  • President Obama Shuns Lech Walesa

According to the Wall Street Journal, Polish officials requested that Walesa accept the Medal of Freedom on behalf of Jan Karski, a member of the Polish Underground during World War II who was being honored posthumously this week. The request makes sense. Walesa and Karski shared a burning desire to rid Poland of tyrannical subjugation. But President Obama said no.

LONDON/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Some of the world's major economies are faltering or shrinking, with Chinese factory output barely growing and powerful European manufacturing countries falling deeper into malaise, surveys showed on Friday. In Britain, manufacturing activity shrank at its fastest pace in three years last month as the global economic slowdown hit demand for its goods. "It doesn't bode well for the second quarter," said Sian Fenner, global macroeconomist at Lloyds Banking Group. "There is a lot of heightened uncertainty and risk in the market in the euro area, and this is playing on manufacturers' minds. "It could start feeding...

The book will make you shudder. It is Edward Klein's The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House, a devastating picture of a president so far in over his head as to make your own head spin. And, if you have not already heard, Klein, former editor-in-chief of The New York Times Magazine, takes his title from remarks he attributes to former President Bill Clinton, remarks Clinton made at a private gathering at the Clinton home in Chappaqua, N.Y., in August. The Clintons were arguing in front of guests over Bill Clinton urging a very reluctant Hillary to challenge the...

The Mexican ambassador to the United States on Thursday said a botched gun-tracking operation by America “poisoned” public opinion of the United States for the citizens of its southern neighbor. Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan told a room of reporters on Capitol Hill that the failed Operation Fast and Furious, which has been the focus of a Republican investigation in the House for more than a year, “put a lot of strain” on U.S.-Mexico relations. “Fast and Furious has poisoned the well-spring of public opinion in Mexico as it relates to the cooperation and engagement with the United States,” Sarukhan said. “It...

Judging from the alarming number of summonses issued so far for failing to buckle up in the back seat, motorists don’t seem overly concerned about the current Click It or Ticket crackdown. After all, most unrestrained drivers and passengers can afford a measly $46 fine. But if you drive with an unrestrained pet, don’t expect a slap on the wrist. Penalties range from $250 to $1,000 and as much as six months in jail.

Gun rights advocates recently discovered that the gun control group Mayors Against Illegal Guns has burrowed its "gun violence prevention coordinators" (read "anti-gun lobbyists") into city payrolls from Augusta, Maine to Seattle, Washington, at taxpayer expense. MAIG is the brainchild of New York City's zealous anti-gun billionaire mayor, Michael Bloomberg, who formed the group at a 2006 gun control summit held in Gracie Mansion and co-hosted by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. MAIG touts an agenda of "commonsense reforms" that gun rights advocates see as being somewhere on the far side of repealing the Second Amendment. With a membership that started...

The 17-nation eurozone's unemployment rate reached the highest level since the creation of the common currency 13 years ago, climbing to 11% in April as employers slashed 110,000 jobs. The unemployment rate in the broader 27-nation area that makes up the European Union rose to 10.3% in April, as employers trimmed 102,000 jobs from their payrolls. That was highest EU unemployment rate on records that go back to 2000. There were 24.7 million unemployed in the EU in April, of whom 17.4 million were in the eurozone. Both figures are far above the 12.5 million unemployed in the United States,...

Washington State’s 29-year-old model state preemption statute is definitely under the gun in the wake of Wednesday’s multiple slayings and a string of recent shootings that have put the Seattle Police Department’s skills to the test. That department has been under considerable criticism in recent months, but on Wednesday, everyone from the top down earned every penny of their pay. That applies especially to Deputy Chief Nick Metz, who was criticized a few days ago in this column for something he said. He deserves high marks for what he did throughout the day Wednesday in the midst of a chaotic...

The American jobs engine hit stall speed in May, with the economy adding just 69,000 new jobs while the unemployment rate climbed to 8.2 percent. Photo: Sturti | Vetta | Getty Images -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As another summertime swoon looms, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that job creation missed economist estimates for 158,000 new positions, and said labor force participation remains near 30-year lows though incrementally better than last month. In May, stocks suffered through their worst month in two years, and the job-creation figures only added to the gloom. Stock market futures indicated a sharply lower open for Wall Street,...

MIDLAND — Michigan’s 60,000 home health care aides should no longer have so-called union dues skimmed from their subsidy checks as a result of an informal but binding opinion letter issued today by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette. The opinion was issued in response to a request by Rep. Paul Opsommer, R-DeWitt, six weeks after Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation ending the stealth unionization. The Service Employees International Union has taken some $30 million from the state’s most vulnerable residents over the last six years, including more than $680,000 since the scheme was outlawed. “This episode demonstrates how government-sector unions...

    - FrontPage Magazine - http://frontpagemag.com - Pat Leahy’s Anti-Israel ExtremismPosted By Ben Shapiro On June 1, 2012 @ 12:40 am In Daily Mailer,FrontPage | 5 Comments Last Thursday, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) targeted an amendment by Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) that would force the State Department to determine how many actual Palestinian refugees – not their children, relatives, friends, or distant relations – are being served by US tax dollars. Leahy was upset because he knew, as most supporters of the Palestinian cause do, that the number of Palestinians who fled or were expelled from Israel during the 1948 war...

Venezuela has brought a new gun law into effect which bans the commercial sale of firearms and ammunition. Until now, anyone with a gun permit could buy arms from a private company. Under the new law, only the army, police and certain groups like security companies will be able to buy arms from the state-owned weapons manufacturer and importer. The ban is the latest attempt by the government to improve security and cut crime ahead of elections in October Venezuela saw more than 18,000 murders last year and the capital, Caracas, is thought to be one of the most dangerous...
  • Kosovo Serbs and NATO troops clash in tense north

(Reuters) - At least three Kosovo Serbs and a NATO soldier were wounded in a gunfight on Friday, as peacekeepers tried to dismantle Serb barricades blocking traffic, a Reuters witness said. NATO troops in the Kosovo Force (KFOR) fired tear gas and small arms and some protesters fired back with handguns. The troops, in armored personnel carriers, were confronted by hundreds of Serbs who pelted them with stones near roadblocks in the villages of Rudare and Dudin Krs outside the town of Zvecan in a Serb-dominated northern area of Kosovo. The roadblocks are among the last on major roads yet...
