Motorcycle was clocked at 157mph, court told

A motorcyclist was recorded travelling at 157mph as he flashed past a police camera, followed by a friend doing 148mph, a court was told yesterday.

It is believed to be the highest speed recorded on a British road and both riders were warned to expect a stiff penalty after pleading guilty to dangerous driving.

The men, both 29, were said not to be racing each other. Andrew Osborne, from Leamington Spa, Warwicks, who was clocked at 157mph, and Neil Bolger, from Gaydon, Warwicks, must wait until next month to find out their sentence, but were given interim driving disqualifications.

Magistrates in Aylesbury, Bucks, heard that the men were spotted on the A421 near Buckingham speeding through an underpass on a dual carriageway noted as an accident blackspot. The road had a 70mph limit.

Theresa Murphy, prosecuting, said they overtook a lorry on a sweeping bend before being caught by the speed trap.

Darren Rogers, defending Osborne, a master technician, argued that the case should be dealt with by magistrates and not referred to the Crown Court.

Nicholas Devine, defending Bolger, a lorry driver, said that although he was travelling at excessive speed there were no aggravating features. "There is no evidence of alcohol or drugs," he said.

The case was adjourned for four weeks for reports.

I don't blame the guy one bit.

The Brits have banned guns. They no longer recognize the Right to self defense. They are trying to do away with private property and the Right to jury trials.

So if you're going to be treated as a slave, you might as well do as you damn well please.

I hope the Brits decide to strip this "criminal" of his citizenship, so he can come here and gain citizenship.

It's England. They have cameras everywhere. Riders like to accelerate into and through a curve, so the cops just picked the highest camera reading.

If you decelerate through a curve on a motorcycle your rear tire is apt to slip out from under you, resulting in a "lowside" if the tire never regains its grip, and a "highside" if it does.

I hate this dude, I thought I was the overall speed champion clocked and ticketed at 149mph (not that the cops cought me, .

Since Europe uses metric system, that would amount to 238km/h.

For a skilled and seasoned motorcycle rider, and today's modern technology in bikes, and under the right conditions (no traffic, open stretch of empty highway), 157 mph can be accomplished quite safely. It's all relative.

I have a Kawasaki ZX-11, capable of 176 mph but have not seen it above about 145-150 (in Nevada). Also a Harley, capable of about 105 but it would probably blow up at that speed after about 10 minutes.

The concern is with the front tire. Acceleration transfers the load off the front tire. That allows it to keep it's grip. The back won't slip unless it's overloaded, or over braked.

You're absolutely right about relative speed. In Nevada, where you can see a straight road for 9 miles, 130 mph feels quite comfortable (although I have to admit that above that speed things begin to happen quite quickly).

Today's high performance motorcyles handle quite well at high speed, assuming you have an environment in which to place that speed.

Oh, I know..

There's no reason I can see for speed to be regulated as tightly as it is.

It's got to be the revenue stream & complete lack of fiscal dicipline that motivates this.

Nope.. I can get 118 out of mine and if I draft my pardner I get 122mph. Been there. Done that. And another thing, there is so much going on at 118 on my Electraglide FLHTC that I usually settle in at 100 and "style" down the road. :-)

But it likes 85 the best. :-)

What I ment, is that in Europe they "clock" you with cameras, and you receive your very own picture face and all, for your family album.

You are going to pay for the ticket, otherwise you will never see your bike registered, not to mention that your insurance is going sky high!

In the 50s in Los Angeles we used to do better than that on San Fernando Rd. between Fletcher Dr. and Glendale Ave. tuning up the race cars.

Did have a cop write me up one time when I ducked into Van de Kamps drive in in the sprint car, guess it looked kind of out of place with the rest of the street cars!
