Update: # #286 - Amanda is home! Cancer free! "Mandy"13 y.o. in need of prayer-lump on hip & ca

CURRENTLY via FReepmail from LibertyRocks 02/11/2010, late Thursday

It was a rough day. We are right now at Children’s Hospital, we came in this afternoon at 2:30 and by 5:00 she was admitted as a patient.

We are in our own private room in the oncology ward - not because she is sick, or because they are thinking it’s definitely cancer (still on the table though), it’s because there are so many kids sick with the flu and H1N1 in the other part of the Peds wing. It’s nice because they are very private rooms, and very comfortable and “homey”.

= = = BACKGROUND via FReepmail from LibertyRocks 02/07/2010 [Superbowl Sunday]

Dear FRiends,

I took my daughter Amanda (13 yo) to the doctor last night [Feb. 6]. She had been complaining of a sore calf for the last 2 weeks. I (we) assumed it was a pulled muscle, and told her to take it easy - she was still walking around and wasn’t limping, but we didn’t notice she was walking on her tiptoes on that leg (long pants...). Yesterday, she came to me and said, “Mom it’s starting to hurt REALLY bad, and there’s a lump....” Turns out there was a lump there, and it’s been getting bigger over the last week or so (at this point it’s slightly oval and at least 2 in. in diameter!). At the doctor’s office we were able to get her in to get an ultrasound before the techs left for the weekend. I saw the ultrasound, but don’t know what I was really looking at - it seemed the mass was pushing out in between her calf muscles so its origin was deep - like next to the bone itself. After the ultrasound my daughter got nervous and confessed there is a lump on her hip that’s been there for some time (a few months???) - it’s much smaller, but it’s there.

[WHY don’t children tell their parents these things? I can’t tell you how frustrating this is now.]

Anyway, the doctor ruled out infection, and a blood clot, and they mostly ruled out a pulled / torn muscle (it would hurt WORSE on her toes if it were the muscle), but they can’t give us a diagnosis at this point at all. They are scheduling her for an MRI (of her leg & hip) first thing [February 8], we need to schedule an appointment with our reg. doctor ASAP for a referral to an Orthopedic Surgeon. If the MRI doesn’t give us more of an answer she will need a biopsy.

Please just pray for Jesus to heal my baby!

We’ve ruled out the “easy” stuff, and there is no history of trauma to the area either! This leaves a few VERY scary diseases - two that are cancers that primarily affect children her age. Combine that with the fact that her doctor’s are flying “half-blind” with only familial medical history of her father (I’m adopted), and it necessitates they treat this as if it’s a cancerous growth until they rule that out.

My daughter is normally a nervous person (like her mom), so please also pray for her to have strength, and not to worry. I’m trying VERY hard to be brave and strong for her, I’m praying with every other breath at this point.

Thanks to everyone for their prayers over our family. I know so many others are going through their own problems. Please know, you all remain in my thoughts and daily prayers.

God Bless all of you, LR

I agree. It may be hard to make though... Although still $800.00 — where do they have to go to get the ingredients, ya know???

Anyway, I do know that the pill form she is taking for the meanwhile has several different parts all made in different parts of the world... The little blue balls inside the capsule are only made in Belgium, and then there is another “barrier” of some sort made somewhere else in Europe, and the final part (I’m guessing the outer capsule) is made here in the US. Maybe that accounts for the cost, because these are still brand-name prescriptions. I guess a generic JUST came out for the liquid, so that might be part of the problem, too as the doctor wants her taking the brand-name. We don’t want to risk any problems.

Oh, I wrote an update at #193, and didn’t have time to ping you Dolly... Unless you saw on FB where I wrote earlier tonight. I should already be in bed, but I want to give Manda one more dose of pain medicine to keep it in her bloodstream and keep the pain at bay, before I turn in... I’m still exhausted! But, I don’t mind doing it, as you can understand I’m sure...

Thanks again for your prayers and concern. :)

I’m glad you’re able to be a home for a bit, and you know you’re always in my prayers! I’m glad to be able to do that for you. :)

Thanks so much for the book suggestion! It sounds PERFECT! I’ll be sure to find it in a store, or through our library system (they are awesome with getting books sent from across the state even). {{{HUGS}}}

Thank you so much! (New update at #193 tonight/this morning).

I’m not too worried about the medication as I talked with her Infectious Disease specialist today, and he said his office works with them all the time, and they “even know which form they need!” LOL I also know what you mean by the pharmaceutical companies helping those who can’t pay — the liberals never mention that, do they??? Imagine that a company with it’s OWN program for people who can’t afford things — no government involvement necessary! :) LOL I’m glad you’re able to get the medication you need, too!

