DOG SHOW BREEDS CONTEMPT
NY Post ^ | February 11, 2003 | Andrea Peyser

No sooner had I walked backstage at Madison Square Garden yesterday when I was brushed aside by a beautifully groomed, purebred bitch who possessed the manners of a mongrel.

She was a dog owner.

"A- -hole!" the high-strung biped ranted, just loud enough to drive a sensitive cocker spaniel to the kibble.

Did the collie place?

The Collie is in the Herding Group. It will be judged tonight. Full coverage of the WKC show is available on the USA Network. Check your local cable listings.

Tonight they will be judging the Sporting and Herding Groups, as well as the Hounds. My bassets and I will be cheering for this guy, who won his breed today. Then again, he wins the breed every year. Three years ago, he won his breed and the Hound Group. When he walked out for the Best In Show category, the audience yelled its approval. Since NO basset hound has EVER won a best in show, the judge didn't want to break with tradition. I believe he handed the winner's cup to something small enough to fit in it. Here is .........

The AKC does NOT accredit anyone. More and more puppy mills are not registering with AKC because they don't like the AKC's inspections (facilities and paperwork). Further, the AKC is just a registering entity. It is not the "dog police"

Sorry I meant register, not accredit. Here are the requirements for registering to the AKC - http://www.akc.org/registration/registeralitter.cfm

And if you attempt to look in their regulations, you find lots of rules for showing, but very little to none on the health and well being of any dog.

Plain and simple, the puppy mills can charge more money for claiming a dog as AKC registered. The AKC gladly takes as much money as it can from ANYONE willing to give it money. The AKC sits back and knows that it is making money off the suffering of animals in puppy mills and does NOTHING about it. You claim that the AKC makes inspections of breeding facilities? Please show me any proof of such. I'd guess that there are more AKC judges at one minor dog show then there are inspectors for the entire country to look into breeding facility abuse.

Also, claiming that the AKC is just a registration entity does not absolve it of the responsibility to ensure that people are not commiting horrible acts to attain it's offical seal of approval. Especially when there is a known problem with puppy mills. Seems to me that the AKC would rather bury it's head in the sand and keep raking in the $$$ instead of looking out for the well being of dogs like it claims to do.

Mine gets baby carrots. The vet said within reason it's fine.

Hi Des! My "boys" just love green beans, carrots, celery, broccoli ... even lettuce. They get these "goodies" as a special treat.

How do I put a picture of my dog in this thread? I am so excited about watching the WKC show tonight because the breeder of my future puppy (beagle) is going to be competing!

Also, I disagree with the poster who stated that dog show people treat their dogs like beauty pageant little girls. Most of the breeder/handlers I have talked to genuinly love their dogs and make sure that they and their offspring have wonderful lives.

Ever try buying a puppy from a reputable breeder? It is easier to adopt a child, LOL! Whereas puppymill breeders just charge you an arm and a leg and sell to ANYONE.

Shepherding Group is tonight. Smooth or rough Collie? My border collies are not registered, but at least the AKC is not trying to breed herding instict out of the breed.

The only thing my Lab won't eat is jello. She even stole a dozen eggs one day and ate them raw.

We do, though, keep potatoes, onions, chocolate, etc., way out of her reach.

All animals belong outside.

Nope. Sorry. Dogs belong where they can keep your feet warm.

My kids play the silliest game with her. She has a toy stuffed Mallard duck. My son has a toy gun. They go out in the yard, my son shoulders the gun and shouts, "BANG!" and my daughter throws the "duck" as far as she can. The dog happily dashes after the "duck" and brings it back to my son, who gives her a treat. It's side-splitting to watch, and they all love it. ~ AAM Woody.

Why, thank you, I resemble that remark (chuckle). BTW, nice home page here on FR. Lots and lots about "judging".

Cockers are field dogs. Most of them also have field champion finishes.

Some rarte cockers are suitable for both dog shows and field trials. There are other seperate field trials bloodlines that aren't nearly as pretty. Most cockers are good only for peeing on the floor whenever they get excited.

Okay, well, I knew there was a reason I prefered Labs, Newfies, St. Bernards, Mastiffs, etc.

SPeaking of which, lunchtime. Time to go home and be accosted by the white tyrant.

Which is why, when the kid wanted a Cocker, we got an English Cocker. She's far more "birdy" (you have to watch her around the parakeet) and she's got a heck of a nose. She's able to track really well, and hopefully will one day get her tracking title if I ever get off my duff and work with her. She's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but she has the best of intentions.

She likes to run with the puppies at the pet store, but is still scared of dogs.

Try a bassett hound or a bloodhound. Any dog that is sturdy, has lots of skin to hold onto and is not agitato.
