Ten takeaways from a survive-and-advance Saturday in college football: 1. All playoff contenders coming into the weekend remain College Football Playoff contenders coming out of the weekend. The top 10 teams in the selection committee rankings, plus undefeated No. 12 Central Florida, all won. The closest escape was No. 6 Oklahoma by a point over unranked Oklahoma State, in a defense-optional Bedlam game in Norman. The Sooners gave up 47 points and 640 yards to the 5-5 Cowboys, but produced 48 points and 702 yards of their own. They held for the win when Mike Gundy’s Holgorsen Moment failed —...

CONCORD — Republicans are doing some serious soul searching in the wake of a disastrous midterm election last Tuesday in which first-term Gov. Chris Sununu was the lone prominent survivor. Sununu is New Hampshire’s first Republican governor since the Civil War to be reelected but have the Democrats holding all other levels of influence in state government. Every single Democratic governor over those 150 years has presided over a divided government at some point in their term. In the days following the election, the finger-pointing and blame game was already in overdrive. Former Senate Majority Leader and lobbyist Bob Clegg...

Wood, a father and volunteer in his community, noticed something was amiss several months ago when he could barely stand up straight. The Lodi man went to his primary care doctor, who referred him to a neurosurgeon at UC San Francisco. This week’s edition of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update served as a sequel of sorts to last week’s episode. Pete Davidson followed up on his insult of newly-elected Congressman Dan Crenshaw by bringing the politician on to the show to get his revenge and share a serious message about respecting veterans. Crenshaw, a Republican politician and military veteran who lost his eye in Afghanistan in 2012, had been targeted by Davidson as part of SNL’s midterms preview. Davidson mocked the politician’s injury, saying he looked like a “hitman in a porno.” Davidson had quickly added, “I’m sorry, I know he...

Archaeologists in Egypt said today that they had discovered dozens of cat mummies, a rare collection of mummified scarab beetles, as well as an apparently pristine Fifth Dynasty tomb they plan to open in the coming weeks. The mummified beetles - the first ever to be found in the area - were among artefacts found in seven tombs discovered over the past six months on the edge of the King Userkaf pyramid complex at the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, south of Cairo. The burial chambers also contained wooden statues depicting other animals and birds.

The owner of a pizzeria in New Paltz, New York, said protesters vandalized the American flag mural painted on the side of her building because they believed it represented "a political position." Maria Lisante, who owns La Bella Pizza Bistro, said on “The Ingraham Angle” on Friday that the protesters were "opposed" to the flag and thus defaced the mural. "They didn't want a flag. They thought that it meant a political position and they were opposed," Lisante said.

Some 170,000 Los Angeles County residents remain under mandatory evacuation Saturday night, as the destructive Woolsey Fire torches coastline and hillsides, reducing houses to rubble, from the beaches to the Valley. None of the mandatory evacuation orders issued for the Woolsey Fire since Friday have been lifted in LA County. The orders affect multiple communities, including the entire city of Malibu, which has been “hit very, very hard,” says City Councilmember Lou La Monte. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents in evacuation zones to resist the urge to return home. Even in areas where flames are no...

The North and South Korean militaries completed withdrawing troops and firearms from 22 front-line guard posts on Saturday as they continue to implement a wide-ranging agreement reached in September to reduce tensions across the world's most fortified border, a South Korean Defence Ministry official said. South Korea says the military agreement is an important trust-building step that would help stabilize peace and advance reconciliation between the rivals. But critics say the South risks conceding some of its conventional military strength before North Korea takes any meaningful steps on denuclearization -- an anxiety that's growing as the larger nuclear negotiations between...

Two organizations financed by billionaire liberal activist George Soros have threatened to take Florida Gov. Rick Scott to court if he doesn’t recuse himself from the state’s recount, which includes his own Senatorial election. “Please issue a public statement that you will recuse yourself and remove yourself from any oversight of the 2018 election immediately or we will have no choice but to seek a formal emergency remedy from the courts,” reads a letter sent to Scott by the two groups, the League of Women Voters and Common Cause. The letter claims Scott “intentionally politicized governance of the elections” when...

A majority of Germans say the level of mass migration has left them feeling “like a stranger in their own country”, according to a new study. Presented as part of this year’s Leipzig University research into “authoritarian” attitudes in the country, the figure showed a rise of 12 points since the Competence Center for Right-Wing Extremism and Democracy Research tested Germans on the same questions in 2014, with 56 per cent of Germans expressing the sentiment in 2018. Other findings from the 328-page study, for which 2,416 Germans were interviewed between May and July this year, were that 44 per...