Speaking of passing along the thanks, Manda and I talked earlier tonight about her doing drawings for everyone from the doctors, and nurses, to the ladies that help make sure kids have as much fun as possible while they’re in the hospital (it’s called the “Child Life” program). I will send her drawings/art along with thank you cards of my own! :)

There was a ton of art drawn by patients and others lining the hundreds of hallways in the hospital so she thought it might be neat to draw one for the Pediatrics Unit, too — one that matched the “decor”, or something fun! We could frame it and send it for them to put up somewhere.

Thanks so much for the prayers and support! We all appreciate it so much!

PRAYER REQ UPDATE ABOVE AT POST 193. and a new Req below for a different FREEPER.

Thanks for the update. Praise God for progress.

Prayers & hugs.

Blessings,

##################

Another FREEPER Bro (U.D.) amongst my ping lists has a couple of adult sons in serious different kinds of troubles:

Son DJ recently divorced from a literally very crazy wife with 2 boys under 5 has been from one new literally not so stable to not so sane woman after another—the last of which just left his house in the last 72 hrs, after 2 weeks, IIRC . . . after more silliness. He really needs to get right with God etc.

He desperately needs to quit flailing about for affirmation, connectedness and companionship and focus on God, his sons, his job and his own psychology and emotional stability WELL BEFORE any new relationships! Sheesh!

Mummy could stand to avoid bailing him out quite so reflexively, as well.

He’s also not that long ago recovered from gastric bypass. My own sense is that he’s really entering very hazardous territory in terms of getting his life together with God, or not. He does not have endless chances, imho.

It is almost like he relentlessly snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. He’s an RN and can do a good job at a good income but even that has been somewhat at risk on occasion because of all his flakey choices and behaviors.

Son DD just got hit on the head by heavy pots was getting down off the top of the frige. Now has slurred speech etc. and is scheduled for a CAT scan today.

ANYWAY—IF ANYONE HAS ANY PARTICULAR DISCERNMENT OR WORD FROM THE LORD ON THESE TWO SONS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. It’s been a long hard haul and is hardly over.

Then they have improved the anti-fungal meds if taste better than the bottom of a fish tank.

Cranberry pills might be in order, stronger than juices...Walgreens & Krogers & Rite Aide usually have them and you can get them 2 for the price of 1. I'd still take a probiotic along with the anti-fungal...if it kills fungus which yeast is, it will kill the good bacteria in the gut too. Probiotics are good for the gut regardless if you are not even on anti-fungals or antibiotics.

I’m so glad that things are going as well as can be expected for Amanda. Sounds like a nasty infection, so it will take time. I love her attitude about using the down time to read and learn! Reading is an excellent way to pass the time. A good book can seemingly transport you to another time and place where you can enjoy yourself despite not feeling up to par.

Glad she liked the picture of the flowers. : ) Flowers are one of the things that remind me how awesome and loving is our God that he would surround us with such beauty.

I’m continuing to pray for her, and for you all, that each day will bring more improvement toward restoration of her health. God bless.

Urgent & heart-felt prayers for the family so that everything will turn around for them, too. Especially as far as the little girl is concerned! How scary! I’m sorta focused on Amanda, but I’ll let you know if I have any feelings concerning them when praying at all, of course. :)
Thank you so much for the help in passing along word to everyone!
God bless,
LR

"No News is Good News" is kind of the feeling here
Since I wrote this update, she got her blood drawn and then we were able to go to the thrift store she wanted to go to for a bit as well.
But, here is an update I wrote yesterday on FB in case anyone is interested. I'm not going to ping everyone, unless I have time in a moment to go through my list, and FReepmails... :)

A Fungus Among Us -- UPDATE ON AMANDA 2/16 - 2:00 PM

Amanda will be getting blood tests drawn at our local lab here today, to check on how much of her medication is being absorbed. Please pray that her bloodwork is good so she doesn't have to go back into the hospital for IV medication for a few days... We'd love for her to be able to stay home now if possible, of course. Good thing is, if she does need to go back in we can go to the closer hospital vs. St. Joseph's (20 min. vs. an hour away).

Amanda is doing pretty well. Her pain is well managed with Tylenol III (w/codeine), the inflammation is going down and no low-grade fever due to the Ibuprofen she is on, and she seems to be tolerating her pill form anti-fungal well, too. No bad side effects, except a little flushing/sweating when the Tylenol or the Anti-Fungal hits her bloodstream, but that doesn't last too long at all (15-20 mins?).

