"States' Rights" has been used broadly and recognized broadly as a codeword for segregation--ever since, well, even before 1948.

Like this article, BTW? Thank Trent Lott for it. Without his blurt, this article wouldn't have been written--at least not at this critical point, and maybe not for a long time, while the bigot writer waited for another Republican to say something incriminating.

You can also thank Ol' Strom for polluting the term "States' Rights" to the point where the valid issues of federalism were blighted by the race card for the rest of the twentieth century, and apparently, the twenty-first as well.

RE: presidential ballots and electors

Not in West Virginia. I distinctly remember our ballot from 2000 and it listed:

(D) Al Gore, Tennessee
Joe Lieberman, Connecticut

(R) George Bush, Texas
Richard Cheney, Wyoming

Neither elector names nor process were mentioned here in the Mountain State.
