Sen. Frist aids victims at South Florida wreck scene

By BRIAN BANDELL
Associated Press Writer

Incoming Senate majority leader Bill Frist, a surgeon, helped authorities tend to six victims of a rollover accident on a Florida highway New Year's Day, earning praise from paramedics for stabilizing some of the four survivors.

Frist, R-Tenn., a full time heart and lung surgeon before joining the Senate eight years ago, replaced Trent Lott, R-Miss., who stepped down as majority leader in December after making a racist comment.

An Isuzu Rodeo with six people aboard was heading west on Alligator Alley when it rolled over 3 to 4 miles west of the toll plaza in Broward County at 3:51 p.m., Broward Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief Todd Leduc said.

All six, including three children, were thrown out as the vehicle rolled. A 10-year-old boy died on the scene; another passenger died later at a hospital.

Frist was driving east on the highway, the Everglades portion of Interstate 75, heading to a family vacation home in Fort Lauderdale with his two sons when he came across the accident, which had just occurred.

He was working with the victims when rescue officials arrived. He told them of the conditions of the victims and assisted paramedics for about 30 minutes until the victims were sent to area hospitals.

"Sen. Frist greatly assisted Broward County Fire Rescue. The Senate majority leader was really instrumental in helping us treat the victims," Leduc said. "We'd like to get in contact with him and recognize him for his efforts."

The other four victims were transported to Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale and Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Leduc said. A 12-year-old was in critical condition. Authorities didn't release their identities.

"As a doctor his first instinct was too help these individuals," said Nick Smith, Frist's communications director. "His heart goes out to the family involved in this horrible tragedy."

You won't hear from Jesse Jackass unless it was a black family -- he doesn't bother with whites.

You bet you all do. Bless your hearts. (Of course if you don't leave your name, you can keep making your liability insurance payments.)

Reminds me of the time a Massachusetts senator gave assistance at the scene of an auto accident. Woops, never mind.

Ohhhhh he gave the mouth to mouth BEFORE the accident...

Frist arrived in Boston in 1974 to attend Harvard Medical School. Frist's ambition was to perform heart and lung transplants, a field then still in its infancy, and he assumed he would spend his life in Massachusetts.

Frist came to Harvard, he wrote, "starry-eyed and amazed" at being part of the "cream of the crop." But, he continued, "somewhere in the middle of it all, exhausted by years of no sleep and high anxiety, doubting every opinion I ever held, questioning every notion about myself that ever kept me going, I realized that instead of molding doctors, medical school was in the business of stripping human beings of everything but the raw, almost insane, ambition you must have simply to get through."

Frist is an animal lover who said his decision to become a doctor was clinched when he helped heal a friend's dog. But Frist now found himself forced to kill animals during medical research. And his new dilemma was finding enough animals to kill.

Soon, he began lying to obtain more animals. He went to the animal shelters around Boston and promised he would care for the cats as pets. Then he killed them during experiments. "It was a heinous and dishonest thing to do," Frist wrote. "I was going a little crazy."

>"As a doctor his first instinct was too help these individuals,"

And as a doctor his second instinct is that if anything goes wrong, even if it is not his fault he could be the deep pocket who gets sued.

As a politician, he can set aside the above concerns and think about how this will take the heat off the "cat controversy."  You are correct.

I'm sure Patty Murray would have done the same thing.

Oh, wait, she would have waited for Osama to help. Never mind.

Oh, sure he does. He sees them then spits on their burgers while he's preparing them. Now, THAT's caring the Jesse way!!

"Any Medical person that fails to stop is less that human...I have stopped several times at accidents..and I have been joined by Docs that do not give their name..they just treat and go."

As a young man I traveled many summers crisscrossing the country with my grandfather, an owner-operator, who hauled "Special Products" in an 18 wheeler.

Having witnessed and stopped at many accidents I can concur with your experience concerning MDs, always ready to help without need for praise.

There were also times when my first-aid training, given to me by my mother a RN, was the only medical help available...

I still have nightmares about one crash east of Dallas-Fort Worth where I watched a man go into shock and die...

This is the worst the liberal press can come up with to attack Frist.

Frist admitted he made a terrible mistake and apologized years ago. He even went further, lobbying to change such common practices in medical schools.

On the other hand, you know that Republicans can never be forgiven about past sins, especially if these sins were committed 28 years ago.

I am totally impressed with this man.

I know of doctors that would not want to get involved due to the fear of lawsuits. Looks like he is at heart a real doctor.

He's beginning to sound like Superman.

No. He's just beginning to sound like a great human being. One that the DemocRATs will attack at their own peril.

Just compare him with any DemocRAT Senator. Any of them. Could any of them qualify to wash his scrubs? I don't think so.

"forgiven about past sins"

I don't think using cats to save humans is really a sin?

Yeah, OR not get involved b/c you don't know what contagious and potentially deadly illnesses (AIDS, Hep C, etc) anyone at the scene could be carrying. I felt bad about the 10 year old boy, and I am sure that was something hard for Dr. Frist to deal with.
