Lost in all the furor is the strong possibility that he was right! But of course, we can't have him speaking politically incorrect truth, can we?

Thanks for all you have done for us in the past Chester.

Just what has Lott done for us in the past?

What do you mean by that? He was a segregationalist. It doesn't matter what else Strom ran for. You are only as good as your weakest link. That would not be good for America. Keeping down an entire race of people is not what America is all about. Geese Louise, I used to consider myself a pretty hardcore right winger, but some of you guys are making me look like a frigg'n hippy liberal.

If the next leader is a STRONG Conservative Republican, do you realize that the LIBERAL-LEANING Republicans will be wined and dined to pull a switch just like Jim Jeffords.

And do you realize that if Lott stays, these very same LIBERAL-LEANING Republicans will be even more likely to switch, stating their inability to remain in a party that has a "racist" SML?

I thought he should go, also. But this flap has transcended Lott and is now being used to tar everyone in the South and all pubs. So I now say let's support Lott, for now, and squash the racial rhetoric that has erupted. In time, Lott can be eased out of leadership, but for now, weather the storm. It is bigger than Lott.

In 1911 Truman (who was 27) wrote to his future wife, Bess: "I think one man is just as good as another so long as he's honest and decent and not a nigger or a Chinaman. Uncle Will [probably Wfiliam Yount, the brother of Truman's mother] says that the Lord made a white man from dust, a nigger from mud, then He threw up what was left and it came down a Chinaman."

Truman continued: "[I] am strongly of the opinion Negroes ought to be in Africa, yellow men in Asia and white men in Europe and America."

Hmmmm Truman v Thurm V Dewey....Looks like Dewey should have won........because Truman and Thurm were racist back in 1948 .........

You cannot say he was wrong in his statements and must resign as ML and then turn around and say we must keep him in the senate to protect our majority. That is bogus and smacks of agenda, if not hypocrisy.

I disagree. Lott as senator of Mississippi speaks for that state, not me. It is that state's business to deal with Trent Lott as they see fit. But Lott as Senate Majority Leader is a significant figure in my political party, and I do not want him to have such a leadership position in the party. Two different issues.

Being voted out because you are a bad leader and being forced to resign because of perceived bad statements are two different things.

What did he say? From what I've heard, he merely said that- had we elected Strom Thurmond to the presidency, we might not have had to suffer through all the problems of the past fifty years!

He's righ, though we probably would have had different and even more difficult problems, but we'll never know, will we? Like any good, waffling politician, he avoided making a definitive statement, leaving the interpretation of his comment wide open to whatever pet conjecture any media whore might have.

Trent Lott is a poor excuse for a Republican and should have been booted out of the party leadership long ago. But I still hate to see him deposed by this Liberal witch hunt. P.T. Barnum is supposed to have said something about suckers being born every minute. He also admonished the faithful to 'never give a sucker an even break.' To allow the Democrats to bring Lott down is tantamount to giving them a whole lot more than an 'even' break.

I disagree. The best thing about all of this is that the Democrats reaction even makes them more foolish in light of the fact that they have Senators Byrd and Hollings. It's like when they tried to hound Bush on Enron. They shut up real quick when the media revealed how many Rats also had ties to Enron.

If Lott steps down as ML, the winners are Bush and the GOP, the losers will be Lott and the 'Rats.

So we were just blowing smoke when we called for Clintons impeachment?

We cannot retreat from our standards just because the bad guy does.

Either Lott did something wrong or he did not.

Southern Heritage has been adopted as a winning Republican issue. If he steps down, the Dem's will neutralize the issue by immediately starting with the "Northeast Country Clubbers telling us what's okay to think."

His fellow senators voted him in as ML

If this was because of his failed leadership then why is everyone talking about his "racist" statements?

Are we allowing Lott to be lied about to satisfy our own agenda? That is wrong.

This is much more serious than any Republican vs. Democrat, "conservative vs. liberal" matter. This man is Senate majority leader of the United States.

http://www.ferris.edu/isar/Institut/CCC/crouch07.htm

If you have not familiarized yourself with the CCofC regarding this situation (you can google to find it), I suggest you do so--although they have given their site a bit of a housecleaning lately. (Wonder why?) I will tell you that it is a white supremacist organization. There is no doubt that this man and Bob Barr, who is also associated with the CCofC, are not worthy of your admiration--unless, of course, you share their views or admire their political pandering to such types.

This is somewhat common political knowledge, and it is surprising to see that it took years for some people to find out about it.

Registered, you have revealed the PRECISE nature of the situation. I applaud your insight. Lott is Majority Leader because he is about the only Republican senator who bridges the gap between the conservative and liberal wings of our own party in the senate. With a more hard-line conservative leader, McCain, Chaffee, Snowe, Specter, Collins and perhaps one or two others would see themselves as marginalized. This would drive some, if not all of them further toward the Dems. The Dems know this, and they know they can use Lott's stupidity to their advantage. It's a win-win for them, or so they think. I do believe they can overplay their hand.
