Skip to comments.President Carter says he clashed with 'fundamentalist' Pope John Paul II
Posted on 03/24/2012 10:09:41 AM PDT by NYer
Former US President Jimmy Carter has disclosed that he had angry exchanges with Pope John Paul II about liberation theology and about the ordination of women.
The former president said that he complained to the Pontiff about the Churchs perpetuation of the subservience of women while Blessed John Paul II was visiting the US in 1978, and there was more harshness when we turned to the subject of liberation theology. Carter said that he classified the Pope as a fundamentalist, placing him in that category along with Irans late Ayatollah Khomeini.
In the same interview Carter said that it is very fine for gay people to be married in civil ceremonies, although he suggestedmaybe arbitrarilythat churches should not be required by law to solemnize same-sex unions.
Carter made his remarks as he introduced a new edition of the Bible with his own study notes, helping readers to follow his understanding of the Scriptures.

Pope John Paul II’s 1979 Visit to the U.S. – VOA Video
President Jimmy Carters notes from his private meeting with Pope John Paul II, October 6, 1979, front
Although his notes are sketchy, they show that the discussion included particular situations in the Philippines, China, Europe, South Korea, and the Middle East. The White House issued a statement that day stating that during the meeting the Pope and the President agreed that efforts to advance human rights constitute the compelling idea of our times.

Peanut Boy is still alive?
Looking forward to the day when I can say, “Rest in peace, Mr. Carter”.
But he won't.
Jimmy’s just upset that Pope John Paul helped to bring down Communism.
Reagan forged one of the greatest alliances with JPII to end the cold war by keeping The Soviet Union out of Poland during the Gdansk labor revolt.
It’s easy for Carter to claim to recall some exchange with a Pope who has since passed.Carter is such an incredible POS,wish that rabbit would have gotten him.Would have saved us all a lot of trouble.
He is staging a comeback. He has lost the title of worst president ever and is in fear of losing the number one ranking of worst ex-president. Only by a more vocal and visible presence can he hope to stave off the threats and retain his title as worst ex-president ever.
I certainly hope they put a flashlight in Mr Carters coffin. He’s going to need it to find his way around in the dark.
Liberation theology is heresy of the first order.
Hey Peanut Boy, you may not know what “Blessed” means, but the Blessed John Paul II did more to advance human rights and freedom than you can even comprehend. You’re a worm.
You got that right!
I don’t think Carter will like the judgment of Jesus Christ for supporting liberal issues such as abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, etc.
Those issues are all spoken about in negative terms in the bible.
Not my call, but my guess is Peanut Boy won’t be resting in peace. You shall know them by their works...
We were most fortunate in the 80s to have three leaders such as JPII, Reagan and Mrs. Thatcher. Compare these greats to Jimmy Carter, the two Bushes, Obama and Cameron. Case closed.
I knew he was a bum back then. Even though I didn’t even like Ford, I believed Carter was too much of a deceiving phony and cast my vote for Pres. Ford (I was too young to vote for Ronald Reagan in the primaries).
The Baptist in me is appalled by this morally challenged ex-President. I’m also sorry that the NIV has sunk so low that they are putting out a Jimmy Carter study bible, presumably with notes on how to kiss the butts of dictators world wide...or to encourage other posterior activities.
Yes. The idiot peanut farmer did not understand your courageous words ... Be Not Afraid ... but I did. And they tore down that wall, didn't they?
I couldn’t tell. Was Jummah for or against Liberation theology?
We need the photo of the rabid rabbit.
He didn’t have a problem with his wife being subservient or the ‘fundamentalism of Hamas and Hezbollah.
IIRC, When I was in the South, a fundamentalist was a good thing for bible believing Christians.
It figures that Carter thinks a Mooze Lame mass murderer who married a ten year old girl when he was twenty eight is a lot like Pope John Paul II.
He also thought the people who fled to Canada to avoid the draft were a lot like those who answered the call and served in Vietnam.
Like many of us old men, Carter is probably getting inventive in his old age. He is confusing what he wishes he had said and done with what he actually did. And when he knows that he cannot be contradicted, he just says whatever.
Need to have one, common prayer in Latin
Pope John Paul II believed that the Latin mass was necessary?
Weak (read “moderate”) Republican presidents giv us catastrophic presidents. Ford, Bush pere, and GWB are examples this. By far Carter and Obama have been the worst of the worse.
Stunning. Just imagine the sheer arrogance of someone doing such a thing. A completely self-absorbed narcissist.
* a new edition of the Bible
* with his own study notes
* to follow his understanding of the Scriptures
O God, deliver us from liberal socialist democrats.
Actually, no, the Pope probably just prayed for him, because that message wasn't anything new. I'm sure the Pope had already heard all that from some alleged Catholic leaders, who likely had hung the same 'fundamentalist' tag on him.
Jimmy, it’s nunyaz.
Carter will be judged someday by God and will have to answer for his actions.
The Plains 7-11 will sell out of 6 packs of Bud when he’s gone.
calls him "fundamentalist?" that's positively absurd -- just so jimmah.
I noticed that. I don’t think I am going to take theological advice from Jimmy Carter.
Gee, I wonder how he got that bible, before he took his turn corrupting it?
Smell the humility. Bless his soul.
Too bad he didn’t go Louie and mix it with the quran... Oops, better see it first.
We’re not praying enough.
Even the Devil can quote Scripture.
I see he has adapted the latest liberal “religious” teaching....”Jesus never said anything about homosexuality”...
They aren’t very deep thinkers are they?
Jimmy Carter is slimier than buzzard puke . . . I’ll vote for the Pope in this one and I’m not Catholic.
Jimmy Carter: on the wrong side of history yet again.
And a man with the worst judgement of any president outside of the current one...
America should have elected Billy instead.
I look forward to this day:
That is true, and Ronnie deserves credit...but he would also be the first to acknowledge and celebrate that the overwhelming moral authority of the Polish Pope, in his pilgimage to his homeland, disarmed Jaruszelski and defeated the totalitarians without a shot being fired.
When the communists saw the tsunami of love and determination from his countrymen they knew they were licked, that neither Soviet tanks nor the gates of Hell could answer to the power represented by the Blessed JPII.
When Jummah Cahtah’s mother Lillian made the statement, “Sometimes when I look at my children, I say to myself, ‘Lillian, you should have remained a virgin!’” She wasn’t just whistlin’ Dixie!
The Pope then paused before adding, "Tell your Uncle Teddy I will pray for his soul too."
Carter was upset and stormed off muttering, "Who does this stupid Pollack think he is? God's Vicar on Earth?"
A very accurate description of Carter is Marxist Fundamentalist, or would Progressive Fundamentalist have a better ring to it?
What an embarrasment to Protestants.
