Gunman Dead After Shots Fired at Police HQ, Mexican Consulate in Austin By Alastair Jamieson, Alexander Smith and Jason Cumming A veteran Austin police officer putting away horses for the night was able to stop a gunman rampaging through the city's downtown early Friday — ending the suspect's 10 minutes of terror before anyone was hurt, authorities said. But police are trying to determine whether the shooter, who had been driving around the Texas capital, was killed during a gunfight with the officer or if he took his own life.

Later Tuesday in Austin, people are planning to protest the grand jury's decision not to indict the Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson for shooting and killing Michael Brown. Occupy Austin put out a message on Twitter promoting a rally in front of the Austin Police Department at 6 p.m. Tuesday, less than 24 hours after a peaceful protest that stretched late into the night Monday. "I can't tell you how many times here cops have been brought in front of the grand jury and exonerated," said Harrington. "And that's not the function of the grand jury to exonerate them. The...

Bundick says the rainbow is what the area’s all about. “It’s the most recognizable way that people can identify and say, ‘This is a safe community. This is an accepting community,'” he said. The Austin City Council gave the project initial approval. Now the details are getting worked out with the city’s Art Commission. Funding for the project will come partially from city money for public artwork. The Austin PRIDE Foundation is also donating money.

A study from the Texas Association of Realtors shows international buyers pumped more than $11 billion dollars into the Texas economy between March of 2013 and 2014. One Austin Realtor says people from outside of the U.S. are looking for a secure investment. “An international client can come into the Austin market, get a great value for what they’re buying and almost be insured that there’s profitability in that and that’s unique to the world as a whole,” said J Kuper, owner of Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty.

The woman is not currently showing any signs of the disease, but her work is Sierra Leone places her at “some” risk according to CDC protocols, the governor’s office said in a release. The woman was met by state health officials after flying into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport early Wednesday. Her name is being withheld for privacy reasons, the state said. At the governor’s request, the nurse will be quarantined at her home and will be monitored twice daily by the Texas Department...

The hospital followed all Centers for Disease Control guidelines when admitting the patent to protect the patent and staff members. The patient is still in Seton's care to rule out other viral diseases. Hospital operations have returned to normal....

HOUSTON (AP) — The highest criminal court in Texas refused Wednesday to reinstate two money-laundering convictions against former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, ending a nearly decade-long criminal case against the one-time GOP heavyweight. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld a ruling last year from the 3rd Court of Appeals that tossed the Republican's 2010 convictions for money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Travis County prosecutors had argued in June before the Austin-based Court of Criminal Appeals that the convictions be reinstated in what they called a scheme to influence Texas state elections. "We agree with...

The indictment of Texas Gov. Rick Perry on two felony counts of abusing his power "potentially was the stupidest thing I´ve seen, I think, in my entire career," MSNBC political analyst Mark Halperin told MSNBC´s "Morning Joe" on Monday. "I hope some judge throws it out right away. "It´s not just kind of funny and ridiculous. But it´s an infringement on individual liberty. He´s got a first amendment right -- just because he´s the governor of Texas. And I think, like I said, it´s easy to joke about this, but this is a serious thing. It is ridiculous that he...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Mr. Snerdley walked in and said, "Boy, this thing with Rick Perry, can you believe what a farce?" It's not a farce, folks. Now, I'm not gonna be getting to Rick Perry right off the bat here, but I wanted to mention something about it to get it on the table. It's not a farce. It isn't a joke. Sadly, it's not even a laughing matter. This is dead serious. Not that he's done anything wrong. What's dead serious about this is the Democrat Party and their ongoing effort to criminalize political differences or opposition. All the...

No, I'm NOT being metaphorical nor am I kidding. If I wasn't having so much fun laughing at Ronnie Earle, I might even wish that it weren't true. Evidently Travis County DA Ronnie Earle - who is once again back in the running for most politically-driven DA in the nation now that Mike Nifong has been disbarred - is involved in this New Age, "re-discover your masculinity" cult called the ManKind Project. That's according to the liberal Houston Press. And boy does this outfit sound scary. Forty men at a time strip down and do tribal dances and beat cooked...

On Tuesday, migrant children from Central America were expected to be bussed into Oracle, and taken to a local shelter. According to this report, Kwasman tweeted from the scene: “Bus coming in. This is not compassion. This is the abrogation of the rule of law." He posted the tweet along with an image of a yellow school bus. Barack Obama may have lost a few approval rating points with this move. The president was seen cutting the line at Austin's Franklin Barbecue Thursday afternoon, while in town to raise money for the Democratic Party. Lives at the eatery are infamously long, and have been known to stretch as long as three hours wait. But Mr Obama did no waiting today, as he showed up at the restaurant, shook a few hands and made his way straight to the register to order more than $300 worth of meat. 'I know this is a long line. I feel real bad, but...
