I preferred the myth.
The myth? Are you saying a passenger uprising was a myth? Are you saying that the terrorists intended to crash that plane into an empty field and the passengers did nothing to stop them?
What happened is:
a) the terrorists intended to crash that plane into the White House
b) the passengers attacked the cockpit
c) aware that the passengers were going to retake the plane the hijacker at the controls crashed the plane in an empty field instead.
The only new thing in this story is that the hijacker crashed the plane deliberately rather than a) loss of control, b) passengers retook plane and could not recover it.
P*sses me off that the author of this article is acting as if this fairly useless bit of information somehow invalidates the actions of the passengers which it in no way does.
They saved the damn White House from, pretty much, utter destruction. Myth my a**.

It wasn't a myth. The passengers did fight back. One way or the other, it was the passengers who made sure the hijackers couldn't complete their mission. And AP and Reuters will never change that fact.

I never belived the american 'lets roll' hero story and I still don't. I think its more likely we shot it down, or the scenario described in this article.

This does not change the story. Really! It was thought either the uprising led to the passengers grappling or their incipient entry into the the cockpit led to what this report says.
What's the difference? The instruction would not have been given had the uprising not taken place and it is by our heroes actions that the flight did not make it to its intended target causing further death and destruction.
God Bless our passengers on Flight 93.

I preferred the myth. Doesn't matter. Whether they gained the cockpit or not has no bearing on their actions.

What myth? They DID attempt to overtake the hijackers!
They did fight for themselves, and to stop the hijackers from reaching their high-value target (they knew about the trade center and pentagon).
We didn't whether they penetrated the cockpit, or not, only that they died fighting to stop those guys. Heroes, one and all....

I preferred the myth. Why? In both scenarios, the passengers were fighting heroically against the low life scum who hijacked the plane. In both scenarios, the sick freaks died knowing that their mission would not be successful due to the efforts of the passengers.

US warplane shot down this plane. It is obvious but it is not what the public wants to hear. It was tragic but necessary to shoot the plane down. It explains why the wreckage was found spread about over several miles.

I preferred the myth.I don't consider it a myth and neither should you - no matter what, that plane went down when it did because the passengers did something. Had they done nothing and just sat there, God only knows how many 100s or thousands more would have died.
To: ambrose
How does this info change anything? The plane crashed because the passengers "tried" to storm the cockpit. Who knows whether they got inside or not. I'm betting they did and "jerrah" crashed the plane to avoid being totally thwarted and overcome, instead of just having the hijackers mission aborted by the passengers. If this had not happened, our Capitol or White House would have been plane-bombed.

I agree with the many comments on this board, that this article holds a derisive tone against the heroic passengers. This is a terribly written article, with a nasty tone to it against the passenger heroes. Where's the proof of the allegations?

Either way the heroic passengers caused that plane to never reach it's target.
