...said Jennifer Allen, co-director of the Tucson-based Border Action Network. "They (illegal immigrants) have civil rights and human rights that take precedence over defending the country."

I wonder if Allen would apply this same reasoning if the U.S. were to be invaded by a foreign army.

I find them to be seekers of the truth.

I find them to be an irresponsible source of hysterical quasi-"journalism."

FreeRepublic links to them on the homepage.

FreeRepublic also links to the Washington Post and Salon on the homepage. And just like them, I take anything published on Sierra Times with a big grain of salt.

Freepers have published articles over there; Carry_Okie, nunyabidness are two that come to mind.

Good for them. I just hope the check didn't bounce.

Anyhow, what's are your thoughts on this particular article, please, if we are done dancing around the topic.

Information about the so-called "Border Action Network" of the type so breathlessly reported in the Sierra Times article has been discussed, in great detail, in other FreeRepublic threads already.

Bottom line: Just like Sierra Times, the "Border Action Network" has major credibility problems. I wouldn't trust either as far as I could throw them.

Yes, we've discussed the Border Action Network, but they went by a different name until they were asked to this report for Grijalva.

What hasn't been discussed is the source of their funding and the funding of Coalicion de Derechos Humanos which is indentified in the following paragraph of this fact filled article, unless you have a link to a thread to proove me wrong.

While Border Action Network gets a major portion of its funding from the Norman Foundation, dedicated in its own words to countering right-wingers, the common denominator for both BAN and Coalicion de Derechos Humanos is Resist, Inc. and a raunchier group of Democratic Socialists would be darned hard to find!

All too easy. Check out Posts 27, 28, 32, and others of this thread.

I think you two are like the famous railroad cartoon, where one rail meets and the other two don't...

I made comment 32 on the other thread...we have talked about the funding and political persuasion of these groups on FR...

But I haven't seen anything even approaching main stream media talk about their funding and politics.

I have seen 2 different Tucson TV News anchors fawn over Isabel Garcia and her ilk. It turns my stomach that she is an official with the Pima County Public Defender's Office.

Most Freepers know how to use a search engine, which would make it painfully obvious that the grandiloquently titled "Resist Inc." creates a grand total of a whopping three hits on Google. Oh yes, they have their own web site too. If you and/or Sierra Times wish to try to make a case that Resist Inc. is providing a significant amount of funding for BAN, then please do so.

I suspect that Resist Inc. hands out what amounts to little more than cabfare to its grantees and client agencies. If they do, hey its a free Internet.

Interesting analogy, especially since the railroad tracks around here have only two rails. You must be a city boy ;)

I look on the "conversation" between madfly and myself like the Roadrunner and the Coyote. (meep meep)

Just curious - do you have an estimate of how much Resist Inc. is really handing out? Are we talking cabfare here or are we talking big green?

Personally, I've never heard of Resist. I just did the Google search and looked at their home page. Looks kinda like a small cadre of people that link to other 'progressive' organizations.

I'm into fund-raising and giving away grants on a small scale, but my knowledge is limited.

On the other hand, I've been watching the Derechos Humanos activities as they've been reported on, and I'm not happy with what they're trying to do. That they wish to create a separate Mexican state out of CA, AZ, NM, and TX doesn't surprise me in the least. I'm just hoping people down here can see that coming...

That was my impression as well. Hardly the type of situation where a deep-pockets organization like the so-called Pew "Charitable" Trust was found to be making substantial grants to BAN or the other ratbag organizations mentioned in the article.

Which was pretty much the gist of my original contention about Sierra Times - they are experts at trying to build a mountain out of what is probably the smallest molehill on the prairie. Others in this thread insisted on going down rabbit trails about them, so I had to oblige them.

I'm into fund-raising and giving away grants on a small scale, but my knowledge is limited.

Same here. But I think I can state with some confidence that Resist Inc. is not a major player in the grant biz. A website does not a major political presence make.

On the other hand, I've been watching the Derechos Humanos activities as they've been reported on, and I'm not happy with what they're trying to do.

Same here. Last time I checked, the "homeland" extended as far south as California, Texas, Arizona, etc. Where is the "homeland security" for these states?

Ahhh, back to the crux of the matter! Homeland Security for these states resides in the formation of citizens' groups that patrol and protect property from trespassers and such.

Thanks for this important post. Yep, as Deep Throat said to Woodward and Bernstein in the Watergate investigation, "Follow the money." Words and names can tell part of the truth of any situation, but the money flow always tells the truth.

Good work by her in digging this up. Good work by you in posting it.

In my opinion, citizen involvement and vigilance is indeed an important part of homeland security. But it is not the only thing that needs to be done - government needs to perform one of its limited duties (in a sane society anyway) and "defend the homeland" against the miscreants coming over the borders.

"Fortress America" and political correctness no, tough immigration policies and sufficient manpower and resources to back them up, yes.

What "money flow" are you referring to? These "Resist Inc" birds apparently scraped enough together from under seat cushions to pay for a slick web site, but that's about all I've heard about or seen from them.

I'd be a bit more worried about Resist Inc's involvement if it could be proven that their funding largesse amounted to more than the cost of a burger and fries.

What the author is pointing out by mentioning Resist Inc. is not just their funding, however minimal, but more importantly, the long list of Democratic/Socialist groups on their grant list that includes Coalicion de Derechos Humanos.

On the Resist Inc. website, here is the description of SWARM. I can see why this group wouldn't want this description to pop up when handing over a request to Government to investigate the Citizen Patrols. This would also explain their name change to Border Action Network. Wouldn't look so good to be against our armed forces.

http://resistinc.org/

Southwest Alliance to Resist Militarization (SWARM) (Tucson, AZ) $2,000
swarmtucson@hotmail.com
Funding to support the campaign to Stop Joint Task Force 6,
which utilizes Army, Navy, Air Force,
Marine and National Guard personnel to
"fight the war on drugs" within the United States .

Coalicion de Derechos Humanos/Arizona Border Rights Project (Tucson, AZ)
(Salzman Memorial Fund Grant)
$2,000 for program addressing the militarization of the US/Mexican border, particularly the vigilante style actions of ranchers with large land holdings.

NORMAN FOUNDATION

Now here we find things all cleaned up. New name, new funding, new description, to go along with their scathing report full of lies, called
Hate or Heroism
Vigilantes on the Arizona-Mexico Border
December 2002

http://www.normanfdn.org/grants2002.html

Border Action Network $20,000.00
Tucson, AZ
Support of education activities on the impact of growing militarization of the US-Mexico border.

I'd be a bit more worried about Resist Inc's involvement if it could be proven that their funding largesse amounted to more than the cost of a burger and fries.

So whether they are getting enough funds to reserve a table at the Ritz or just barely enough for a Denny's combo, it's who they are dining with, or should I say in bed with, that should make one concerned.

Lol, we have to be careful when using the word "Coyote" on these threads, as we found out yesterday. :)
