Pope [Shenouda III] and Muslim Brothers Angry at Bishop's Remarks on Quran

Pope Shenouda III is said to be angry about questions recently posed by Father Bishoy, secretary of the Coptic Church's Holy Synod, concerning certain Quranic verses, a source from the Coptic Orthodox Church said.

The source added that the pope has contacted several political and Islamic figures in order to ease the tension caused by Bishoy’s remarks and to preserve the strong ties between the Coptic Church and Al-Azhar. The source also said that the Church is awaiting the response of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, which will convene on Saturday to discuss the issue.

In a speech in Fayoum on Wednesday, Bishoy suggested that certain verses of the Holy Quran had not been recited by the Prophet Mohammad but rather inserted later during the era of Caliph Uthman bin Affan. He also called for a thorough study of the verses in question, contending that “dialogue and clarification makes one delve into the mind and abolish those verses that label us infidels.”

Meanwhile, the Islamic Lawyers Association has said it plans to file a lawsuit before the Supreme Administrative Court in the next few days to demand the defrocking of Father Bishoy whom they accuse of “intentionally insulting the Islamic religion”.

From his side, Leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Badeea has also denounced Bishoy's statements. Badeea said on Thursday, in his weekly letter to the Brotherhood published on the organization’s website, “We must respond to whoever slanders the book of God or the Prophet, (peace be upon him), by turning towards the book of God, preserving it in our hearts and making it evident in our morals, resolute for our homes and families.

Badeea, leader of the largest Islamic political group in Egypt, added that “The Holy Quran is preserved in our hearts and minds and work."

If the Coptic pope finds that problematic, then how does he regard this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ7I9Noi4Iw

The fact that Fr. Zakaria is still sucking air is a miracle in itself.

The Copts live a tenuous existence in Egypt amidst the Muslims. Any controversy like this makes some of them very twitchy.

The Oriental churches which some naive Jews and American style Fundamentalists seem to regard as "Baptists trying to get out" are nothing of the kind. They are quite comfortable with islam and much more hostile to Zionism and to American Fundamentalist chr*stianity than they are to moslems.

The Middle Eastern churches are the most anti-Semitic in the world, and since they are "indigenous" and non-white they can get away with it.

These churches are a lost cause.

How interesting that moslems will not tolerate the sort of "higher criticism" which most chr*stians and non-Orthodox Jews practice as a matter of course. Where are the attacks on "obscurantist fundamentalism" that one hears with regard to Jews and chr*stians who reject the higher criticism of the Bible? Apparently, not all "fundies" are created equal.

All the prestigious Western universities have islamic studies departments underwritten by the Saudis. Do you think for one minute they subject the qur'an to the irreverent blasphemies which they've used on the Bible for over a hundred years? Apparently not all "critical thinking intellectuals" are created equal, either.

This is only the start. It happens that Mohammed was a good Catholic, and taught nothing but submission (islam) to Our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ and His Church in union with the Pope in Rome. I know this to be true. It was only later that Arabs changed the Koran and made it non-catholic. See, muslims, don't you see how I honor your prophet? Just as you love and honor Jesus and Mary, which you keep saying you do, I love and honor Mohammed.

No, they are just not B*ptist. Just because F*ndamentalist Christians have a particular view of Z*onism, or of Isl*m, or any other thing, doesn't mean that anyone else is a "l*st ca*se."

S/He's making fun of me--a particularly childish behavior which I'm surprised any mature person would think would reflect favorably on him/her, but I suppose we should be grateful that political correctness hasn't killed all such expression.

Sadly, the Coptic Church tried to get along with Muslims by attacking the Jews. Obviously it did not work for the Christians in Egypt. The West should be aware of what is happening in this corner of the World, because what’s happening in Egypt and Middle East today will be the reality of Europe in few years if they do not wake up.

That's what most of the Middle Eastern churches do. They issued a statement a few years back attacking Biblical Fundamentalists ("Zionist chr*stianity is not chr*stianity at all"), and one of the Armenian Patriarchs (the one in Antelias, Lebanon) visited the Hezbollah front lines and declared that his church considers slain Hezbollah terrorists as "martyrs." But Zionists and Fundamentalists have it in their silly heads that these people are their friends.

Indigenous Christians in the Arab dominated parts of the Muslim world, whether Catholic, Orthodox, or Oriental, live in perpetual danger to their lives. Which is why they are fleeing to the West in increasing numbers, and those who can't get out demonstrate a Stockholm syndrome-like loyalty to their oppressors.

Unfortunately, even when they arrive in the West they retain their virulently anti-Israel, pro-moslem views.

The original victims of the Stockholm Syndrome supported their former captors, even after they were freed, and they were only captive for five days. The Christians of the Levant have been in captivity for more than 1300 years.

That’s not true, I am a Christian who has left my Middle East home many years ago. And I have always condemned the weak stand of my Church when they try to get along with the Muslim rulers. Someone mentioned the Stockholm syndrome, I actually consider the relationship between the Christian minorities and the Muslim rulers, as a spousal abuse case. Christians are living in fear of their Muslim masters, they do their best to please them and they get nothing in return. Those who manage to leave, gradually regain their own identity and self respect but it takes time.

Thank you, there are many Christians and some Muslims who are trying to stand up and fight for human rights and religious freedom. Some like Father Zakaria Botros take a critical view of Islam as a religion.

while others, like Nonie Darwish, fight for human rights.
