"Are they suspecting some kind of missle shootdown? "

You would need a full up and operating ICBM inerception system to do that. We are the closest to that. Nobody else has even a glimmer of that capability. This is a catastrophic failure of a shuttle system.

I predict a Russian Soyuz will be launched within days to remove the ISS crew. Don't look for any shuttle flights for a long time. The review boards will be endless.

Just heard from a SAS sister that Wwyne La Pierre's daughter's best friend was one of the aatronauts... so sad.

I believe they said the operating range for the emergency egress system was somewhere around 20,000 feet.

God bless them all, they died in the line of duty.

We need to stop sending these types of shuttles into space when they've now killed two entire crews.
While this is tragic, keep this in perspective. Statistically, more people died in traffic accidents last night, than have died in the space program.

ABC now reporting on the insulation strike at liftoff. This may be an easy explanation.

The real aholes are the ones spinning this politically in this thread.

I haven't read the whole thread. If it hasn't happened already, I am sure it is only a matter of time before the usual jackasses will spin this as a conspiracy by the Bush administration for some cockamamie reason that exists only in their fevered pinheads.

This is a very sad day. People leave this life under tragic circumstances everyday, but it takes something like a space shuttle disaster to wake us all up at once to look skyward and know immediately and together the fragility of life.

They were saying on Fox that NASA had been particularly concerned about THIS flight because of the threat of terrorism. I hope this is not the case.

Had the two women been in space before?

I hope that people near the impact site are being activated... they need to have chemical suits...to protect themselves.

Absolutely. I hope that we'll finally design better space vehicles. A second failure that kills the entire crew should not be ignored. No bandaids will fix the problems with the shuttle. We need new space vehicles, plain and simple.

It's a twenty-year-old design. It's about time for a new design anyways.
