There were stacks of toilet paper in the store room at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Hunterdon County. But when inmate Marianne Brown asked a guard for a roll, he fired back a question of his own. “I was told, ‘What are you going to do for me?’” recalled Brown, who was serving a 21-year sentence for kidnapping. Brown was confused, but quickly realized what the corrections officer was suggesting. “Then, it hit me. You know what it meant. Are you going to give them oral sex?‘' Brown said.

July 5, 2020 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Zec 9:9-10 Thus says the LORD: Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. Responsorial Psalm...

Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the third ranking Republican in the House, is publicly taking on President Donald Trump — and unlike with most of his other critics, the President seems wary to hit back. Cheney, who is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has broken with Trump on policy before, but she has become increasingly outspoken in recent months. This week, she demanded to know why Trump was unaware of intelligence pointing to Russian bounties on American and coalition troops in Afghanistan. And last week, she indirectly took a swipe at Trump by tweeting a picture of...

THE SEATTLE COMMUNE is no more. Declared three weeks ago by radical leftists as CHAZ, the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, rechristened CHOP, the Capitol Hill Occupation Protest, the six-block enclave inside Seattle ceased to exist July 1. The cops shut it down. As Marx said, history repeats itself, first as tragedy then as farce. If the Paris Commune of 1871 is the archetype, that mass uprising and swift slaughter of the communards who rose against the regime, what happened in Seattle is the farce. Police Chief Carmen Best, who opposed Mayor Jenny Durkan’s surrender of one of her precinct stations...

The Electron rocket lifted off from the company’s Launch Complex 1 at Mahia Peninsula, New Zealand, at 5:19 p.m. Eastern. The launch was originally scheduled for July 3 but pushed back two days because of poor weather in the forecast, only for the company to move up the launch to July 4 based on a reassessment of the weather. The initial phases of the launch appeared to go as planned, although the vehicle’s passage through “max-q,” or maximum dynamic pressure, appeared to be rougher than what was seen in previous launches. Onboard video taken shortly before first-stage separation showed material...

Erin Olszewski’s abbreviated tenure at Elmhurst Hospital Center was during the months that New York was the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, suffering the highest number of COVID deaths in the nation. Her claim that the standard of medical care at Elmhurst was commensurate with “a third world country hospital” is based on shocking undercover videos she made of conversations with colleagues, supervisors, and...

How a false hydroxychloroquine narrative was created, and moreIt is remarkable that a series of events taking place over the past 3 months produced a unified message about hydroxychloroquine, and produced similar policies about the drug in the US, Canada, Australia, NZ and western Europe. The message is that generic, inexpensive hydroxychloroquine is dangerous and should not be used to treat a potentially fatal disease, Covid-19, for which there are no (other) reliable treatments.Hydroxychloroquine had been used safely for 65 years in millions of patients. And so the message was crafted that the drug is safe for its other uses,...

They came together on Independence Day with a message: “Until Black lives are free, none of us are free.” And another, just as important: “Say her name.” Hundreds of people gathered on the Fourth of July to recognize the Black and brown women who have been victims of police violence in Boston and beyond, and to continue the calls for justice and equality that have grown across the nation since the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Beijing’s June 30 decision to impose its national security law on Hong Kong renders the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 null and void. Promising one China, two systems, that treaty guaranteed Hong Kong’s political autonomy through 2047. So another Chinese Communist Party guarantee has entered the dustbin of history. Now tyrannical whim backed by military threat will rule the city. After a decent interval of propaganda glorifying “one China, one system,” the Pearl of the Orient’s free media and honest courts will die along with its democracy. CCP guarantees go poof when its senior leaders decide breaking a treaty, ignoring...
