Peggy Noonan: A Tough Roe
Opinion Journal ^ | 01/20/03 | Peggy Noonan

It is now 30 years since the Supreme Court, in its Roe v. Wade vision, blew down the barriers to abortion on demand, using as the essential rationale a constitutional right of privacy that the court had discovered less than eight years earlier. Since 1973 roughly 40 million abortions--that seems to be the generally accepted number--have been performed in America, and 40 million children banished from life.

The rats might as well abandon their traditional party symbol. The Donkey is far too noble a beast to accurately represent them. of course, there would be the problem of finding a replacement symbol, but not to worry. I have a modest suggestion.

The new Democrat Party symbol should be a graphic of a dirty old man in a sticky trenchcoat.

Basic hygiene. Maybe the Greens can share their shtick with the Democrats.

Wake up GOP and Christians!

Overturning Roe v. Wade is not the correct tact to defeating abortion. Any legislation should be aimed at gaining even-handed counseling for those women and men considering abortion. This counseling would make the woman and the prospective father aware of the emotional and physical consequences of abortion as well as alternatives. An abortion doctor has an obvious conflict of interest and this would balance this with alternatives such as adoption and information regarding the scientifically established emotional and physical ramifications of abortion. This is the best tact against abortion. It is unassailable by pro-choice groups. While the true victim is the unborn child, such an approach addresses the pro-choice established victim- the woman. Changing hearts is key to victory against abortion and such a law can help change hearts without arousing a severe backlash from the pro-choice groups. Roe v. Wade will become superfluous with this type of approach.

Nonsense. Overturning Roe v. Wade would simply hand the issue back to the states, where the people through their elected representatives could try out different approaches. It is not only the "correct" tack, it is an absolutely essential tack. Nothing would do more to make your suggestions workable and effective.

Don't you know them by now? Some organization could offer every pregnant woman in America a million dollars to carry to term and adopt out her child rather than abort and the feminists would say that they were no better than NAZIs in their blatant attempt to oppress womyn.

...I hope the photos help the innocent who are misled by the medical people. I used to work in a pro-life counseling center. We showed videos to women while they waited for their test. (Good tests used to take a long time.) Many women and girls told me that they never realized how much was already happening inside them. For that reason the new technology will be a blessing. But I have little hope for the thousands of teachers, nurses, doctors, social workers, and government officials who have hearts harder than flint about the unborn.

We lose this fight no matter what when we let the left use the words choice or choose: they only want to choose to have an abortion and end a life. They don't want us to choose to own firearms. They don't want us to choose where our kids go to school. They don't want to us to choose how we spend our money instead of the gov't. When these Dem candidates are running for president and they talk about "a woman's right to choose", they have to clarify "to kill a baby" or "to have an abortion". By automatically giving them the understanding that we know they mean abortion, puts us in the loss column.

I think Peggy missed a point that I expected in a piece about the effect of abortion on the Rat party. Who's out there having abortions-liberal women, or conservative ones? By killing off potential Democrat voters, abortion eviscerates the future of this evil party.

I have said this before but will repeat it: Everyone, in discussing late term abortion, there is one more gruesome fact never discussed: three percent of natural births are breech (feet first), 100 percent of late term abortions are breech. How come? Because FIRST the abortionist has to reach in and twist the baby feet first. Why? Because if the head is born the child cannot be legally murdered. If he is hanging out with his head still unborn he can be "aborted." The general public does not know this. Please, call your local talk shows!!!!!

As I said in my first post "Roe v. Wade will become superfluous with this type of approach." There's already a law against abortion- it's called murder. We just have to change the public's perception and the truth is the best way to do that. The truth is on our side.

What is it? It is a child, not an tissue mass. The counseling I suggested will reveal that truth and hearts will change.

We don't disagree. We have to make the left use the word abortion when stating their principles and platform. We have to say we're the pro-choice folks, we're pro-choice with regard to tax cuts, school choice and gun rights. They can't get away with saying they're pro-choice, they must be forced to say "we support the right to abortion" etc. Doing this will awaken a lot of people to the horror that abortion is and like you said< will hopefully change hearts and minds.

I hate to say it, but many attempts have been made by various state legislatures over the years at introducing laws to require just what you advocate, informed choice. Unfortunately, in the spirit of Roe vs. Wade, every one of these laws have been struck down by the Supreme Court as being "unconstitutional." Without overturning Roe vs. Wade, true informed consent laws may be impossible.

Personally, I am not at all for making abortion illegal. I am for full informed consent, mandatory pre-abortion sonograms, and for showing the post-abortive mothers their "products of conception." Such measures would, I believe, cause a drastic drop in the number of birth-control abortions.

The rats might as well abandon their traditional party symbol. The Donkey is far too noble a beast to accurately represent them.

In keeping with the animal images created by political cartoonist Thomas Nast 130 years ago (he invented the donkey and the elephant, among many other things), I would be simple.

The Rat!! It is so obvious. Lawyers, abortionists, felons, Clintons...It is the perfect new symbol of the 'rats!!!

It is no good, we know it, it is avoidable, there are options, such as hundreds of thousands if not millions of Americans eager to adopt.

Just so! Bravo, Peggy!
