If he is religious he has no possessions.

Once again, not all religious take vows of poverty.

Salvation is a matter of life and death.

Robbing corpses is not a requirement for salvation.

So only orders that take vows of poverty prohibit stealing from the dead?

Aside from the media-chosen wording "confesses," we need to know whether the Pope thinks what he did was wrong or not.

Of course he thought is was wrong, he stated so himself:

And immediately there came to mind the thief we all have inside ourselves and while I arranged the flowers I took the cross and with just a bit of force I removed it," he said, showing with his hands how he pulled the cross off the rosary.

It’s bizarre! This is the guy they insist is the stand in for Christ. The guy who supposedly can speak “ex cathedra”. Infallible no less. Yet they try to explain away “thou shalt not steal”. And people still follow this bunch of fakes.

uh ok, it’s not ok with me, as a serious Catholic that this dude stole a rosary from his confessor’s cold dead hands.

surely metmom, you have more intelligence than to insult someone’s religion

and surely you are not suggesting that taking a rosary off a corpse is an act of courage

No, of course not, but bear with me, please. I’m tackling problems within my own religion by starting first with the easiest errors to be corrected.

Not that robbing the dead should also be an obvious wrong to anybody with a good conscience.

No sir I helped my father’s friend on busy weekends at a funeral home. The rule is if the family wanted it the funeral director set the items aside. Once the body was prepared and items put in the casket, they stay there. If Francis wanted the crucifix from the rosary he should have alerted the director. Yanking on an embalmed hand or finger is bad business.

Outrageous, not courageous.

My comment was directed at the defense of the pope by some FRoman Catholics on this board.

There will always be some FRoman Catholic who steps up to the plate in defending the indefensible perpetrated by another Catholic, especially the clergy.

Robbing the dead! I bet he pried out the gold in the guys teeth and took his pinky ring : )

I heard this is what poor Mormons did to build a temple somewhere...

Would a soldier taking an ammo pack off of a dead comrade be stealing?

What does that have to do with stealing things out of the casket at a funeral home, that the dead was going to be buried with?

You worked at a funeral home, and buried how many clergy?

Probably don’t realize that they actually work together, A LOT.

Good thing he did not yank off a finger when he tugged off the rosary.

What about them Jewish 'bris' guys?

I hear they work for tips!

Self-righteous indignation coming from non-influential third parties over the internet.

But you probably just want to beat up on anyone Catholic tonight.

It's a wonder he did not pull off a finger.

It is NOT without precedence:

Pope Stephen VI (896–897), who had his predecessor Pope Formosus exhumed, tried, de-fingered, briefly reburied, and thrown in the Tiber.
