C'mon...tape is real? Give me a break. Have we all gone brain dead or something? Two things are going on: 1) the US gov't has decided it is in its interest to pretend Bin Laden is alive, and 2) he clearly is not alive, since no other strategic move available to the Islamofascists would give more of a boost to their cause than to prove it. Since they are creating these con job tapes instead, Bin Laden is clearly dead. I agree. I'm just not sure who the existence of the tape benefits more. Us or them? I wonder which side made the tape? Certainly Saddam is wishing the tape hadn't showed up.

Tell me there are still not people that STILL say OBL is dead?!?!?!?
He is ALIVE, running between Bagdad, and Syria.
To: kjam22
yes
unless we knew of the tape, and didn't want to compromise how we got it, but then knew we needed more evidence, or wanted to force Al-Jazeera to play it early, as some have stated
hmmm...
To: dennis1x
I agree 100%.

Well this certainly puts the lefties in a bind.
The tape is from Bin Ladin whether it is or not. That can't deny it because they said Bush is failing the war on terror for not getting 'ol Binnie , i.e., he's still out there!
They can't deny the connection between 'ol Binnie and Saddam because it's on the tape to be aired.
Poor lefties. Bush slams them once again.

Very astute.

Why don't we save one missile for Al Jazeeera headquarter!

Tape is real. The tape itself is no doubt real. The voice on the tape is real.
It was not, however, recorded by Osama bin Laden, unless it was done before his death fourteen months ago.

It's Emmanuel Goldstein!!!!!
I also wonder about the other two members of the Usama, Ayman & Suleiman comedy team.

yes, there are, all the people out there who can think for themselves know he is dead.
the other poster hit the nail on the head. the administration has decided that it benefits them if they continue the Bin Laden is alive routine...which makes sense.
in reality, Bin Laden has been dead for over a year and we will never SEE him again.

Usama was really into this tape bit...he used it for everything; his speeches, terrorist education etc.. Interesting connection there to Asimov's Foundation book. Around the time bin Laden was a teen it was translated in to Arabic. Foundation was translated as Al Qaeda.
The hero of the story communicates via tapes -- long after he's dead.

If OBL were dead his head would be on a platter and the news would not be kept secret, it benefits no one to keep his death a secret but the enemy.

Answers to a couple of questions:
- The tape originally came via the al-Ansar News Agency in the UK, one of several press offices al-Qaeda maintains in the British Isles, per al-Bawaba.
- It was intended to be played following the Hajj and al-Jazeera was going to wait until then to air it. From the looks of things, they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar.
- The US believes the audiotape is genuine Osama. Whether it's recent or not or any other questions referring to authenticity, we honestly don't know at this point. It'll probably take the boys at the NSA a little while to crack this one.
- There need not necessarily be a mole at al-Jazeera for the US to know that the tape was en route. All al-Jazeera programming is strictly monitored by the Qatari government to make sure that they say nothing bad about Qatar. The US could easily have intercepted a phone call to or from the Qatari Ministry of the Interior.

Well, well, well, Al Jazeera has shown it's partisan players hand by initially denying the existance of an Osama tape. Even better, this confirms what PResident Bush and Colin Powell have been saying, Osama and Saddam are in cahoots, sympathetic to each other, and united in their desire to destroy the United States of America.
From MSNBC:
Al Jazeera reports the audio tape as saying "Osama urges Moslem solidarity with Iraq"

Can someone tell me how great a threat a chemical attack might be? Obviously, if you live or work in a densely populated area like NY or Chicago, then the risk is great. But I wonder if even in the city, is the damaged contained to several square blocks?
I remember when the first threats of radiological devices popped up, some knowledgeable Freepers had some good insight as to what the affected areas could possibly be, and it seemed much less than what I thought could happen from a radiological device.
Is that the same for chemical devices? I know that with bios, all bets are off.....

Would it be to much to assume we just outed Al-Jazerra..
