  • The Modern Defensive Rifle

    06/01/2013 11:56:49 AM PDT · by Redcloak · 62 replies
After some careful consideration, I've decided that I don't like the term "Modern sporting rifle" to describe firearms like the AR-15 or semi-auto versions of the Kalashnikov. Yes, they're modern. Yes, they're rifles. And yes, they can be used for shooting sports. But the 2nd Amendment isn't about sporting goods. Calling these guns "Modern sporting rifles" is like saying that the Founders bled and died to preserve our right to engage in sports; to play games. It would be like saying that they fought to ensure that they and their descendents would forever have the liberty to engage in Pilates...
  • Gun lovers gather for build-your-own-rifle parties

Rifle-building parties mix burgers and beer with a chance to sidestep gun laws by building your own weapon. What’s a party without some brewskies, a few burgers on the grill and a group of buddies just kicking back and assembling some of the world’s deadliest assault weapons from make-shift parts? That’s the premise of so-called rifle "build parties" that are spawning across the U.S. and in California in particular, where the gun laws are considered to be among the country’s most restrictive. Although gun ownership makes a person subject to having their firearms registered with the government, build parties provide...

3D Printer-extraordinaire WarFairy has expanded his P90-styled Charon printable AR-15 lower from a single design into an entire line of printable rifle and pistol lowers. The original Charon receiver design has been upgraded to version 0.2. The updated model features a thicker magazine well with a finger hook (I am sure someone more knowledgable than I can explain in the comments below what finger hooks are for … ).The most exciting new addition to the Charon line is the Carbine, Adjustable Stock. The stock on this model slides out from under the buffer tube to adjust the length of pull. The length of pull is adjustable...

You're going wait, wait, wait. Even if you WANT to build a gun out of plastic blocks, a gun made out of plastic is just a toy. Even that 3-D printed single shot is just a single shot toy. Ah. Let's talk about the AR-15, designed by Eugene Stoner in 1958. In the conventional fashion, he attached the barrel to a metal receiver that the bolt slides back...

You may have noticed my complete lack of posting about Cody Wilson and his printed gun technology. The reason for that is simple: it’s a gimmick. Sure, printed guns can work, but the question is inevitably “how long?” When it comes to the catastrophic failure of the thermoplastics used in the construction of the barrels and firing chambers, it isn’t a matter of “if,” but “when.” As a practical matter, with current and near-term technologies, plastic guns are a loser. That said, some of the emerging technologies that make plastic guns feasible are viable for metalwork as well, and machines like...

  • Stag Arms Owner Unveils Modified Rifles That Might Be Legal In Connecticut

Five weeks after Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed a gun control law outlawing any retail sales for the entire product line of Stag Arms, the maker of military-style rifles unveiled a new design Thursday that its owner said will not be subject to the Connecticut ban. From the outside, the new firearm looks identical to other Stag rifles, complete with matte black finish, pistol grip and adjustable stock. Stag owner Mark Malkowski showed a prototype of the new rifle in the shipping room of his New Britain plant, explaining why he feels certain that it's legal. It's not a radical...
  • Stag Arms To Design Connecticut-Legal AR-15 Rifle

    05/09/2013 12:53:39 PM PDT · by matt04 · 54 replies
Connecticut’s historic gun law signed by Governor Dannel Malloy went into effect last month, signed April 4, but the state is giving gun manufacturers and gun shops until June 1 to understand and apply the laws to their businesses. Gun shop owners like Mark Malkowski, owner of Stag Arms, have said they should have been given more time to interpret it before it went to law. Stag Arms, producer of the AR-15 in Connecticut, said it was considering moving out of Connecticut when the new law passed because the gun cannot be sold here, only out of state. The owner...

If you think 3D printers have given would-be gun controllers the vapors already, just wait until you hear the latest from Cody Wilson, the head honcho of Defense Distributed. He told reporters at the Inside 3D Printing Conference in New York City that the group's latest project — a gun made entirely with 3D-printed parts (except for a metal firing pin) — is just weeks away from success. If Wilson and company can deliver on the promise, it would be an important step beyond their already impressive accomplishments in producing functioning AR-15 lower receivers and "high-capacity" magazines for AR-15s and...

Photo by Oleg Volk Sally is a nice, conservative lady who asked a question about the AR-15 a few weeks ago. Sally is not a "gun person", she just wanted a straight answer. I am pleased to report that Sally sent the following message yesterday: "Just got my conceal carry license. I knew it wouldn't take long after I sent it in. To be a Pharmacy Tech in Missouri one gets finger printed by the highway patrol and prints go to the FBI. Easy to find. And would be the stupidest crime of the year if I ever committed one....

LITTLE ROCK, AR- The gun debate is not over. Lawmakers say the gun battle will soon be back on the Senate floor. That has some people worried, especially gun enthusiasts who say we should enforce the gun laws that are already on the books. The issue has divided the nation. At first, many called for a ban on certain guns and ammunition, now there are calls for tougher background checks. Donna Terrell talks with one mother, Regina Pryor, who knows about guns, specifically , one of the most controversial, the AR-15. "They call them assault rifles, but they are not...

CNBC (and while yes, it is part of NBC/MSNBC) of late they have been airing many informative, and balanced investigative shows in the evening hours ( after the markets close). Given that a great many FReepers have a passionate interest in firearms, I thought I'd post this FYI. Links below to the program's website, and a review:

Jasper Brisbon, 32, wandered up to a couple late Friday at the Lynnewood Apartments as the pair spoke outside their unit. Brisbon, they told police, appeared to be on drugs. He stared at the pair for several minutes before the couple decided to go into their apartment, police said. But as they entered their home Brisbon jumped between them, forcing his way in. The male of the couple ran to get a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle and insisted Brisbon leave. Brisbon...

Liberal anti-gun readers of the Seattle Times and Seattle P-I.com are having fits over the announcement that the State Republican Party will auction an AR-15 during this weekend’s annual fund raising banquet. The event kicks off with a silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bellevue Hilton, followed by the live auction and dinner beginning at 7 o’clock, according to State GOP Chairman Kirby Wilbur. He was filling in all week on KVI for vacationing John Carlson. This was like an old home week for Wilbur, who used to occupy the morning drive slot on KVI before a...

The first lawsuit challenging the state’s new gun control law was served Thursday by a group that represents disabled citizens, charging that the ban on military-style rifles eliminates the main firearm that many disabled people use in exercising their gun rights. “The AR-15, due to its ease of handling, low recoil, adjustable features and customizability, is particularly suited to disabled persons in order to engage in lawful use of firearms,” said the lawsuit by Disabled Americans for Firearms Rights. The lawsuit names Gov. Dannel P. Malloy as the defendant, and was served at the office of Attorney General George Jepsen....

I recently bought a DPMS AR15 from a dealer. I have not been able to fire more than one round out of this rifle before it jams. Yesterday, a round got stuck in the barrel. I've tried using different mags, limited to 15 in NJ and using Federal .223 ammo. I've taken the gun apart and lubricated it with M-Pro 7. Any ideas what could be wrong with this gun before I send it back to DPMS?
