Run Your Own Country (VANITY of VANITIES - it's a game)
Nation States - Jennifer Government ^ | today | Frapster

Posted on 02/07/2003 11:20:01 AM PST by Frapster

A couple of months ago a friend of mine introduced me to a site called NationStates. The creator of the site built this 'game' he created to promote his book. It's not my intention to promote the book but instead to invite other fellow freepers to join me in creating a nation and moving it to the 'Free Republic' region. I have looked to see if a 'Free Republic' already exists but I do not see one.

Simply creation a nation and then once your nation is created you can then change the region you start out in. Once your nation is created and you're in the 'Free Republic' region you're all set.

Once your country is created you'll be presented with 'issues'. As you make your decisions your country's issues will effect the status of your countrie's civil rights, economy and political freedoms. This is what my country looks like. It's a brand new country and I'm the only one in 'Free Republic' at the moment - but join right in.

You can customize your country's flag, it's motto and it's currency. There's no way to wage war and there's limited number of issues. So if you change your settings to display 2 issues per day you'll run through your issues pretty quickly. You have the potential to see the same issue more than once pretty quickly but it will take a little while (a week or two) to run through them all.

The site can load fairly slowly sometimes. When I created Frapsterland it took forever to complete the creation process but it finally did.

You also have the opportunity to join the United Nations and represent Free Republic as the UN Delegate provided you get enough votes.

The reality is this is a huge waste of time but it's kind of fun to see how people's countries evolve. Give it a try.

I did a search and couldn't find this anywhere and I don't believe we've already set up a 'region' yet - so be sure and join the 'Free Republic' region once you're in. If there's already a region set up - please point me to it. Thanks!

I tried this out awhile back. Between the socialist thinking behind the events and the possible consequences of your actions, and the slowness of the game, it was not worth the time. Last I looked, I was a Capitalist's Paradise, or some such. Giving people choices did not seem to give them civil rights. Only if I tried to be Socialist did it seem to increase rights.

I agree - the game definitely has a left-leaning political bias on the impact of the issues upon your country. For example - on my other country my economy is 'frightening' while I have 'Few' civil rights. In my country description it say I have a major crime problem.

The servers are still a little slow but much faster than they were a month or so ago.

Why does this site have to go ruin it's credibility in my eyes and promote anything about the United Nations?

We now have 3 countries in the Region of Free Republic.

Here's the description of my country:

The Holy Empire of Frapsterland
"Shhh... be vewy vewy quiet. I'm hunting wabbits."

UN Category: Conservative Democracy
Civil Rights: Rare
Economy: Good
Political Freedoms: Superb

Location: Free Republic
The Holy Empire of Frapsterland is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its strong anti-business politics. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million are known throughout the region for their efficiency and work ethic, as well as their general suspicion of leisure.

The enormous, moralistic government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Religion & Spirituality, and Defence. The average income tax rate is 28%. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Furniture Restoration.

Crime is a problem. Frapsterland's national animal is the wabbit, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the bobble.

OK I will join your alliance just as long as our goals coincide. (This is a political reality that few countries will admit to your face.) BTW I just had my first issue on the crime rate. Where is the "arm all citizens" option?

The Free Republic of Harmless Teddy Bearsa is a tiny, economically powerful nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 5 million are either ruled by a small, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.
The small government is mainly concerned with Law & Order, although Commerce and Education are on the agenda. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 6%. A substantial private sector is dominated by the Door-to-door Insurance Sales industry.
Crime is a problem. Harmless Teddy Bearsa's national animal is the teddy bear, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the brun.

The text of the 'game' are very leftist leaning. It says that crime is a problem, but the government devotes most of its attention on Law & Order... a contradiction.

I bet that if I had chosen a high social welfare, then crime would not be a problem. Seems the author of the game needs to go read some books about the Depression era... no social welfare, but crime was not high either.

The Republic of Palm is now a going concern.

We are the second country in the Free Republic Group. Come one, come all. We can have some fun here.

Garde la Foi, mes amis! Nous nous sommes les sauveurs de la République! Maintenant et Toujours!
(Keep the Faith, my friends! We are the saviors of the Republic! Now and Forever!)

Hey, this can be fun!

The Dominion of Undead Gods is a tiny, pleasant nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, cynical population of 5 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The small, corrupt, moralistic government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defence, and Commerce. The average income tax rate is 15%, but much higher for the wealthy. A robust private sector is led by the Beef-Based Agriculture, Book Publishing, and Gambling industries.

Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to a well-funded police force. Undead Gods's national animal is the skeleton and its currency is the soul.
