."

So what?

In case you haven't noticed, the 'Craps have always brought a gun to a knife fight. If we don't start doing them back, we're never going to get anywhere in our attempts to reverse the liberal ratchet.

Yeah whatever

You could still be calling for his resignation form the senate. A racist cannot be member of the senate and anyone with a moral fiber should set aside their desire for power and call for his complete removal from the senate.

Blood on the floor is the only way. Turning the other cheek will only get us another and harder smack.

You've got to be kidding. This has nothing to do with Dems' orchestration. He is not decent enough to be MY majority leader, and I am shocked at FReepers who think he's OK as theirs.

I, for one, am not just paying LIP SERVICE to the Republican dream of a colorblind meritocracy in these glorious United States. I really MEAN IT.

Since the weekend, I have struggled to come up with any way in heck that a non-racist could say the words Lott said at the party. It simply would not come out, wouldn't even be thought, most especially into a mike with CSPAN's cameras rolling . And for gosh sakes, he is supposed to be the Senate Majority Leader, at that. Unpardonable, IMHO. He is either too racist or (and I am being generous here) too stupid to be our leader.

Man, you got that wrong. A bumbling fool should not be the voice of the party, but he can still cast a vote. Big difference. I accept him at his word (I guess), but that does not excuse ALL of his rookie mistakes. He is not a ML but just a vote-casting-Senate-pawn.

So if the people of Louisiana legally voted David Duke to be their Senator, you wouldn't let him take office?
