white powder again, at my own post office
Posted on 10/12/2001 4:23:16 PM PDT by Carol Roberts
I went to get some dog food and found cops and fire personnel at the shopping center. Turns out some white powder was received by the Mail Boxes Etc next door to the pet store. Incidents like this seem to be happening all over the place. Still don't know what is going on here locally. Think I'll go get some antibiotics!

Carol, why would you go get antibiotics? If you do then consider that you might be part of the problem instead of the solution.

Sorry - forgot the smiley. Everybody in the area was talking about taking antibiotics and I mentioned it was a little early for that.

We had a situation in a city near me last night. A pkg. delivered to a medical office with white stuff on it turned out to be dried glue. They did call out all the "heavies", hazmat F.D., cops, media, etc. Someone on the radio this morning said a cop told him, if this had happened two months ago, nothing would ever be said or done or it would haven't even been noticed.

The only person who has thus far been known to die from a "mailed white powder" attack was Stevens whose vision was so poor he probably had to hold the letter very close to his face. Osama, if he is still living, must be giggling his fool head off at the "terror" from these attacks and the copycats, and so simple too (like the airplane attacks). No laborious production of tons of bacteria and the laborious re-engineering of a crop duster, simply put a teaspon of powder in each addressed envelope and mail it.
Based on events so far there is no need to worry about being killed by a case of inhaled anthrax for anyone who didn't literally stick their nose into one of these powder mails.

There is a rumor going around NW Indiana that a post office here has been shut down, Haz Mat called, etc., but I can't find any confirmation on the net. It seems that people are so worked up over this that every little thing is causing an alarm or a rumor. I'm not saying that some of the rumors, suspicious packages, etc, turn out to be founded, most will be unfounded and just cause fear. Remember, "The only thing was have to fear is fear itself."

Remember, "The only thing was have to fear is fear itself." Excellent point, TopDog2. I've got many friends afraid to go to the mall on Oct 31, afraid to do just about anything. The wife and I are trying to convince them otherwise.

With all this stuff showing up in the mail . . . I wonder if they checked postal workers?

before you rush out and start taking antibiotics please look up the article I posted titled:
Sources:Boca hospital over-prescribing Cipro.
It details alot of the really bad side-effects and complicatins caused by this med....
"Cipro can cause a life-threatening type of colitis, a chronic irritation of the bowel" among many other things....not to mention that when people take antibiotics that they really don't need resistant-bacteria are created.

Watertown, NY ...hazmat Wednesday called to a Doctor's office....white powder being found.....turns out it was the residue from a broken flourescent light bulb...
That being said, I see no negatives from people being on the alert about this threat, and yes, it is a threat. It is more upsetting to see the coverup attempt . I am concerned about this but not in any way altering my daily life.
I do a lot of mailings as I am quite active on E-bay and this week has seen a lessening of my revenue stream to some degree. I think it is more that people are focused on Afghanistan, and the anthrax effect has not kicked in yet.
I think the most interesting thing to date is that in the NBC case, many tests came up negative for anthrax only a very subsequent test (good thing they did not give up on it) proved it to be anthrax.

Most antibiotics are inherently corrosive to the digestive tract. Chronic use of any one form of an antibiotic is to be avoided as the targeted bacteria ultimately becomes drug-resistant and secondary effects such as ulcerative colitis can evolve. To start with , most people over the age of 40 have some form or another of IBS, and "abuse" of antibiotics can exacerbate those conditions.

I'm sure they are. Or will. If the powder tests positive (which I predict it won't in 99% of the cases).
