Marine struck by car, dies
BEAUFORT: After leaving a party, he lay down in the road and driver couldn't stop in time to miss him, authorities say.
By Stephanie Broadbent Carolina Morning News
A Beaufort Marine died early Monday after lying down in a highway after leaving a party and being struck by a car.
Lance Cpl. Gregorio R. Romero, 23, a native of Socorro, N.M., would have turned 24 today.
Romero left a party with another Marine and began walking to the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, where both were based.
"They had a really long walk ahead of them," said Beaufort County Coroner Curt Copeland. "He, for whatever reason, just lay down in the middle of the road. She yelled at him to get up and about that time a car came along and hit him."
Romero was run over on Joe Frazier Road, about a quarter mile from Broad River Road and about six miles from the air station. He died instantly.
Alcohol may have played a part in the incident, but Romero's toxicology tests were not back Monday evening, Copeland said. No autopsy was scheduled.
The driver of the vehicle, Stephanie Jones, 29, of Beaufort, was not charged. She was driving west and Romero was lying in the westbound lane of Joe Frazier. She couldn't see Romero in time to stop, said Senior Trooper Wayne Gaymon of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The friend walking with Romero told troopers he was celebrating his birthday early, Gaymon said.
Romero was assigned to the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (All-Weather) 224 as an aircraft technician.

Prayer on the way for Stephanie - though she didn't see him, it's a memory that will never leave her.

Very true. Prayer bump.

God bless all our troops- but just because you wear the uniform, don't expect the world to work differently.

Terrible for all concerned. Unless there's a misprint, it sounds as if the other marine was a woman, and it's not clear whether she had enough time or strength to drag him out of the road. Or likely they both had too much to drink.

Alcohol played a part. Wow. I'm shocked. [/sarcasm off]
This Devil Dog passed out in the street and his "friend" just let him lie there till he got crushed by a car?
Even in the Marines we have the dreaded "10%". These are the people who cannot or simply will not do anything right. These two seem to fit those descriptions.
Still, it totally SUCKS. At least they TRIED to serve their country. Unlike that hairy lesbian jermine garnafolo and that piss poor actor who played a piss poor batman. And don't get me started on the guy who played Mary Tyler Moore's boss 40 years ago.
What do we have to do to get THEM to lie down in the street?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How did this guy make Lance Corp to throw it away like this? I agree it SUX....but usually the 10% is less than 10% 'cause of the "attrition" in basic....
Why do I say this? My son worked his backside off to get to Lance Corp.....ACTIVE now....

I hope your son is led by Marines of the calbre I was lucky to be assigned to.
Overall, many bad things happen to Marines even when we are not at war. This is what my Senior Marines meant when they said "We have to move very fast, just to stand still."
I was 18 then. Over the years of my service I learned that even when America is enjoying her deepest, most recuperative peace, there are military members out there somewhere, hurting, bleeding, dying.
And I fully understand now that "We have to move very fast, Just to stand still."
And may God bless all those transformed or disfigured by their service...

I wish it were that easy.
But they'll do anything except put themselves in any kind of physical harm. Hence, the Idea of "stunt doubles".
Im making 20 million a picture, I won't risk myself in an effort to advance my communist or anti-American agenda.
Insstead, substitute this purely disposable working class gentleman who risks his life to make $20,000 per picture.
What is it about making bad films that qualifies these people to proselityze about foriegn policy?

Oddly enough, this happens occasionally. A few years back my uncle accidently drove his truck over two teens who decided to lay down in the middle of a rural highway to sleep off the booze they consumed at a party. My uncle was on his way to work, came around a curve, and 2 idiots were removed from the gene pool.

Unbelievable.
Personally, I like sleeping on something soft, if outside on grass or moss or on a bed.

LCpl is awarded after about 12-18 months of active duty (provided you do not have any NJPs or non-recs.) The next step up (E-4 Cpl) is a bit harder since it is based on a points system that involves marksmanship, pft, MCI's, MOS promotion zone, among other things.
Sorry your son had to work so hard to attain E-3. Most Marines are promoted to it rather easily including yours truly.
