Trees and wildflowers blossom during all four seasons in Kunming, which is known as The City of Eternal Spring because of its year-round mild temperatures. However, it is also home to something much less natural: a laboratory where scientists have been creating monkey embryos with a mutated gene so that, when born, they will age unusually fast. Such experiments are done to study human diseases such as autism, cancer, Alzheimer's and muscular dystrophy.

A new study suggests daily dumbbell workouts just three seconds in length can lead to impressive strength gains Depositphotos VIEW 1 IMAGES Finding time to go the gym or even complete workouts at home can be a tricky task for busy folk, but a new study suggests even lifting a dumbbell once or twice a day can be worth your while, particularly when it comes to combating the effects of aging. The research examined the effects of different forms of bicep curls and found one in particular can lead to significant strength improvements, even when undertaken for just three seconds...

A study in mice has found that stress and tissue damage initiated by angiotensin II, a molecule that is known to increase blood pressure and stiffening in the linings of blood vessels, leads to cellular senescence, a process by which a cell ages and permanently stops dividing but does not die. Importantly, when the researchers eliminated senescent cells from the mice, tissues returned to a normal state in spite of a continued infusion of angiotensin II. We've known that angiotensin II can lead to hypertension and cellular damage, but our findings show that chronic, stress-induced damage due to slightly elevated...

A group of researchers have revealed that adding Vitamin B2 to cells that have been exposed to aging stress increases the mitochondria's ability to produce energy and prevents cell aging. It has previously been shown that the accumulation of old (i.e. senescent) cells in the body causes age-related disorders and whole-body aging. Therefore, there is the potential to prevent and ameliorate age-related disorders and extend people's healthy lifespans using supplements and medicines containing Vitamin B2 to suppress cell senescence. This research group discovered an anti-aging phenomenon whereby the cell's ability to absorb Vitamin B2 is increased in response to stress....

News AnalysisIn order to save itself from the aging crisis, China needs to increase the number of young workers or increase the education and productivity of its current workers. Either policy would be very costly and could take decades to pay off.In 2016, faced with an aging population and a dwindling workforce, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) repealed the one-child policy. The expected birth explosion, however, never materialized. The cost of raising and educating a child in China was just too high to encourage young couples to have more than one child. In Shanghai, a pre-owned, two-bedroom apartment can cost more...

Sarah Jessica Parker is over the criticism she and her “Sex and the City” co-stars have received for how their physical appearances have changed as they’ve gotten older. “There’s so much misogynist chatter in response to us that would never. Happen. About. A. Man.,” Parker, 56, told Vogue in an accompanying interview for her December cover shoot. “’Gray hair, gray hair, gray hair. Does she have gray hair?’” Parker is referring to the pics of her rocking her natural gray locks that went viral after she was spotted having lunch with friends in July. “I’m sitting with Andy Cohen, and...

Four weeks on a diet of highly processed food led to a strong inflammatory response in the brains of aging rats that was accompanied by behavioral signs of memory loss, a new study has found. Researchers also found that supplementing the processed diet with the omega-3 fatty acid DHA prevented memory problems and reduced the inflammatory effects almost entirely in older rats. Neuroinflammation and cognitive problems were not detected in young adult rats that ate the processed diet. The study diet mimicked ready-to-eat human foods that are often packaged for long shelf lives, such as potato chips and other snacks,...

Whether consuming cocoa, known to be packed with powerful antioxidants that protect our cells from damage, helps us age better, is a question scientists want to definitively answer. They are looking for answers in the blood of 600 individuals age 60 and older who participated in the largest trial ever to assess the impact of a cocoa supplement as well as a common multivitamin, on reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other health outcomes, says Dr. Yanbin Dong, geneticist and cardiologist at the Georgia Prevention Institute at the Medical College of Georgia. The COSMOS Trial (COcoa Supplement...

The longest-lived person in history so far is Jeanne Calment, a chain-smoking French woman born in 1875 who died aged 122 years and 164 days in 1997. However it may be possible to outlive her record, a study has found. Researchers analysed the lifespans of more than 3,800 Italian 'semi-supercentenarians', who made it beyond the age of 105, and more than 9,800 people who achieved the same longevity in France. They conclude that beyond the age of 110, when people with poor genes and terrible health have typically died off already, the chances of staying alive are roughly 50/50.

