Actually it might be best for the Republicans if Lott resigns as Majority Leader, and somehow it's made to look like Sharpton had a big say in the matter (maybe Lott could meet with Sharpton for "spiritual counseling" then resign!)

Hitler lost an Army at Stalingrad because he refused to give an inch. The GOP is faced in the same situation now. The Russians learned to cede ground for strategic regions but the Fuhrer could never bring himself to do so and it was disastrous time and again. It doesn't matter what motivates the Dems or how hypocritical they are what matters is public perception and Lott is a PR disaster if he stays in a leadership roll. I am not a big Bush fan but I think that he and Rove understand the situation and will take action, could be wrong but I give the men that much - they're smarter and more determined than the rest of the GOP dolts.

Trent Lott is an arse. I couldn't stand him a week ago and I don't like him now. The Lotts, Byrds, Thumonds etc have all got to go. I believe that a tiger never really changes his/her stripes. I think Lott's latest statements shows just how arrogant and stupid he really is. I mean what kind of a bumbling fool makes that sort of statement. The Republican party has made a lot of headway into the reversing of the massive brainwashing black Americans have gone through via the Dem black leaders. Leaders like Lott are not helping the cause. Lott is a weak Maj Leader who is constantly making mistakes. How is the Rep party supposed to move forward if we are always having to babysit nimrods like Lott. Sorry for the rant but I am just pissed.

The Dems want Lott to stay as Majority Leader, because now they REALLY have him around their filthy little finger. As David Frum said yesterday on Na. Review Online, if Lott stays as Majority Leader, it will mean even more spineless cow-towing to the Democrats in the Senate. The GOP won a majority. We can ill afford to have a leader who has been whipped into line by the Democrats. We should consider the storm Lott has created, and the Democrats have encouraged, as a favor, and dump him.

The point of my previous post is that Jesse Jackson and all the other racebaiters WANT a neutered Trent Lott to remain as Majority Leader. They don't want him to leave. They want him around to always kick with their racebaiting boot when they have a need to. Lott never had a spine; now he has no balls. That's the kind of Republican Leader the Dems want.

Aside from that, I vote for Lott to step down from his position as Majority Leader. He expressed sympathy for segregation. The Republian Party is not the party of segregation. Since Lott has set himself up as a lightening rod and the darling of the residue of segregationist sentiment in this nation, he should NOT be the symbol of leadership for the Republican Party in the Senate.

Not those kind of tigers. I don't like moron tigers. All I'm asking for is some intelligence. In the old days you could just blurt out anything you wanted. That don't fly today. And these guys still think they can just keep saying whatever they want just like in 'the good old day'. Just like the Dem party, we need new blood also. Tactically this is "a Lott problem" but strategically it has great possibilities that Bush and Rove could exploit.
We'll see in Lott's remarks today what they've decided to do.
I'll support whatever they decide but I admit I hope they've taken the strategic view and not the tactical. I'm sick of the Dems' simplistic personal attacks maneuvers succeeding.

There are in actuality only three possible choices for Trent Lott:

1) Remain at his post and fight it out.

2) Resign his Majority Leadership and remain in the Senate, likely as a committee chairman.

3) Resign from the Senate in a fit of personal pride and pique.

If he does number one, the Republican Party, the President of the United States, and by extension the country, will be irretrievably harmed. He is beyond damaged goods...in that position he is worthless as a leader and is in fact an extreme liability.

If he does number two, he will remain a member of the world's most exclusive Club, with all the perks that entails; he will be gauranteed reelection for as long as he cares to stay because the people of MS are in all likelihood going to undergo an extreme backlash to what the left and the media did to 'their guy'; and last but not least, he will finally have what he never had from the beginning of this mess---cover and support form the rank and file of the GOP.

If he is stupid enough to do number three, he will be forever damned politically---hated by Republicans forever, and rightfully so. I have taken to referring to this course as suicide by immolation, because that is exactly what it would be, IMO.

I hope and pray that he is encouraged by Republican leadership in the next hours to do number two.

Sorry, couldn't agree with you less. The position of Lott's defenders seems to be that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Lott is being attacked by the Left for this. So, since the Left is my enemy, I should stand by Lott. Doesn't work like that. Lott's words were wrong. Words mean things. They are important.

If the people of Mississippi want him as their Senator, that's up to them. If they want to recall him, so be it. But I am fine with calling on other Republican leaders - including my 2 Republican Senators - to do what ever they can to make sure that Lott is not the leader of the Senate.

Long term, I think this issue is very helpful for the Right. We have another opportunity to forcefully inject a discussion of character in to the national dialogue. What is right? What is good conduct? It starts with Lott. It doesn't have to end there. Demands for impeccable character from our leaders can produce a whole new framework for discussions of such issues as personal responsibility. Who will benefit from such a national dialogue the most? Conservatives! WE are the party of personal responsibility.

The future of America is integrated. If conservatives want to be the party of that future, we should have no tolerance for bigots - or even those who make bigoted remarks - as our national spokesmen.

CAN'T JOIN YOU THAT MUCH.

1) I DO THINK ENTIRELY TOO MUCH time and energy have been spent on the Lott issue and on racism as a whole. We are talking about our survival as a people, a nation, a culture.

We are on the brink of a WWIII which will leave at least a third of the world population dead from war and natural disasters. This obsessive frenzy over a relative nonissue is idiotic, shameful and exceedingly useless in the over all scheme of things.

It is also a compulsive manipulation of the media by the left toward increasing their weakened power. They ought to be slapped down fiercely in every honorable way.

2) Given Lott's behavior during the impeachment fiasco of Billdo and Skullery, I don't think he deserves to lead a team of chicken coop cleaners or dog catchers unless TREASONOUS is part of their logo. Given his capitulations, kowtowing to Dasholl et al post 2,000 election, I'm not sure he deserves to show his face in public, much less the media.

3) The left needs to be shredded 12 times over for every hypocritical assault on Lott. Byrd needs to be lofted very high on the very high piles of his own pitiful turds 2 dozen times for every democrud comment about Lott. Byrd should lose sleep at night for fear the masses are going to run him out of DC and out of his home state and out of the country wearing tar and feathers and nothing else. As it is, God will likely be the only one making him pay for his exceedingly offensive and shameless hypocrisy. Thankfully, God will do a better job than the rest of us put togeher. I do wish He'd do it sooner than later. Sigh.
