Pray for our American Heroes
October 5, 2013 | Irish Rose

Posted on 10/05/2013 10:13:24 AM PDT by Irish Rose

Show me, O LORD, my life's end
and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting is my life.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Each man's life is but a breath.
Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro:
He bustles about, but only in vain;
he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.

But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.
Save me from all my transgressions;
do not make me the scorn of fools.
(Psalm 39:4-8)

God of heaven, we thank You for all Your continuing goodness to us.

Father, as priests contracted to serve our troops are furloughed in the shutdown and even forbidden to serve without pay, help these priests to know what You would have them do. Please bring about a change of this decision, and protect Your servants who seek to minister to our military.

Lord, during this shutdown and showdown in Washington, we pray for Your grace on our nation, and Your wisdom to our leaders. Change the hearts and minds that need it; grant courage and direction to those whose convictions are right.

Show us, O LORD, our life's end and the number of our days; let us know how fleeting are our lives. You have made our days on earth a mere handbreadth. The span of our years is as nothing before You – who was before time and is to ages everlasting, without beginning of days or end of life. Man is a mere phantom going to and fro – bustling about, but only in vain, heaping up wealth we cannot keep. But now, Lord, what do we look for? Our hope is in You. Save us from all our transgressions, and turn our eyes and our path toward heaven – where moth and rust do not destroy, where thieves do not break in and steal. We pray to You, our Lord of eternity, in the hope of what You have promised, in the Name of Jesus, Amen.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR OUR AMERICAN HEROES AND FOR OUR BELOVED NATION!

GEN. GEORGE WASHINGTON
THE PRAYER AT VALLEY FORGE

IN THE COLDEST and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered those prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting Glory, and bestowed His manifold benefits upon the new Nation.

FROM THE BRAVE, albeit weary, ill-equipped, and untrained volunteers who straggled into Valley Forge on 19 December 1777 arose, with the help of some gallant friends from across the waves, the cohesive fighting force that became the United States Army, global defender of Freedom and scourge of Tyrants.

AS GENERAL WASHINGTON lifted his prayers on high in that bleak Winter, let our prayers now rise like a fountain for our Heroes in the American Armed Forces who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and envelop them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

HEAVENLY FATHER, Lord of the Nations, unto Your Divine Mercy we commend the souls of these valiant men and women who have fallen in the service of our Beloved Nation and in defense of the Freedoms we hold dear. We pray that You gather them in Your loving embrace, that You cause Your Countenance to shine upon them, and that You vouchsafe their souls to dwell eternally in Your Divine Presence. Through Jesus Christ Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

The Value Of One

October 5, 2013

Only hours before Kim Haskins’ high school graduation, an auto accident took the life of her father and left Kim and her mother hospitalized. The next day, Joe Garrett, Kim’s high school principal, visited her at the hospital and said they wanted to do something special for her at the school. The Gazette (Colorado Springs) article by James Drew described the outpouring of love and support as the teachers, administrators, and classmates—deeply touched by Kim’s loss—filled the high school auditorium a few days later at a graduation ceremony just for her.

Principal Garrett said, “We talk a lot in education about no child left behind. In the military, they talk about no soldier left behind. Today, this is about no graduate left behind.”

Jesus underscored the importance of every person to God with three stories about something lost—a sheep, a coin, and a son (Luke 15). In each story, a person has lost something of great value. When it is found, friends and neighbors are called to celebrate and rejoice together.

The point is clear: We are all of great value to God, who offers us forgiveness and new life through Christ. And He faithfully pursues us with His love and grace. There is great joy in heaven over one sinner who repents (v.7).

I was lost but Jesus found me—
Found the sheep that went astray,
Threw His loving arms around me,
Drew me back into His way. —Rowley
Our value is measured by what God has done for us.

Read: Luke 15:1-10

What man . . . having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost? —Luke 15:4

Thank you for praying for our nation during these hard times. May God's Spirit give you rest.

Then men will say, "Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth." (Psalm 58:11)
