Some years ago, "National Lampoon" ran an article, complete with photos, titled "Dog Fishing."
One photo showed a pickup truck with a fighting chair mounted in the trucks bed and an angler trolling a hot dog.
That aside: I know Prarie dogs are pests--but I do remember one I saw in a pet shop, and I vowed that one day I would have a prarie dog as a pet.
Still, I like horses but will eat horsemeat. How do prarie dogs taste?
To: fivetoes
Wouldn't it be more entertaining to do the whack-a-mole method?
To: fivetoes
Thats just too funny

Don't these rodents carry the plague? Yes, they can. It is the number one reason for fishing for prairie dogs. Here it is from the web site.
Now all patriotic Americans can do their part to help stop terrorism. These cute little rodents are known to be carriers of the bubonic plague, the Black Death. This plague was responsible for the deaths of over twenty five million people a few short centuries ago. Imagine if a terror group found a way to extract the bacterium named Yersinia pestis from a prairie dog? We would no longer be concerning ourselves with the likes of anthrax or even chronic wasting disease.

I thought they tasted somewhere between Eagle and Spotted Owl ... That depends, if you deep fry the birds and then the dogs, they will sort of taste like them. It is the same reason that french fries tasts like chicken at McDonalds.

I absoulately hate prairie dogs. Yes fivetoes, I'm game! I'll bring a couple of big musky rods loaded up with 35 lb. braided dacron. Hell, lets have a long cast contest and see who can pitch a dog the farthest!
Hey PETA, suck on that one for a while.

Yes, we have a different culture out here. It does not take much for us to have a little fun. It will even be more fun if we have some prairie dog saviors come out and try to stop us.

Thanks guys!
To: fivetoes
There will be containers labeled for the local PETA folks too.
After they are shipped, tournament officials will be waiting outside of the recipient's home with video cameras to ensure that the friendly, flea infested, disease carrying rodents are properly cared for by those who have pledged to save and care for them. That should be interesting, so say Mr. Obvious.

Just a little info. on prairie dogs in Colorado. I have a degree in Wildlife Biology and will share some facts with you all.
Colorado has abour 250,000 acres of prairie dogs. for every acre we have wiped outin the past, the dogs have taken over another acre. They cannot be controlled and breed like crazy. They are carriers of fleas that carry the plague. EVERY year we have cases of the plague here due to contact with prairie dogs.
We have tried avery way in the world to get rid of them. Poison, bulldozers, hunting, all have failed to reduce their numbers. Fishing sounds like something good to try.
If you were a landowner paying property taxes on acres and acres of worthless prairie dog towns you might think differently. If you want a few dogs come on out with your PETA buddies and rescue a few.

Let me know how the goose hunting goes. I have a couple of weeks off and may want to bring a few down. Potluck dinner of goose n dogs. Sounds like a German dish. Maybe we can add some cabbage and then add it to the prairie dog recipe page.

It is the same reason that french fries tasts like chicken at McDonalds. That's because they're both really tofu. This is a little known fact that's been covered up at the highest levels of government and industry.

Haven't heard from her in a long time. I watched a guy fish dogs one time took his 8.5 foot orvis and tied a nice bright fly on the end when the dog picked it up he set the hook and had a good time.
To: riverrunner
I was thinking about using a great big ol treble hook and doing some snagging.

Maybe she's out manatee gigging.
Never fished for dowgs but there's nothin' quite like hookin' into a Mallard drake on light fly tackle. There's somethin' extra speshul 'bout reelin' yer prey in from the sky. Makes ya feel like part of the whole universe.
To: TigersEye
My post if really for five toes, and his slow gun.If you will quit using that 270 on Dogs and get a real varmint gun ( 220 Swift) you will see the difference. The 220 Swift is the Tomahawk Missle of the Hand Loaders..
To: fivetoes
I'll bring my Rodex 4000 and xtra propane and O2
Do you give prizes for the highest launch?

Sounds like a fast end to a problem, I only have one Browning Product. a 9mm High Power, but it sure is a pleasure to shoot...

Do you have the proper equipment to measure PDA (prairie dog altitude)?

Hey, enjoy!
I saw your post and remembered this game from a few years back.
To: zcat
I'm sure shooting p-dogs is cool but its a tough call as to it beating out dog-fishing. There's nothing like cruising past a nicely shaded park in Hartford or Boston, chair secured in the bed of your favorite pickup truck, wind whistling in your hair ....
You lean back and hurl that small pug with a 2.5 oz weight and steel leader, and successfully drop it over the parked cars and practically in the mouth of that standard poodle.
The fun begins ! You play it between the cars, work it back out from under the shrubs where it tried to dig in ....and crank that poodle back and forth till its begging for the live keeper tank.
Naw, shooting prarie dogs IS cool but heck one can go to any Micky-D's and shoot seagulls or toss alka-seltzer tabs to the gulls and try to drop them like skeets before they burst... Life is just too good to believe !

We had a lively somewhat humorous discussion Saturday evening and one conversation went off to guiding the harnessed doggies across a busy four lane highway for extra points.
For a good time with friends try to come up with some fair rules for this new sport. Do it over a couple of beers at your favorite watering hole. Extra points if the discussion is in a city like Boulder or Berkely. LOL