SEX AT 85 I just took a leaflet out of my mailbox, informing me that I can have sex at 85. I'm so happy, because I live at number 83. So it's not too far to walk home afterwards. And it's the same side of the street. I don't even have to cross the road! ~~~~~ Answering machine message, "I am not available right now, but thank you for caring enough to call. I am making some changes in my life. Please leave a message after the beep. If I do not return your call, you are one of the...

Too big a price to pay for decelerating your epigenetic clock? If you're a gentleman looking to counteract the effects of ageing, a new study on sheep may have the answer – but you're going to have to say goodbye to your family jewels in return for a slowdown of your DNA's ageing process."Both farmers and scientists have known for some time that castrated male sheep live on average much longer than their intact counterparts," explained first author Victoria Sugrue, an anatomy PhD student at the University of Otago. "However, this is the first time anyone has looked at DNA to...

As a man, I used to think I was pretty much just a regular person, but I was born white, into a two-parent household which now, whether I like it or not, makes me “privileged”, and a white supremacist & responsible for slavery. I am a fiscal and moral conservative, which by today’s standards, makes me a fascist because I plan, budget and support myself. I went to high school, got in some college, and have always held a job. But I now find out that I am not here because I earned it, but because I was “advantaged”. I...

In addition to the snacks, study participants consumed their regular diets and did not eat any nuts or nut-containing productsDaily consumption of almonds may help reduce the severity of facial wrinkles and skin pigmentation in post-menopausal women with a skin condition, a study claims. The research, published in the journal Nutrients, confirms and expands on a 2019 study which found that a daily snack of almonds in place of other nut-free snacks improved measures of wrinkle width and severity in postmenopausal women. The new study involved 49 healthy postmenopausal women with Fitzpatrick skin type 1 or 2, which is characterised...

The Spanish firm Grifols helped set off a kerfuffle last year when it, along with other firms, offered nearly double the going price for blood donations for a COVID-19 treatment trial. Brigham Young University in Idaho had to threaten some enterprising students with suspension to keep them from intentionally trying to contract COVID-19. The trial failed, however, and now the Barcelona-based firm is hoping to extract something far more valuable from the plasma of young volunteers: a set of microscopic molecules that could reverse the process of aging itself. Earlier this year, Grifols closed on a $146 million-deal to buy...

‘This means we can start to look at aging as a reversible disease,’ says Prof Shai Efrati; top geriatrician says he is skeptical, and raises concernsAn Israeli doctor says he has brought about physical changes in human blood cells that “reverse” aging, using an oxygen therapy. Shai Efrati reported in a peer-reviewed journal article published on November 18 that his research team’s 60-day therapy lengthened telomeres, the structures found at the ends of chromosomes, on average by more than a fifth. He claims this represents a “holy grail” in the battle against aging. However, some other physicians have reservations,...

As we age, our abilities inevitably decline. The activities of daily livings (ADLs) capture those skills we need to remain living an independent life – primarily getting dressed, bathing and toileting, and eating meals. Bathing and hygiene are particularly crucial – simply put, if you cannot bathe and use the toilet where you are, you need to be somewhere else. Simple home modifications, a grab bar in the shower or tub, an elevated toilet seat, a shower seat all are inexpensive additions that “reduce injury, enable independence, preserve dignity, and improve quality of life in older people with irreversible disability...

“There are huge strides being made in aging biology” that point to ways that we can potentially slow the aging process, says Steele, 35, whose research focuses on the ways that the body ages at a cellular level. “We have loads and loads of different ways in the lab to slow down and reverse this process.”

Fewer Chinese means less domestic consumption at a time Beijing has prioritized more consumption-led growth as part of its recently announced “dual circulation” policy. Moreover, the ratio of young-to-old will be dramatically imbalanced by the soon surging ranks of the elderly, putting unprecedented strain on the ties that hold society together. The latest data from Shanghai’s Statistics Bureau reviewed by Asia Times indicates that there are now half a million more senior residents aged 65 or older than young aged below 35 in China’s most populous and reputedly most vibrant city. Only 92,000 babies were born in 2019 in Shanghai,...

Melatonin, a dietary supplement often used by insomnia sufferers, could be used to possibly help prevent or treat COVID-19, according to researchers at the Cleveland Clinic. The hormone — which regulates the sleep-wake cycle — was associated with an almost 30 percent reduced likelihood of contracting the disease, the scientists said in research published in the journal PLOS Biology, KIRO 7 reported. Additional studies are required about the over-the-counter supplement, the researchers said. “It is very important to note these findings do not suggest people should start to take melatonin without consulting their physician,” lead researcher Feixiong Cheng of the...