Amanda is kind of enjoying the fact that she's getting spoiled with her favorite juices, and foods! LOL The rest of my girls' are so awesome helping me with taking care of her. Mandy even took her meds on time this morning with her sister's help before I woke up! Manda of course feels a little guilty needing so much help, but I explained that everyone needs help at least once in their lives, and that's what families are for so not to feel bad! :)

Her wheelchair arrived this morning - we are getting it switched to one that will let her elevate her leg so she can spend time at the library and the mall with her sisters. We got a follow-up call from the hospital and they are working to get the wheelchair order changed to one with elevated leg pads. (Should be no problem at all...).

They are still pushing paperwork for her liquid anti-fungal, but her infectious disease doctor and his office should be working with our Insurance today to get that all worked out. Not too worried about that, just wish it was faster because she really does need the liquid...

So far so good! My husband's new boss is an AWESOME guy - very cool about everything going on, which given the economy and that it's a new job it's a good thing. A person kind of worries no matter what with missing work and all. His boss assured him yesterday that his missing work is the least of our worries, so that helps!

Thanks again everyone for your continued prayers for Amanda and our family! We feel well taken care of, that's for sure! :) Thank God for all the little blessings we've received along the way - and I firmly believe everyone's good wishes, prayers and love have a lot to do with that.

God bless all of you & your loved ones,
LR

No problem at all... I really feel for all of them.

Just FYI: I just put up an update I wrote earlier this afternoon at #216. I need to go through my ping list and remove some duplicate names, and add a few from FReepmail before I ping everyone again, but Mandy is doing really well. Thought you might like to see what I wrote in case you missed it when you just posted! LOL :)

UPDATE - 2/16 8:30 AM - LIVER LEVELS RISING (NOT GOOD)

Here is an update I just wrote on FB in my notes. I figure the easiest thing to do is just copy & paste.

Hi everyone,

I just got a phone call from Amanda's Infectious Disease Doctor's office. Her bloodwork came back and her liver enzymes are a little high. Nothing to worry about at this point, but if they get worse they will have to figure out new medications, or put her in with IV meds or something. She will have more tests run first thing in the morning on Friday, so they will have the results that afternoon before the weekend starts...

Please pray that her liver calms down, and is able to tolerate these medicines -- she is on the one that works the best with this infection, so we really want her to be able to stay on them, not at the expense of her liver though, of course!

The options we are looking at depending upon her liver panel tomorrow are putting her in the hospital for a few days for IV meds, or changing the medication. She wasn't too clear about it, but that was my impression. We aren't at a stage to worry about Jaundice, but she said to keep an eye out for it, just in case...

Other than worrying about her liver now, everything else is working out well...

We should be able to check on the liquid anti-fungal as soon as Kevin is off work. The pharmacy couldn't check if they had accepted the claim and other paperwork because it automatically denied the "refill" due to her still having one day left of the pills! But, they ordered it for her earlier this week, anyway, so they have it, even if the claim won't go through correctly yet... (Ugh, insurance - don't get me wrong though, with the costs associated with treating Amanda, I'm very grateful to have good insurance! We will only be responsible for our $1000.00 deductible which she probably met during her ER visit a while ago... And definitely met it in full with the first MRI! Thank God!)

Kevin, Tina and I all have colds right now - stuffy noses, sneezing, etc... We think we got it from Kevin's work where there are half a dozen guys out sick right now. Kevin came down with it first over the last weekend and seems to be getting better already. I just hope I didn't pick up my cold in the hospital - lots of sick kids all around us. I think I'm feeling worse (slept almost all day and night yesterday) simply because I'm so emotionally drained right now... I'm just glad my girls are older and can actually help now when "Mom" gets sick! :)

I really can't thank everyone enough for their prayers, good wishes and support. I know I keep saying that, but it's so true. Everyone's wonderful posts of encouragement, and advice have helped us out a lot. Just knowing that there are people who've "got your back" so to speak is a real blessing when going through scary & difficult times like this. I'm grateful for the friends I have in my life who are like that. :)

I'll write another update once we know the results of tomorrow's blood tests RE: her liver functioning. Please pray that the problem goes away, or at least stays where it is and doesn't get any worse. Please also pray for her doctors, so they catch any other potential problems really early if they are to occur!

God bless you & yours,
LR
[I will go through and fix my copy of my update list in a moment and then will ping everyone to this note. Thanks again for everyone's prayers. I greatly appreciate it!]
