Why I am disappointed by Rush Limbaugh

Wednesday, June 09, 2010

Matt C Abbott

This column may open up a can of worms, but here it goes...

I guess we conservatives (and, for the record, I don't consider "socially moderate" Republicans to be in the conservative camp) should be grateful that Rush Limbaugh, a prominent media critic of the left for a number of years, hasn't been silenced by the powers that be.

However, as a pro-life, pro-family Catholic, I'm disappointed in Rush. He just got married for the fourth time and even paid Elton John, the anti-Christian queen of pop-rock, a reported $1 million to perform at his wedding.

Is Rush good at radio? Absolutely. Is he entertaining and interesting to listen to? I'd say so. Do I agree with him more than I disagree with him? You bet. And I will always appreciate his support for the family of Terri Schiavo, especially given that some so-called conservatives supported the morally repugnant Michael Schiavo's "right" to have Terri dehydrated to death.

Still, this is Rush's fourth marriage, and that says something about his character. Somethin' just ain't right. Look, I realize that getting married in this culture is like flipping a coin and praying that it lands on the side of "success" and not on the side of "failure" (yes, yes, I know that divine providence plays a huge role; this is my never-married cynical side talking). Yet I find it troubling that a man, albeit a talented one, who doesn't embrace the sanctity and indissolubility of marriage is so hugely successful with the, well...anti-left.

Perhaps Rush's profession isn't conducive to married life. Some professions aren't. But, to be blunt, living in and celebrating adulterous or fornicatory relationships isn't exactly striving to live a chaste life — and the natural and divine law requires that single people and married couples live chastely. This means no sexual activity for the former (unless and until they enter a valid marriage) and no contraception and/or adultery for the latter.

Thus, given Rush's problem with staying married — please understand that I'm not in any way condemning those who are separated or divorced for serious reasons and are trying their best to be faithful Christians — he should strive to live a chaste single life. Yes, it's very difficult, but it's the right (pun intended) thing to do.

Of course, he could give two hoots about what I think.

Ah, well. So be it.

One more thing: While I've never placed Rush on a pedestal, I guess I've thought of him as more than just "an entertainer." He's not like those Hollywood-types, I thought. And yet, he is like those Hollywood-types, at least in regard to lifestyle choices.

And that, my friends, is disappointing.

"What astounding arrogance and chutzpah on your part. I guess everybody will just have to dance to your tune from now on, whether they like the tune or not."

I don't make my moral judgments on the whims of my fancy..but on objective revealed morality.

I’ll continue to listen to him, but I have lost respect for him. (None of us are perfect.)

What astounding arrogance and chutzpah on your part. I guess if it is up to metesky they will be dancing with male strippers starting out in cub scout uniforms, like Elton.

How dare people object to that, huh?

“Gee, he has one little NAMBLA booster who has lobbied to make it legal for grown men to have sex with cub scouts sing at his wedding and people get upset.

Good.

Exactly! This is what made me lose respect.

Well, Elton is only an activist for man/boy love groups part time.

I have never heard about that. Do you have a link to his advocacy?

I'm annoyed at Rush for a different reason as well. Contrary to the rap the left gives about him bringing "incivility to the airwaves", the fact is that Rush did the opposite and brought civility to talk radio. Anyone remember what talk radio was like pre-Rush? Gone are the days of hosts who threaten their callers with physical violence, hang up on them, and call them names. (I grew up on Bob Grant myself).

I'm annoyed at the taming of talk.

Rush's fault!! ;p

“Our form of Government is a secular Government...”

In God We Trust.

We were and are a Christian Nation founded by devoutly Christian people. We also have freedom of religion.

“Divorce has been legal since this country was founded.”

Divorce has been legal under Gods laws for something like 3000 years. The casual divorce laws and attitudes we have are derived from leftists ideology.

Let’s forget about his personal life. How has the Conservative Movement done since he became famous?

“Some people need to get a life.”

Yes, obviously we should only care about the things you consider important Chuck. So please lay out our day for us.

You're right and neither do I.......Maybe he should have hired Pat Boon just to make YOU happy.

I like Rush, and his needing four marriages to get it right is disappointing. Hiring Elton John doesn't bother me at all, and I don't particularly like Elton John. But I'm a little surprised the article doesn't say anything about children. I'm pretty sure Rush has said he doesn't want any which would seem to indicate that his isn't a medical problem. The world needs more Limbaugh children and I would fault him for his selfishness in this regard.

Im with you . I respect his POLITICS. His home life is absolutely none of my business or of any interest to me . Who give a rats ass who he hired to play at his wedding? Maybe the wife loves Elton John’s music and he got him for her / What would anyone care. The friggin country has been taken over by Marxist and people are worrying about who’s entertained at Rush’s wedding . Give me a break.
The guy is one of the strongest we have on our side.

Start with Google.

There were several sites hosting the clip of his whole cub scout stripper routine in 1999, but the internet is not forever after all.

Are you talking about Rush Limbaugh?
If so, don’t listen to him, that’s why they call it an off button.

Oh, yea when you have a national radio show with 20 million, do what you want.

To be disappointed means one must have expectations. The whole oxycotin business showed that Rush was a man with flaws. After so many false attacks on him, I truly expected that would be another sham and I defended him to my husband and kids.

That was disappointing, but it pointed out to me that even though I listen to his show, I don’t KNOW the man...just his professed views on the things he cares to talk about. He sounds a lot like my dad; wise, unabashedly patriotic, funny.

I’m disappointed when the topic turns to golf or when he says, if you have kids in the room- turn off the radio. But for his private life- isn’t that just what private means??

I think he said once that he feels he wouldn’t make a good father given the life he lives.
