Oops, the link I gave defaults to "Sun" view which always gives an illuminated disk. Click on "Map" then "Update" and you'll see an amazingly similar image to the one in the original posting.

I know it's the Sahara, but it's got white on it. The color balance in the rest of the pic don't jive with white for desert.

Perhaps as proof, you could generate a similar image? I'm trying and I lose much detail, granularity, snow, etc, and the aspect ratio's are coming out all wrong - flat image.

Maybe you could generate a very similar shot?

Yeppers. Pick a date in the summertime to get the darkness curve to bend to the right at the top. Something like 07/05/2003 and 18:00 or so. Click on Spain to zoom in.

How can that shadow bend be authentic? Try and make one with a flashlight and ball. What's that line following? A mountain range? Like it's a "dam" holding the shadow back? :)

Yep...really sad; Rush is usually shrewder than that. Someone probably e-mailed it to him...don't know if it was a set-up or not.

Andrew Sullivan saw it on Rush's site and was fooled too.

Man, that thing is REALLY obviously fake. And I know Rush is a space enthusiast.

Umm, well, that intelligent people can be fooled by an obviously fake "picture" (it's not even a real picture from something else attributed to the Shuttle, it's basically drawn) doens't strike me as proof of a creator.

By picking a different viewpoint (like a satellite) I'm sure you could generate the exact same image as the original.

Looks like a combination of these two photos: These were both made by combinging thousands of satellite pictures. I have both these photos in really high resolution (400MBs a peice) and could of easily made that photo.

The upper "photo" isn't a photo, it's a topo map of the world.

There's no "photographic" method of showing the ocean floor buried beneath thousands of feet of water.

Note the brightness and clarity...

Now look at the loss of granularity of your generated image.

If Rush's photo is faked, it was faked by a different process.
