Is Prayer/Veneration/Worship to Mary Biblical?
self | 12-14-14 | ealgeone

The reason for this article is to determine if the worship/veneration given to Mary by the catholic church is justified from a Biblical perspective. This will be evaluated using the Biblical standard and not man’s standard.

Kind of think some of these posts are made under the influence if you get my meaning.

Enough of this sidebar.

Don't make the thread "about" individual Freepers. Discuss the message, not the messenger.

Inviting other Freepers to give out personal information after threatening a bar fight is an all time low for this forum.

Beautiful!

Please note also, Gentle Readers, that the prayers of the Rosary consist of: the sign of the Cross, that is, praying as we were Baptised, "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit;" our Creed; the Lord's Prayer; verses from Luke's Gospel pertaining to Mary; verses from Revelation giving Glory to God. During each decade, we are called to meditate upon the Mysteries of Jesus' early life; ministry; passion and death; and the mysteries of the Glory given to God the Father through Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the apostles and disciples, and Mary.

God bless you!

The Fourth Commndment: IV.Honor your father and your mother. So we honor Mary as the Mother of Jesus and our spiritual mother.

Good job! I never thought of that particular point before!

Say what!!! If you have any spiritual mother it’s Eve.

Actually, Eve would be our biological ancestral mother. So would Noah's wife.

Your comment: “I’ve oftne thought catholics tend to gravitate, especially the priesthood, because she’s female. A mother they never had or a woman they can’t have.”

You seem to have no “Honor” for the Mother of God. Your comment is repulsive and uncalled for.

The Blessed Virgin Mary followed obediently the will of God. I hope that we can all do as well so that we can join her with her son Jesus in Heaven.

God's peace be with you.

So we honor Mary as the Mother of Jesus and our spiritual mother.

Galatians 4:26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.

Neither did I.

But the truth won’t stop the RC’s from continuing to make that false representation of former Catholics.

I can only guess that it feeds their spiritual pride, to make them think that they’re holier than thou to still be a Catholic.

The scripture quotes provided do not prove that Catholics worship the Blessed Mother.

The scripture quotes provided certainly prove that we are to worship God alone.

Catholics worship God alone.

Because God alone is to be worshipped (from the scriptures, and Catholics believe each and every one of the scriptures provided); then therefore this somehow proves that Catholics worship Mary?

A does not equal B and your logic fails.

Catholics do not pray TO the Blessed Mother. Catholics request intercessory prayer FROM the Blessed Mother.

Have you ever asked a Christian friend to pray for you? Are you now praying to that friend and worshipping them simply because you ASKED?

Protestants do not understand Catholicism and have no business falsely interpreting our faith and then hating on Catholics. It is wrong, mean spirited, and not Christian.

If a person does not have the intellectual capacity to understand the difference between intercessory prayer and worship, the problem is the ignorance of the non catholic’s understanding, not the intercessory prayer itself. The bible allows intercessory prayer and the protestants are perfectly aware of this. That is why they falsely accuse us of worship instead of attacking the perfectly acceptable practice of intercessory prayer requests.

Catholics worship God alone, especially in the Eucharist. Protestants fail to understand the Eucharist so their concept of Worship is entirely messed up. This is also a reason about the confusion surrounding supposed Mary worship.

No one has the authority to malign a concept that surpasses their intellectual grasp.

If the Protestant Reformers, most notably Martin Luther, were discontented with the sale of indulgences, which most informed Catholics will admit was not the way things were meant to be, why was the idea of Purgatory rejected completely, instead of simply rejecting the sale of indulgences?

Because it is not mentioned anywhere in Scripture nor is it even alluded to.

The only thing that cleanses us from sin is the blood of Jesus. Suffering can't do it.

So this is considered a false teaching leading some to conclude that there's another way for our sins to be dealt with than by trusting in Jesus.

The Scripture proves nothing about what Catholics do on the personal and individual level.

The best you can say is that it’s not official Catholic teaching to worship Mary.

But the evidence found in watching people bow to her and the prayers easily found on the web directed to her, tell a different story.

Talk is cheap.

What she said.:-)

It leads to a works theology.

When I do good works, it is because I love God, not because I am trying to earn something.

Perhaps I misinterpreted your original assertion.

Catholics definitely believe that the communion hosts become the Body of Christ - as He Himself said “This is My Body”.

They do, however, still maintain the appearance of bread, as does the communion wine maintain its appearance of wine, though it’s been converted into His Blood, as it was at the Last Supper.

I thought you were claiming it was actually converted into meat; if that was not your claim, I retract and apologize for my accusation.

I’ve not seen any denial of prayer to Mary; I’ve seen denial (and maintain denial myself) that we worship Mary.

First, Mary is not your mother. Second, no one is dishonoring her but worshipping her is against God. Period.

Do not be deceived; it is a distraction from the sole worship of Christ.

But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. And when the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching. ... Matthew 22: 31-33

Do you believe in miracles?

The Miracle of the Sun occurred October 13, 1917 in Fatima, Portugal. It occurred during the last Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. This miracle was witnessed by between 70,00 and 100, 000 people. Many there that day confessed, they thought it was the end of the World. Others were convinced the whole world would repent and convert.
