Democratic sources say that H. Rodgin Cohen, a partner in the New York law firm Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, and the leading candidate for Deputy Treasury Secretary, has withdrawn from consideration. I reported last week that Cohen was likely to be officially nominated for the Deputy Treasury Secretary position. He's been a counsel to just about every major player on Wall Street. Now, the nomination is off. Democratic sources said that an issue arose in the final stages of the vetting process. Cohen had risen to the top after the withdrawal last week of expected deputy treasury secretary pick Annette...

In the last week, many liberal Democrats have taken to ridiculing the center-right and right-wing reaction to the administration’s budget proposal. They say the opposition is talking as if the sky is falling, when in fact President Obama is simply trying to right 30 years worth of Reaganomics’ wrongs. E.J. Dionne Jr., the president’s personal cheerleader in print, says capitalism isn’t going anywhere; it’s just going to operate in a way that properly redistributes wealth from the wealthy to the working class. Daniel Gross of Slate asked, “What war on the rich?” And White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs took...

So you're an arms dealer, you want to win a contract in India, and you rather liked the look of those dancing scenes in Slumdog Millionaire. What do you do next? Well, if you're the Israeli firm Rafael, the obvious (but no less excruciating) answer is to make a Bollywood movie promoting your military hardware. Doesn't sound like it has any of the ingredients for one of those classically romantic Indian films does it? Trust me. You truly have no idea how bad, or hilarious, this could be until you see it. The first thing watchers will notice is that...

An e-mail from a state labor group linking campaign donations to contentious worker-rights legislation has prompted legislative leaders to kill the bill and request an investigation by law enforcement. The e-mail raises "serious legal and ethical questions," Gov. Chris Gregoire and the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate said in a joint statement Wednesday. They referred the issue to the Washington State Patrol for investigation. Lawmakers would not release the e-mail, but a copy was obtained by The Seattle Times. It was sent to several members of labor organizations as well as a small number of state lawmakers. The...

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — LaceDarius Dunn hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 points, leading a late surge as Baylor rallied after blowing a 17-point lead to stun No. 11 Kansas 71-64 in the Big 12 tournament quarterfinals on Thursday. The three-time defending champion Jayhawks (25-7) dispatched of the deficit quickly and led by five before Dunn fueled a decisive 12-0 run for the Bears (19-13). Kansas became only the second top-seeded team to lose its opening game at the Big 12 tournament. Baylor was also responsible for the other upset, beating Iowa State in 2001.

Supply and demand! Forty percent of Oregonians have ordered guns since the Presidential election in November. Jim Carey, owner of the Rogue Outdoor Store in Gold Beach, reports that he's sold more guns, rifles and handguns during a three-month interval since the elections than in the past nine hunting seasons combined. Gun sellers cannot keep up with the demand as the rush to their counters continues. Most of the requests coming in are for Remington, Colt, Bushmaster and DPMS brands of what are termed black guns; AR15 and Para-military style weapons, which are fed by high-capacity clips. Protection shotguns, ammo...

WASHINGTON — The Navy has assigned a heavily armed destroyer to escort the U.S. surveillance ship that got into a high-seas confrontation with Chinese ships last weekend. A defense official says the Pearl Harbor-based destroyer Chung-Hoon is keeping a close eye on the unarmed sub-hunting ship Impeccable as it continues operations in the South China Sea. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe sensitive ship movements. The official says the escort ship joined the Impeccable on Wednesday.

The Democrats’ frontal assault on talk radio has failed, as planned. They knew the Fairness Doctrine—their attempt to balance the radio airwaves with federally-subsidized progressive talk, i.e. “censorship”—would fail because there aren’t yet enough Americans willing to surrender more of the First Amendment. Emphasis on the “yet”—but they’re working on it. As we now know, the spontaneous coordinated personal attack on Rush Limbaugh was orchestrated by senior Democratic strategists Rahm Emanuel, James Carville and Paul Begala. Rush only accelerated their timetable with his politically precise statement, “I hope the president fails [to kill capitalism and institute socialism]”—a statement that every...

UFOs and aliens may not neatly match the Hollywood depiction of advanced races from far off planets reaching us through worm holes or inter-dimensional portals. Daily sightings of anomalous airborn crafts worldwide and accounts of alien abduction might find an explanation in something as handy as your Bible. The aliens may indeed be fallen angels. The very first Christian symposium on aliens will address this idea July 3-5, organized by Guy Malone, author and co-founder of Alien Resistence - an organization that studies Biblical ideas on the UFO and alien abduction phenomena.

The as-yet-untitled record is the long awaited follow up to 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps. Formed in Ohio in 1973, the band were famed for wearing yellow boiler suits and flowerpot style hats on stage which they called "power domes". On their official website the band said: "De-evolution has finally arrived and who better to guide us through the mess than Devo."

Terming the Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC) III anti-missile system as "outdated", top DRDO scientist V K Saraswat said the Indian Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) shield was better than the American system. "PAC III is an outdated system. Our Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile is 30 per cent superior in terms of range and capability. AAD intercepts at much higher ranges and altitudes compared to PAC III as it has only 15km range for BMD," he told a press conference on the successful test of BMD system on March 6. On the role of foreign countries in the Air Defence (AD)...

3.1 Information: A Fundamental Quantity The trail-blazing discoveries about the nature of energy in the 19th century caused the first technological revolution, when manual labor was replaced on a large scale by technological appliances—machines which could convert energy. In the same way, knowledge concerning the nature of information in our time initiated the second technological revolution where mental “labor” is saved through the use of technological appliances—namely, data processing machines. The concept “information” is not only of prime importance for informatics theories and communication techniques, but it is a fundamental quantity in such wide-ranging sciences as cybernetics, linguistics, biology,...

A Rosemount teen got to play high roller for a day after finding a plastic bag containing $18,000 in a highway ditch, and he gave away thousands of dollars to classmates on Tuesday before authorities got involved. Dakota County officials are releasing few details about the source of the money, but they have a pretty compelling clue: When the student, 16, led them back to the spot where he found the money, they discovered 4 pounds of marijuana and some scales. "This is tied in to drugs, obviously," said Sgt. Joe Leku of the Dakota County Drug Task Force. He...

My purpose for posting this thread is not for sympathy or attention, it is for information. My cousin and his wife just learned that their baby has Spina Bifida. They are five months along, and are obviously in shock.I am very aware of the story of Baby Samuel, who was operated on In Utero and is doing just fine 3-4 years later from what I understand. My question is, how would someone go about finding a Doctor to attempt this procedure? I've learned the Dr's name in Baby Samuel's case. Are there others who do this? Is it realistic to...
