Eucharist in the creed?

Msgr. Charles Pope

Question: The true presence of Christ in the Eucharist is central to our Catholic faith, and many converts say it was essential to their conversion. If this is so, why is the true presence not mentioned at all in the Nicene or Apostles Creeds? Should it not be added at the end where we state things like our belief in the Communion of Saints, the resurrection of the body and so forth? Jerry Roventini, via email

Answer: There are many things that are not mentioned in the Nicene Creed. There is no mention of the Ten Commandments or grace; neither are we told what books belong to the New Testament or that we should care for the poor, etc. The creed is not a catechism; it is a statement of certain key doctrines that were disputed at the time of its composition in the fourth century.

The creed was composed in response to debates about the divinity of Jesus Christ and the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. While there are a few concluding statements related to ecclesiology and eschatology, the Nicene Creed remains preeminently a statement of faith in the one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The belief in the true presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist was not widely disputed at the time. And to the degree it was, the need to definitively teach on the divinity of Christ was an important foundation in order to establish his true presence in the Eucharist.

In the Sacred Liturgy, many signs and words indicate the Real Presence. The words of the consecration, which are Jesus’ own words, say, “This is my body … my blood.” The priest later says, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” There are also signs of the Real Presence in our reverence of kneeling and genuflecting. And, as Communion is distributed, there is the simple creedal declaration and response: “The body of Christ. Amen.” Therefore, in the wider liturgy of the Mass and devotions such as adoration, the Church proclaims her belief in the True Presence.

While it would not intrinsically hurt to add to the Nicene Creed, one might wonder where it would stop. Further, since the creed is shared by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, adding to the ancient creed might harm attempts at unity.

Pope Paul VI wrote a longer “Credo of the People of God” which does speak to the Eucharistic presence, but it is too long to recite at Mass.

Why do you capitalize "accurate" and "true"? They are adjectives, not proper nouns, nor are they the beginning of a sentence. Are you a foreigner?

Oh, dear...another wannabe Forum Grammar Nazi!

The prohibition against eating blood predates the Law.

And it was reiterated by the Council of Jerusalem to be observed by Christians (see Acts 15:29).

“An excellent book.”

If you would actually spend all your time studying the Holy Word of God instead of the ccc, four witnesses, and other non essential material you wouldn’t be worshiping idols. I got a new idea for you instead of reading the ideas of others why don’t you read a chapter and pray about it and let the Holy Spirit guide you to the Truth.

It will take patience and a lot of faith because you will not get your answers quickly, but you will know that your soul is safe for eternity instead of wondering if you will need purgatory.

Frankly, I forgot that Paul commanded gentiles to abstain from blood. I concede that the prohibition of blood for Believers is a well made point.

"As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality." - Acts 21:25.

Please look into the definition of transubstantiation. And remember, that with God, this is possible. Why not believe?

Jesus speaking... "The Words that I Speak unto You, They are Spirit, and They are Life." John 6:63

His WORD is Spirit and Life! He didn't say becoming a cannibal is Spirit and Life.

Many Christians are not familiar with Genesis...

Oh?

I find way too many of them know very little at ALL about the bible; other than a few verses here and there!

Man, you’ve got me thinking about how different my life could have been. I’m sure it would not have turned out as well as it has.

I didn’t give much thought to what the government would have done. My more immediate concern was what the reaction of my parents would have been. I don’t think they would have disowned me; they might have kicked me out of the house. They certainly would have been disappointed, which would have weighed very heavily on me.

Ever try to do a genealogy of the families in Genesis? Very interesting...

I was told once by that very poster, that she didn’t have time for bible study - She has a life you know!

Actually, the elitist cult of Mormonism was basically banned from promoting its heresies here...

Uh; I think it was their ARROGANCE that got them in trouble; not their unprovable history of the Ancients.

They can still post here; it just seems they've gotten tired of defending the undefendable.

I didn’t give much thought to what the government would have done. Well you should; since you conflated Mary's 'acceptance' into a act similar to yours.

If Mary had told told the angel, "Nope; no way!"

What do you think would have happened?

Here is a hint:

31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.

32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.

33 And of his kingdom there shall be no end.

I can’t change what I should have or should not have thought over 45 years ago.

I believe my action was similar to Mary’s. I answered my country’s call. Mary answered God’s call. Recall her response. “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” Luke 1:38

There is no if, there is what did happen.

**One needs food for a journey, whether it’s across the states, North America or the world.**

Yes, we must eat regularly, or we will be hungry, or eventually starve.

Jesus Christ told the Samaritan woman at the well:

“If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” Jn 4:10

Of course the woman was perplexed at hearing of living water. She remained unspiritual, thinking of well water, to which the Lord replied:

“Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Jn 4:13,14

So, in your teaching, if the Lord’s Supper is literal flesh and blood that gives eternal life, one time should last forever. It won’t wear out like earthly food.

But, it is an effective way to get parishioners to keep coming back to church service.

I know RCs that show up just in time for mass, since they feel that everything else is not critical.

There is no if, there is what did happen.

Likewise; there is no authorized guessing by Rome of what Mary did or did not 'agree' to.

There is ONLY what is recorded in the Word.

Luke 1:26-38  Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)

26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,

27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

29 Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.

30 And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.

34 And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?

35 And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shalt come upon thee, and the power of the most High shalt overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shalt be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36 And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:

37 Because no word shalt be impossible with God.

38 And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

(shall / shalt is NOT 'asking' Mary if she'll do something for GOD)

(This ain't CONSENTING)
