The Vast Dubya & DeLay Conspiracy

June 30, 2003

Depending on where you go and in what circles you travel, conservatives are livid with the Bush administration. Some, more so than others, are furious over the size of the federal budget, the failing to rein in any kind of spending, tax cuts for people who don't pay taxes, the Medicare prescription drug benefit, the list continues - and there’s a great deal of head scratching going on.

I came across an Associated Press story over the weekend that attempts to shed some light on what’s happening, which you can hear me read in the audio links below. However, the story seems to imply there’s a conspiracy between the White House and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

Here’s just one excerpt: “DeLay has become the most identifiable representative of the party's right wing, and the two Texans have had a sometimes scrappy relationship. Clashes may become more frequent as Bush moves beyond his current phase of fund raising among loyal Republicans and shifts his attention to the general electorate, analysts suggest. At the same time, Bush and his advisers are mindful that if they go too far, they could alienate conservatives whose support he needs. ‘Bush is carefully picking and choosing his fights,’ said GOP consultant Scott Reed. ‘There's a healthy back and forth between the White House staff and DeLay that is mutually beneficial to both.’”

The story continues to suggest that Bush is telling DeLay to go ahead and stop what he’s trying to do - on purpose. The idea being that Bush can thus claim credit for supporting whatever measure, while DeLay and other conservatives can point to victory for blocking its ultimate passage. A caller later asked: “Isn't this the same strategy that Bush used on campaign finance reform, only he is counting on the Supreme Court to shoot it down?” You can hear my answer below.

No, I do not. I'm simply pointing at that who's doing what depends where you're sitting.

"I talk to Republicans AND Democrats"

I've got to admit that I don't talk to any Democrats.
There just doesn't seem to be any in the oil field.
I think everyone was just like me in thinking that GW was the answer to our prayers.

You should have been on hand during our first days in Iraq.
We were so filled with pride that we could hardly leave the TV to work.
The feeling has changed about 180 degrees..

Are you so uninformed that you don't know he raised taxes twice?

Well, there's where you and I differ; I never thought he was the answer to ALL our prayers, but he's a damn good start.

Well, you can accuse me of paranoia, but as far as I know the worst I ever said to you was that I had thought you had more common sense. Why do you feel it necessary to attack people personally, rather than simply arguing the merits of your position?

I hope that the lurkers appreciate your tactics.

And by the way, would you care to elaborate on that statement that Bush isn't a Christian?

It doesn't matter..

I would have given Bill Clinton himself a "good job!" over Star Wars, Koyoto, the ICC and other things.. Just like I did Dubya.

Likewise, this drug benefit and this tax pandering are going to hurt us.. regardless of who does it.

IMO, it's just wrong, regardless.

It's an objective opinion..

There's no article there; I did a Google and didn't find anything.

And that article is in April of 2001, not November of 2000.

Oh, put a sock in it.. You're the biggest hypocrite on FR.

Who told me that "some people" (obviously, moi) were always bashing, setting up impossible conditions that the President could never meet and on and on..

And over what? His mistakes?

Being pissed about his pandering is "setting up a condition which can never be met"

That's ridiculous. And anyone with any sense at all would realize that.

To be honest (something you may only have a passing familiarity with) I posted that to what turned out to most likely be a bogus article stating that God, himself, spoke to George Bush and was giving him marching orders.

I may have replied in haste.. haven't decided yet.

I am still considering it.

I am sorry, but I don't think that people who loved the President suddenly turned against him because of prescription drugs...

We certainly don't know what the final prescription drugs entitlement is going to be but I will bet that it will turn out to represent everything that is wrong with our current levels of government control.

I'm trying to remain on topic, and talk about DeLay. Someone almost killed him about 8 or 10 years ago in his Capitol Hill office.

"but he's a damn good start."

Okay, I won't contest your opinion, but I'd like for you or Miss Marple or someone , anyone , to tell me how he has started.
We still have the same number of liberal judges sitting on the benches, we still have the same march toward socialism in our public school system, we are still not allowed to put God back into our public lives, we are still shackled by the PC crap that is strangling our First Amendment rights, we're still battling a daily war to retain our Second Amendment rights, we're on a one step at a time basis toward socialized medicine, we have a real unemployment rate of 12.4% and we still have a border policy that is innundating this country with illegal immigrants.
Now, please, tell me how he's made a good start!

It's so hard to keep track now days.

(To quote another FReeper, who shall remain nameless.. I suppose "some people" simply have too much emotionally invested to be ojective.)

Good start actions:

Making it plain that we would not approve the Kyoto treaty.
Two tax cuts, despite the ranting from the media an the left.
Increased funding for the military.
Nomination of conservative judges to the bench.
Fighting affirmative action in the Michigan Court case.
Negating several of Clinton's pro-abortion executive orders.
Indicating his willingness to sign a partial birth abortion ban.
Beginning the steps toward partial privatization of Social Security.
Prosecuting both the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq.
Refusing to meet with Yassir Arafat.
Behaving like a decent and honorable man.
