What kind of pain killers and how long?

LOL, you sure are interested in my medical history. Anyway, 3 or 4 days of IV narcotics such as morphine or demerol, followed by two or three days of "as needed" shots of the same narcotic analgestics and then two to three weeks of oral pain meds laced with one type or another of opiate analgestic.

In short, he is too valuable to jail.

IF you're serious, I would remind you of a Constitutional precept called "equal protection under the law." Rush has helped remind people of the Constitution for all these years -- it's ironic you would defend him with such a blatantly anti-Constitutional idea.

The simple reason Rush should not be jailed is that this is not how a civil, moral society treats people who are sick.

No, has Rush?

My question has to do with you, not Rush. The pain caused by cluster headaches is immeasureable. I know, and breaking away from betamethasone was tough.

In other words, I can understand why Rush got hooked after a botched surgery.

Can't you see how this will be thrown in his face forever- he is no longer a viable spokesman.

Why, because he's human?

He has a failing; he can't walk on water.

Does that make it more difficult for us? Sure, he was one of the leading voices in the conservative community.

Does this diminish the validity of his voice? Of course not. It gives the left a bit more to snipe at - but they always dig for and find something to go after. Our response should be to work harder - the truth is always the truth, no matter who delivers it.

We all have our failings; we have all fallen short of perfection time and again.

Is he supposed to keel over and go away simply because he made a very human failing?

If anyone is being hypocritical it is those who are piling on here. Regardless of how it happened, he is now seeking the help he needs. He has admitted that he has a problem.

But to hear some here, since he has a problem, he is now not qualified to comment on the news of the day; not qualified to comment on our government; not qualified to discuss conservatism; not qualified to continue to remain on the air. If you are looking for perfection, you are looking in the wrong place to begin with. You are looking at the wrong man. The only perfect man to ever walk the earth was a Jewish carpenter 2,000 years ago.

Rush's very human problems need fixing. Those who support him will do so without expecting perfection. Those who don't....

Well, those who don't probably never supported him in the first place.

Am I disappointed by what has happened? Sure, I am. I'm sure we all are. But I'm not going to beat him up for it. It's pretty sad that there is an element here who finds it easier to beat him up as opposed to holding him up and supporting him when he needs it.

He has asked for our prayers and our support. That's no less than what many of us have asked from our fellow FReepers. Why can't we give him what we so freely give our fellow FReepers?

Pretty hateful post there, Wolfie.

They just don't seem to get that purchasing prescription drugs without a prescription is a federal offence, do they?

Exactly.

He has a big hurdle to get over and we should all pray he makes it.

My question has to do with you, not Rush.

Sounds to me like you are going out of your way to make up excuses for Rush. He chose to path he took. The big question is why he didn't find himself the best pain management specialist available rather than resort to illegally buying narcotics on the street -- assuming all this is pain related and not just a cover for him being a full fledged narcotic junkie which is a definite possibility.

I wonder about the body chemistry argument.

If I believe in voodoo and someone says an enemy got hold of my fingernail clippings and cast a spell, I might make myself sick, and mistake the sickness for the "spell".

This would probably correlate with a change in my body chemistry, and a "spell researcher" taking blood samples, might even show the "spell induced" change.

If you don't believe in voodoo and someone says an ememy cast a spell, you wouldn't get sick, and the blood samples wouldn't show a change.

The spell researcher could conclude that spells affect people differently, possibly due to different body chemistries.

"The reason why you didn't become addicted is because your body chemistry is different. some
people feel lightheaded after taking an Advil, others do not. There is a medical science to addiction,
not everyone who uses cocaine becomes an addict, but many do."

And to complicate this, a possible "voodoo effect". People who believe in the power of addiction might stay addicted longer, due to their belief in the power of addiction.

There are people you never hear of...who don't resort to any escapes, they just face it.

I hope and pray that Rush can kick this. If he's in constant, severe pain his addiction is understandable. I have moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, and until recently had days where I literally could not breath because my ribcage hurt so much. I spent one five-day period lying on the floor literally unable to move.

Fortunately the pain fluctuated enough that it was possible for me to avoid long term use of pain medication. I tried Vicodin once. It wasn't worth it. The side effects were horrible. I was in a complete haze. But I can understand how someone could get addicted to it. You don't fully appreciate chronic pain until you live with it yourself.

The good news is that in the last several years some new genetically-engineered drugs have come onto the market. These drugs have minimal side-effects, and with regular use I can function normally. I now play soccer on a weekly basis, lift weights, etc. without any significant pain. Thank God.

Canned response. Not in anyway responsive to what I wrote.

That is all.

I submit that it's likely Rush would not say he was addicted if he had not progressed to the point where he was taking drugs for more than physical pain. One of the questions we will likely be chewing over here for a while is what constitutes "addiction."

I do too. He was addicted by his doctor. Rush is no druggie, he is a man in serious pain trying to alleviate it. That such should be turned into a crime in this country is abominable. That the scum in the DEA or whatever organization is doing this which have allowed this country to be filled with hard drugs should go after him is deplorable. That GWB has not fired the lot of them is to me a strong mark against him.

I am not. He did what any of us would have done under the same circumstances. Anyone who says otherwise is a hypocrite. People should not be prosecuted for doing what anyone else in the same circumstances would have done.

Good news. For future reference, should I have need, I'd appreciate the names of the new drugs. Hopefully I'll never have need, but...

My mother made no sense at all on Demerol, after thigh surgery. I wouldn't want that confusion.

To whomever said this:

"Can't you see how this will be thrown in his face forever- he is no longer a viable spokesman?"

Democrats still call him -fat-, for God's sake. They've called him a big fat idiot for years, and they never stopped.

He has zero credibility with liberals NOW. Why should their throwing -this- in anyone's face change a thing? It's not like their attacks were coherent or substantial prior to this.
