The Baath Party, which rules Iraq, is actually the Baath Socialist Party

Perhaps this is why the socialists in the US and Europe are so oddly turned on against an attack on Iraq.

There's a problem for the North Koreans, I think, if they invade South Korea - the soldiers will immediately be able to see how much better the South Koreans have been living. Will that lead to rebellion?

I think what I'm saying is they can't really invade without opening their own society to some extent or another. Does Kim Jong Il realize this, do you think?

What is causing the North Korean people to rebel spontaneously in a land with no free speech and no due process?

Perhaps they have eaten all of the pebbles, twigs, bark and grass in the country and they're itching to try one of those western Happy Meals they've heard about.

Must be that rumbling feeling in their tummies.

There's been A-LOT of prayer about this, over the years.

Let's add to it.

This isn't really off topic...but remember the gunman, clutching a sheaf of papers, who got inside the gates of the UN a few months ago? He fired a few shots into the air and stood with his hand on his hip and looking really impatient while the UN security guards surrounded him. His attitude struck me not as dangerous, but like he was saying "Come ON already, HURRY UP!!"

I've often wondered what was in those documents he was holding and whether the UN would ever come clean...which it hasn't. Looks like an alternative method for getting the word out was more successful.

I like your PSYOPs idea. I wish we were a lot more aggressive with them on this front, which could potentially have a very good return for what money we'd invest into it. The traditional line seems to be to not try and destabilize the regime, overtly or covertly. Reading your post makes me even more convinced that there is merit to the covert approach.

Well, these people are starving to death. They may resort to eating Kim Jung Il and the other party members when they overthrow them. The more it looks like the communists are losing power the crazier they will act. Bet on that.

An effective PSYOPS campaign would be to warm a box of MRE's, set them at the DMZ and let the smell waft over to the north. They'd come in droves over to our side.

It won't lead to rebellion. It will lead to a lot of them not being lead anywhere. North Korean soldiers who know what the South is like, free from the security apparatus (who won't deploy with the army) and south of the DMZ could desert at the drop of a hat. Entire units could go rogue and disband, if prompted by their commanders (who would also be fleeing south).

To complicate things, the North Korean high command doesn't know for certain that an order to invade south would be obeyed by their own officers. The senior unit commanders know the score. Defending their side of the line is one thing, crossing it to certain death and defeat is another entirely. Unit commanders could either disobey or deliberately misinterpret orders to avoid battle. Any such men would be well treated by the victorious joint US-Korean forces later.

Nuclear weapons are much more reliable.

--It is said the Party must put its foot down at all costs, reject and keep out ALL Western influences and Capitalist influences, for it may erode and decay the socialist system.

In other words, if they had to compete in the arena of Ideas, they would lose. Therefore, they must keep those ideas from the NK workers.

How interesting you should mention its (socialist) mysterious omission. The Baath Socialist Party - each and every time the discussion of Iraq comes up - yours truly remembers to include it - the Socialists I work however cringe when they hear the term. I guess it's just another example of the Left wing refusing to admit that their ideology leads to horror shows all over the world.

"The US, in my opinion, for too long has not worked on ways to get the truth into North Korea on the standard AM band through some kind of clever technology to fiddle with the NK bandwith spectrum, and get broadcast in just below or above NK frequencies..."

True. Instead we got the Clinton/Carter/UN/DRPK Agreed Framework, weapons inspectors and food aid shipments (frequently delayed, and then untracked after delivery)

These problems in NK didn't start with the present Bush administration. They've been at a head for years now. The timing of NK's 'sudden' political implosion really bothers me. Kim seems to be pulling a quid pro quo, but the MEDIA attention and cries of 'crisis' gets me.

Now if we can just beam MTV at them 24/7, we can accelerate the total demise of their society.

Actually, for some it would have the opposite effect. You know, "if that is what the west has to offer then maybe what we have ain't so bad"... Most people I know think that MTV is disgusting.

North Koreans are worried about losing ideological control over the population

While it is good to see perhaps a sliver of truth appearing in the general population thoughts, I have to wonder just how much idelogical control does the Party still have over its soldiers and military officers?

If the military cannot be converted, US relations to North Korea will have a new element added to the current distrust... one of pitty.
